EVO 2K13 Player's Choice: Donate money to breast cancer and get your favorite game in

So... this fight between melee and skullgirls doesnt make sense to me... the smash community has already shown through the years that is alot bigger than a community like the skullgirls one (its stupid to compare the events that the smash community organizes during a year with the skullgirls ones). But, both games have raised almost the same money... why? Its obvious that the skullgirl community is getting all the support from the developers, famous voice actors and all the people related with the game. This people is "working" for the game, leading the campaign and making everyone know that this fight is happening. On the other hand, we have the smash community witch is working together but without the developers (nintendo) leading the campaign... I mean, if both games were in the same situation (without any support), the smash community would win eassily. If both games had the support of the developers, smash would destroy skullgirls. Regardless of the game you want to win, we have two games competing in different conditions and ... what if skullgirls win? How should melee fans feel after seeing that his efforts have been futile simply because this situation? why are the organizers allowing this to happen?

I've got a couple thoughts about this:

  • Stop crying, start donating.
  • It's not the fault of the Skullgirls community that it has a better developer who actually cares about the FGC scene.
  • Life is unfair, welcome to the real world.
  • Deal with it.
  • Even if Melee doesn't make it, you still have your great community and your own tournaments.

Pick one. Or two, or more. They're all true.

Can you even consider lab zero "employees" anymore? They are basically doing this now for sake of doing it; they don't work for autumn games anymore iirc

My friend would be so salty if smash beat skullgirls

but smash 2v2s are pretty badass, and would really make it stand out over the other games. But idk if that would ever happen

Let's get a few things straight, the voice actresses volunteered their time (and voices) to the cause of getting the game into EVO. It was something they themselves brought up and decided to do amongst themselves. They're not being paid for putting their valuable time into this cause and they've done it entirely because of their love for the game. They same can be said for the developers of the title who were all layed off shortly after completing the game and have continued to work on the game for little to no pay and out of their mutual love for the title.

On the topic of FAIRNESS what you should be asking yourself isn't "Why are these people, allowed to rally support for the game?" but instead "Why the hell does my Melee community even need to COMPETE for a spot in Evo after our game consistently brings in massive numbers and destroys any other FGC game half as old as it in terms of popularity?" Take your issues up with EVO staff and Mr.Wizard himself, keep the grassroots fighting games out of the picture.

The rest of your points are pretty good, but this is rubbish, to be honest. The benefits that the Smash community see in EVO are pretty obvious.

I repeat this, stolen from SRK:

What Melee has:
  • An active tournament scene
  • A confirmed sequel (on two platforms!)
What Melee wants:
  • Developers that care about competition
  • Respect of the FGC

What Skullgirls has:
  • Developers that care about competition
  • Respect of the FGC
What Skullgirls wants:
  • An active tournament scene
  • Future Developments/DLC

What EVO will probably give the winner long-term:

I find it kind of amusing this fight is so fierce (great for the charity mind!) as I think EVO will in reality actually make very little of a difference to either series.

Evo can definitely make a difference for Skullgirls.
It's a small game, from a small developer.

If Evo exposure can manage to sell 5k-10k (about 10%) of the viewers the game, that's actually pretty significant.
And I'm sure some people were sold by all the VAs promoting it as well.

Being on the EVO mainstage would likely be a nice bullet point for Skullgirls if they're in a position to snag future investment capital/support from people like Konami. That's the biggest reason I can think of. Not sure if that even still applies anymore, though.

If anything I'd say it's more unfair letting a game that's a mainstream hit by Nintendo compete versus a much smaller game like SG.

Nintendo is free to rally support for their game, they just don't feel like doing so.

This, it's a bunch of free advertising at least. Melee obviously isn't in a position that it needs EVO at all.

You missed the point of the comment, sorry for not making it clearer. I'm not trying to argue that Melee shouldn't want to be in Evo, I'm trying to argue that given Melee's record of being an immensely popular game with a scene that's consistently supported it for the last few years its spot at Evo should be a given. They shouldn't need to compete for an 8th slot spot because a slot should have been given to Melee from the beginning. This point is further compounded when the Evo facebook poll taken a few months ago is put into consideration and how SFxT 2013 edition was considered because, paraphrasing Mr. Wizard here, "It deserved a second shot."

So I hadn't paid attention to this for a while and I'm a little stunned at the amount SG and Melee have garnered.
Now...I can see where the money for Smash is coming from but...where's all this Skullgirls cash coming from? Didn't think it was around long enough to build as deep of a base.

My man

I'm a diehard Skullgirls supporter, but Melee feels like the kind of game that should have been a staple of EVO. There are two things I hate most about this contest. We gotta fight the Melee people and they have to compete like this for a spot. I'll admit that we had to fight for a spot, but the Melee scene has shown again and again that they are the most hardcore of the core when it comes to fighting and grassroots campaigns. I couldn't name a more EVO worthy game/scene tbh. Too bad all the setting up for Smash causes such a headache for the EVO staff.

