VGleaks: Orbis Unveiled! [Updated]

the number 4 in japan is equivalent to the number 13 in the west. it actually seems unlikely that they will call it the playstation 4.

We really need to staaahp with this stuff. I addressed this pages ago, shit needs to be stickied or something because this comes up like every 5 pages.

Myself said:
Seeing as Sony uses the English words for their numbers for Playstation that kind of just makes it all hilarious to watch people talk about it. Playstation 2 wasn't called Playstation Ni in Japan, it was called "プレイステーション2" and pronounced "Pureisuteshon Tsu". PS3 was called "プレイステーション3" and pronounced "pureisuteshon suri" Sony nor have the general populous ever referred to it with Japanese numbering and even if they did ever decide to refer to them with Japanese numbering, they would be using "yon" anyway.

Pretty much the same reason you see the 4th games in series. You will find many products in Japan with the number "4". You won't find many Japanese products in Japan with "Shi" if they do use Japanese numbering they'd use "yon" anyway. If they don't name it 4, it won't be because of "shi" and more with their general changing in naming scheme among all their products.

do people really think sony is going to not call it ps4 because of the fucking 4=death crap?
wreaks of "i'm an expert on japanese culture"

if they dont call it ps4, its going to be because of other reasons, not some stupid superstitious nonsense.
resident evil 4, final fantasy 4, dragon quest 4, etc

I agree, there are tons of japanese products and series with the number 4.
Dropping the Playstation 4 name makes sense only if they believe that they need to send a message of discontinuity with the past (ex: this is a completely new experience and not the same old things with better graphics).
At the same time not using the Playstation 4 name could create confusion among consumers, people will question if the product is the truly the next generation Playstation home console or some kind of spin off product.
So all things need to be carefully considered.

You're right. Looking at PSP's history I could see some things they would want to dissociate with, but also see how they would want to call it psp2 and say hey, look, we fixed it and then some!

At the same time, PS3 has had its share of misfortune and slip ups, although it does carry the weight of its heritage with it. They may not feel that dissociation from those bad times is worth making such a big change.

We shall see.

The names 3DS, WiiU, Vita are all examples of why Sony should just go with PS4. there is a reason why Apple stick with numbering with their major phone releases. Before it was okay to go with different names for new consoles, but nowadays you get too many revisions of systems that it confuses the masses (DSL, DSXL, DSi, 3DS XL, PSP Slim, PSP Go, 360 Elite, 360 Slim, PS3 Slim, PS3 Super Slim).

If they WERE to call it Playstation Shi, though, they could go back to those awesome creepy ass ads, with dolls crying blood and shit, and have them make more sense.
Do it Sony!

It'll be Playstation 4. No need to add on a silly name. What does it achieve from a marketing perspective? Is there any business benefit? The naming strategy is simple, clear and comfortable at the moment. No reason to ruin that. They're not going to detach themselves from the Playstation brand.

Consoles need something immediately recognizable; il will be called PS4.

Look at the Wii U. Or Vita.

No one knows what the fuck are those things. And if they do, they don't think it's new hardware. Like next-gen hardware.

So, PS4.

Back in the days prior to ps2's launch, everyone was simply calling it that way because nobody had a clue, and yet that was the right name.

Ps3 was pretty much the same, and now we have PS4.

And it's perfect for some (omg, four) games: Killzone 4, Uncharted 4, Resistance 4, God of War 4.

Let me post this again...
Pretty much all of that is the RSX's fault.

Pretty much all the fault of Kutaragi and the Cell design team telling the Sony board that the Cell would be fast enough to negate any need for a separate GPU, then 18mths or so before launch, realising the awful truth, which sent them running to Nvidia, who only had a crippled 128bit 7800,that could meet the cost and power envelope of the PS3 design budget.

Nvidia just provided what they had available to fix a mess all of Sony's making.

I think that's crap. Nintendo (& Sony) are guilty of not doing enough to inform people, both consumers and salespeople, of exactly what their products were.

Look at what MS did with Xbox 360. On the surface it sounds like a peripheral or software upgrade. But once they unveiled it you couldnt go many places without seeing a video of Allard giving any and every detail possible and then some as to EXACTLY what the new console was.

MS did it right. Nintendo totally failed.

