DmC: Devil May Cry is going to fall well short of Capcom’s initial expectations for the game.

Capcom had originally forecast sales of 2m units by the end of its financial year. That has now been lowered to just 1.2m units, Eurogamer reports.

In its first week on sale in the UK the game sold just a third of the number of copies shifted by its predecessor Devil May Cry 4 in the same time period. In Japan it managed around half the sales of DMC4.

It’s potentially a sad end to a tale brought about very much by the fans themselves. Anyone who played Devil May Cry 4 must surely of seen how desperately the IP needed an injection of new ideas and modernisation – which is exactly what the skilful Ninja Theory achieved.

Yet the fans revolted because Capcom dared to reinvent its IP for the 21st century and dared to change the colour of Dante’s hair. It’s really very sad.

A headline suggested by a colleague: “Devil May Cry fans destroy brand out of spite.” That about covers it.

The news comes as Capcom reports a sharp surge in profits.

Technicality, I know, but didn't DMC debut in the 21st century?

Otherwise, I don't get it. DmC is too much of the same thing to be considered a reinvention.
 
They've sold more than a million units, if they haven't recouped yet what they invested the problem is their business model, not their fans.
 
The game only came out a few weeks ago. How about declaring war on a broken front-loaded big budget gaming industry?
 
Sales projections were lowered because Platinum x Konami were releasing new Metal Gear Rising trailers every week confirmed.

"Hmm maybe I'll buy DmC today" *new trailer* "Welp never mind I'll wait"

I'm sure no one thought this way but I know I'd be more interested in -possibly- getting DmC if MGR weren't coming out
 
what is it and "journalists" defending this game so much they insult people who had no interest or was not blown away by it.

I played it good game but not great DMC game but it has potential to be better in a sequel don't see me shouting at everybody to like the game

You want to like your protagonist.

When the protagonist comes off as an abrasive, teenage punk, you really don't want to be in a room with that guy. Let alone a 20 hour game.

The PC port looks pretty solid, I'll pick it up eventually I'm sure...for the right price. I'm not really a Devil May Cry fan in the first place.

Uh, nah. I would have played DMC5, but I simply am not interested in DmC. Apart from that the developers seemed to go out of their way to present the older games as garbage (in terms of character design, story) compared to their game, I'm not a fan of the direction.

Ask yourself this. If DMC had kept moving on from DMC3 and DMC4, would that game be better than DmC? If DMC5 and DmC came out at the same time, would you even consider DmC? Did you buy DmC because you lack no Devil May Cry alternative?
 
It has nothing to do with fans hating the new direction of the game. Maybe people simply don't have any interest in the brand anymore?
 
The majority of the people who buy Devil May Cry are not on GAF. The demo was pretty good and the game plays pretty well despite the 30fps thing (which, again, most people wouldn't care about). If people aren't buying DmC, it's because they honestly hate the redesign. It's one of the reasons I haven't bought it. It's not some war. It's their shitty new Dante and their shitty "FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOOOOUUU" tone.

Nobody's ganging up on them. Shitheads.
 
What is the point of publishing something like this?

Why do people feel the need to give their personal spin on something as objective as sales data?

I more or less agree

I think what it came down to at retail for alot of people who didn't follow it on forums was thinking "this doesn't look like DMC".

rather than that "wow this looks really new and refreshing and the breath of fresh air that the series needed" or whatever Capcom and NT intended

People tend to want something familiar from familiar brands.
 
I'm not a fan of the series - played through the first game, haven't touched it since - but maybe someone with more experience can tell me: Are his comments on DMC4 on-point?

I accept the possibility that *maybe* the series needed reinventing, but Parfitt should acknowledge that maybe it wasn't a very good reinvention? Reviews do suggest that DmC plays okay, but *man*, even as someone who isn't really an established fan of the *old* Dante, New Dante kinda comes across as a grade-A prat. Maybe that's not actually accurate, maybe it's not fair, but it's the impression the promotional media has given me of the character.

I think this is giving the hardcore DMC fans too much credit.

I think the bigger problem is that it is HARD for 3rd person action games to find a mass market apeal in today's environment. I think maybe part of this has to do with Japan going portable crazy. Part perhaps has to do with the funneling of games down RPG or FPS (or a combination therefore) lines. I mean how many 3rd person action games can we list in recent years that didn't make money or barely scraped by?

I loved this game. I would like to see more. It's sad that it didn't do very well, but let's not give the the crusaders too much credit just because they yell really loud.
 
Shoot....I just realized I have all five DMC games.
That's pretty crazy. I could write some huge article about them.

(Of course I kinda suck at the games...so hmm)
 
To paraphrase those awful lines from UT3 "they wanted to break the rules start an open war, well take a look you got your wish".

I don't really care about the redesign that much, I passed because the combat in the demo was merely average IMO in a game series that had stellar gameplay. Will pick it up on sale for 20 bucks or less
 
I don't know what's more obnoxious:

1) The videogame media's constant desire to bash their consumerbase/readership
2) The notion that DMC fans are obligated to buy a game they don't support
3) That they still somehow believe that the negative reaction is about 'white hair' in order to completely dismiss legitimate concerns

It feels like the Mass Effect 3 ending all over again. I find it really silly and irresponsible, regardless of how you feel about DMC or DmC, that an article would blame consumers for not spending their hard earned money on something that they don't want. Maybe they should be blaming the more casual and mainstream gamer that DmC was supposed to cater to?

What is with this antagonistic attitude from VG journalists?
