Asahi: PlayStation 4 to be over 40,000 yen

This is reminding me a lot of the Vita reveal, except even worse because neither of the two have been revealed yet, this price is just speculation, and not one single game has been shown.

Sony is definitely turning things around with the Vita, and I'm glad it's up to them and not Nintendo or MS. Nintendo has been dropping the ball with the 3DS and Microsoft simply wouldn't know what to do with a dedicated handheld.

Sony wowed us all with the Vita price point at E3, and I am expecting the same for the PS4.

Looks like I am probably in the minority, but I think that might be too high for the market initially. I suspect the market is a lot different than 2005/2006, but we'll see.

Is this post for real?

In what world is Sony turning the Vita around and Nintendo dropping the ball with the 3DS?

Does it allow me to play used games?

If so, I'll gladly pay $450.

$399 would be the perfect price point

I expect 399 and 499 SKUs. Only problem for me is the impending Australia tax where I'll pay 40% more for something 4 months late. If it's 100-250 volts I will be importing. I highly doubt they will be region locked either.

Really though, all the people who would carry on about a $499 console need to check them selves before they wreck them selves. look at the tech, the years you will get out of it, 499 is a decent price. IPads and other tablets last maybe 24 months and cost more (for a decent one) and people don't bitch and moan about that. Get some perspective, this will most likely get you 6 years, possibly more.

Of course smartphones are going to be higher on anyone's priority list. It's a phone you use daily and almost constantly. Console buying is pretty much a once a decade-type expense compared to tablet or smartphone buying which is yearly. There is a higher number allowed for this. It's a completely invalid analysis to say that consumers have this magical budget that they won't modify for something like consoles that they don't buy very often. Are there going to be people that get a smartphone over a console? Sure, but something similar could have been said when the 360 was launched.

in 2006 it was nowhere near as bad as it is now. tablets weren't even a thing yet and smartphones were still incredibly rare. the high-end phone experience at the time was like a $99 Razr with no data plan. now many people want a $200-400 tablet, a $300-400 smartphone and many of these people are upgrading yearly. the price crunch on these console devices should've been tighter than ever.

I'm totally with you. Gaffers who think $400 or $449 is going to float well with average consumers are kidding themselves. This time around they cant upsell the blueray aspect so this thing has to justify itself with games.

MS is going to make a media play and big up the kinnect aspect. My guess is we will see xbox marketing showing lots of kinect and non gaming media usage in conjunction with games...Stong emphesis on all it can do for the whole family.

Like I said i think launch will go fine. I don't think either console will find their footing until there at least some SKU at 299 though.

In a "tablets are eating up the market" way?

Or in a "post-GFC" way?

I think the impact of tablets and smartphones with regard to home consoles is overblown - there is far less overlap than with handheld systems. But I can see the latter affecting sales.

Both, but more the latter.

What's more is that unless Sony are pushing some Wii U style tablet controller, I think $399 will be a break even price point for them.

It could be a crazy launch for them if they are selling a profitable box in Japan and Europe from the off and breaking even in Europe.

Relax, man. We all realize this is just speculation at this point, but we are simply discussing the outcome in the event that these things pan out to be true. And I really think since we are getting closer and closer to each reveal, more and more info that comes out will be accurate.

It's fun to debate, and this price sounds about right.

the launch prices in the US are almost always a few ticks lower than whatever the straight yen-to-USD conversion is. i'm expecting anywhere from an aggressive $350 to $400 as a max.

Tablets are different ball game becuase by their nature people see them as a higher valueb device due to its multi function capability. As for smart phones, most people are not paying the 300-500 price for the phones outright, the majority are subsidizing them fully or with discount with their data plans. A straight up game machine better bring some serious innovation and games to justify a high price outside the core gamer demographic.

Both, but more the latter.

Well, with regard to the first, I just don't see the overlap really.

Facebook -> Tablet? Yes. (Ergo, the drive to monetize mobile.)
Desktop -> Tablet? Yes.
Laptop -> Tablet? Yes.
Handheld -> Tablet? Yes.

But console -> Tablet? I don't really see it.

The casual gamer (and I use this to refer to frequency rather than type of game) that contributes to console sales still wants their GTA, Madden, FIFA and COD. And tablets are no substitute.

I could be completely wrong, but I see them occupying different markets and purchase intentions.