We just need to start getting rumors of games now that we have an idea of what's happening with the hardware. Heard anything lately Kagari? :)

Good news: sony joins the HSA Foundation:
http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/30278-hsa-foundation-gets-few-more-members

The HSA (Heterogeneous System Architecture) Foundation is a not-for-profit consortium for SoC IP vendors, OEMs, academia, SoC vendors, OSVs and ISVs whose goal is to make it easy to program for parallel computing. HSA members are building a heterogeneous compute ecosystem, rooted in industry standards, for combining scalar processing on the CPU with parallel processing on the GPU while enabling high bandwidth access to memory and high application performance at low power consumption. HSA defines interfaces for parallel computation utilizing CPU, GPU and other programmable and fixed function devices, and support for a diverse set of high-level programming languages, thereby creating the next foundation in general purpose computing.

Maybe, Microsoft is the eighth founder? why else would it be just left empty like that?

PlayStation Vision.

Actually, was originally joking (eg ColecoVision) but I kinda like it. Orbs, eyes, future... Hmm.

Better saved until PlayStation 5/V though.

This is very possibly what happened, but I don't really have any insight into what went down.

All I know is that the RSX is the cause of most of the problems people have with the PS3. It's interesting to speculate how it got there but IMHO that is neither here nor there.

I'm surprised that more developers haven't followed the Watchdogs/Star Wars 1313 lead and started showing off their "PC exclusive" titles to get their stuff out there before the rush of announcements after the consoles are officially shown.

Are we on names again? It will probably be called PS4 and not Orbis even though there was a ps style orbis logo floating around:

Well, they probably want to make a bigger impact by announcing them for the next gen consoles too.

Where there not rumours that the graphic chip in the ps4 was the reason behind it not being announced last E3?

edit: @above: Square Enix bringing next gen stuff at E3, to me, suggested that it was PS4 related, but who knows.

On that note, I really want to know what Microsoft was doing at Samsung's CES keynote. What partnership do they have?

Nothing big here, but I found this interesting.

When did Music Unlimited launch on PS3? We can assume he moved on to his next project shortly after it launched, and if it really means what I think it means, we can get an idea on how long they've been working on that.

Even tho I do agree and would love a simple PS4 name, this time around we will not be getting that for sure because of japanese strong culture/superstition. Number 4 to japanese citizens is like 13 to other nationalities. It goes as far as food service, where with a selection of cheeses, you get 4 crackers, only for japanese you would bring out 3 or 2 or whatever, just not 4. Therefore, PS4 I can almost bet 99%, will not be the official name of next gen but unfortunately some random name.

Doesn't Nvidia have a habit of over-promising and under-delivering too? I think that's why the 3DS was oriignally going to have a Tegra but was changed later and no-one's went to Nvidia for the next gen.

Also I think that before the RSX there was going to be a GPU that Sony worked with Intel or Toshiba to make.

I think there is a good chance than at E3 2012 Ubisoft and LucasArts still did not sign contracts for buying PS4/X720 devkits. If they did, Im sure they would not be able to showcase anything, even it the games were also targeted for PC.

Well, they probably want to make a bigger impact by announcing them for the next gen consoles too.

That's a possibility but I would imagine they could re-announce the titles for the next gen consoles when the time came and with enough winking and nodding, it would be no secret even with out mentioning the new hardware.

Ahhhh. That makes sense. I had not thought about possible stipulations associated with receiving devkits.

That and the large initial cost are the only reasons that I haven't gotten into PC gaming. I'd be so OCD about tweaking and framerate that I would never get to playing. I like it being the developers' fault when something looks and runs like ass, not mine.
It's only expensive if you start with nothing. Also I got curious about integrated graphics and the the Intel HD 4000 will get you playable 720p. AMD A8/A10 get 50/60 fps on Arkham City high quality settings(no AA), 1080 cuts those numbers in half.
AMD APUs are getting pretty good I would almost say good enough for entry level PC gaming.

I hope the new statement saying PS+ is here to stay and that we can make that investment with confidence is a hint at BC and not just that the service will stay around for next gen

I'm curious of what would they offer in PSN+ during the first year if there are not BC...

From the other thread, this was posted on Beyond3D, it's a good summation of what has transpired so far;
It's not about which system is more powerful. It's the method of how both systems are discussed: We have concrete leaks (VGLeaks, DF) and we have special sauce leaks (Aegis, etc). The latter is what really annoys me. Evertime Orbis seems to be ahead of Durango, someone comes out with some unspecific blah blah. Orbis has better GPU? No problem, Durango has GPU special sauce. Orbis has better RAM? Nor problem, Durango has RAM special sauce. Orbis has 4 CUs for computing? No problem, Durango has CPU special sauce. But they never give concrete information.