Too bad they won't get that respect they are looking for. People who hate SF/Mahvel continue to hate it. ASW's rep ain't changing in people's eyes even though they(correction: Atlus did the legwork on persona) got BB and Persona into EVO now. MK9 is still maligned to this day. Lots of folks still look at SCV and see a button masher. Smash has the most toxic perception of all and all EVO will do is give them a stage to change nothing. Change and acceptance come with time. The biggest mystery of all is how to get the time taht Netherrealm and Capcom do.

Edit: I can't help but feel that the answer lies in the heart of the publishers.

Skullgirls as a project has been followed by hundreds if not thousands before the game even became a common thing in fighting game circles. Mostly the art circles and such. Places like Tumbler, facebook, deviantart, etc. Combine that crowd with a mid sized, but dedicated fanbase for the actual gameplay and you've got something that can be tapped into. The subforum on SRK is the largest of all the non Capcom games for example. The only reason it's not bigger than SFxT(134k vs 84k) is the fact that SG didn't get into EVO last year. The activity from the buildup and actual tournament would have made it decently sized.

People who worked on the game promoting this to high heaven + Smash haters.

Fuck you… I’m going to rant just for you. And before I rant I would like to state that these opinions do not reflect of the FGC, but one WesternHeretic, and him alone. So if you disagree put it on me and not the FGC.

Mother fuck you sitting here try to paint a David vs. Goliath picture with Smash being this small poor underdog, going up against the entire FGC, developers, and voice actors.. First and foremost EVO doesn’t owe you guys shit. I may me not be an OG, of the OGs, but I’ve been around for a minute. I haven’t forgotten when Smash had the MLG stage, and the FGC was something yall just laugh at. Pull out your dicks and wave it around like you guys were the fucking king. Smash had it chance and quite frankly you’re lucky you even fighting for an 8th spot.

I don’t know what happened with Smash and MLG, but apparently shit got fucked up. SF4 got release, and EVO blew up. And look at you guys now... in the same exact position that the FGC was in for years. And in all honesty I think the FGC has been pretty damn open arms to the smash community. There might have been be a dickhead here and there that says “smash isn’t a real fighting game.” But for every one of those idiots there 5 other FGC guys that really want to see smash succeed. > Myself included.

So here we are… having two games fight for the 8th seed who just happen to raise $56,000 + breast cancer, and you want to bitch and cry about it not being fair? Look I don’t know Wizard, and the Cannons personally but one thing I tell you it’s that they are pretty legit about giving a fuck. Maybe they give too many fucks because I have no idea why they are planning to run 8 games, when we all thought 6 was too many. No one ask them to make a college scholarship last year either. So it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility (and probably) they just let both Melee, and Smash in. But of course instead of promoting that idea, here you are bitching about SG.

A mother fucker like you is what makes me used to hate the smash community. If it wasn’t for all the good people that I actually met through the smash community then I’ll probably still have that state of mind. Then I come to GAF and meet a few more good dudes, like Anth0ny, Beef, Panda, and whoever else I forgot I apologize, that are legitimately good dudes who just happened to be (or once were) apart of the Smash community.

So please take your ass and go do something productive for your Smash scene. Rally your troops, and get them to donate rather than wasting your time sitting here and bitching about SG. As someone who has no horse in this race… I really really really want SG to win just because of guys like you.

So the solution is to put skullgirls (and Sagat) in Smash? ^_^

I think Evo will do more for SG- as it will give them legitimacy, and get them in the Road to EVO events. Smash will get in those events anyways- I mean, they were at NEC, even if like everywhere else they're segregated into their own room.

I'll openly admit I prefer the SG devs/community to the Smash community, and I hope they win, even if I don't have a dog in this fight (I voted for VF)

I don't think Smash can handle the Falcon Knee and tiger kick in one game.

If my estimations are correct, we are pretty close to passing the 75k total mark.

I bet this thing will end with 100k+ for breast cancer when all is said and done.

Thats incredible. I'm really proud of everyone right now.

100k would be amazing but I think 70-80k is a lot more realistic. That said ... SG is creeping up close to Melee again.

Skullgirls - $28,175.34
Melee - $28,922.50

No, I'm saying between all games. We're already at ~75k.

Btw I don't know whats happening but ST is about to pass MLP for (distant) 3rd place. Someone is droppin fat stacks

It's pretty sad to see some of my fellow Smashers melting down and accusing Skullgirls of using unfair fundraising methods. Smashboards has over 100 000 members. If just one tenth of our community donated a measly $5, we'd already have over $50 000 raised, not counting matching and other outstanding contributions.

Less complaining, more donating, people.

Sorry westernHeretic for making you that angry (really sorry) and... good luck! what about learning something today? this may help you: You should respect all the opininons, even the wrong ones. Use that, it seems that you needed it.

What is an "unfair fundraising method"?
