Asahi: PlayStation 4 to be over 40,000 yen

Incredibly Naive
wow 399 this sounds incredible if they really go at it this way. They've got the games, they've got the hype on their side, they've got console that developers won't be confused with. They're doing everything right this time around, and it should knock it right out of the park.

Almost everything.

I'm currently praying to God, Buddha, Krishna, Eywa, The Nine Divines, Suzumiya Haruhi, Samaki Walker and Xenu that they don't pull the "always online" stunt.

As long as they don't do that or price above $500, I'm good. Otherwise... I've got a Wii U and a PC.

Is this a prediction, as some relaying outlets are putting it, or a "our insider says..." situation? Or are they one and the same thing in cases like this?

It does sound about right either way though.

sweat spot for both consoles on $429=429 Euro=429 Pound.
So Europeaners & UKS get sh#ft again.

Naw, it won't translate that way in the UK. Though I can certainly see it being 399 Euros if it's $399 here in the US. The thing is though, you can't judge based solely on the exchange rate. It's not that simple.

VAT is a bitch though. :p

Maybe the gimped small HD version will be $450, but there's no possible way the version hardcore gamers are going to want is less than $499 at launch.

VAT is now 2.5% points higher than when the PS3 launched in the UK.

I would be pleasantly surprised if this comes out at $400. That would be a big deal. I haven't been keeping up with the rumors, but aren't people expecting the GPU to be a modified 7970 with 4GB of GDDR5? That alone would be very expensive!

Over 40.000 yen is quite expensive to me (it's around 430 USD and we all know that this would be translated into 449 for the West, and the article say "over" and not "around" 40.000), but not expensive as the PS3, so it's a good start. I should be able to get one (with offers, price cuts, bundles) within one year after its launch.

40k yens is something like ~427$ ATM, so 449$ for PS4 sounds very likely, which I'm fine with.
The Vita is slightly more expensive in Yen so I'd say it's much more likely to be rounded down to $399, which is what I've always expected for the PS4 based on the rumoured specs.

I'm more interested in what the Durango price ends up being. It has similar specs, but there is a strong possibility of MS bundling a Kinect with every system which would add ~$100, so they actually might have trouble matching Sony.

So they've cut the launch price by a third? They've actually learned something from PS3 launch.

I'll pay 599 for 8GB of GDDR and full hardware ps3 BC. It would also need to emulate ps1/ps2/psp games as well.

40.000 yen - 315 €

I doubt they will sell it that cheap in Europe, they are going to charge us something extra because they can. I expect 400-450 €.

im surprised at all the people refusing to get a ps4 @ $450-499

In a world when people buy each new iPad ranging from 329-499...
We get new ones annually (i think even less of a cycle now)

If you look at this latest console cycle I think that $450-500 while steep is actually quite a bargain.

Still think Sony needs to hit that sweet spot at $399, that price point is beautiful, I think that this generation Sony will be the most expensive again, but justified as I think the new xbox is going to be more media and entertainment and less of a powerful console

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
40k yen is a pretty decent price for a Japanese launch. God knows I paid a lot more for my PS3 at launch.

Here is a full English report from Asahi:

http://ajw.asahi.com/article/economy/business/AJ201302070067

It includes an undated, interesting comment from Kaz Hirai. "Nobody will ever again sell more than 100 million units of a game console". Not sure when he said this?

Also talks about sharing of content with smartphones and other devices, although they may be talking about media other than games (music, video etc.).

They also say "The initial price of the PlayStation 4 has yet to be set, but it is expected to exceed 40,000 yen." So they don't seem totally certain about it.

Expecting a $400 pricepoint.

I'm guessing more of a loss will be taken on the US model - depending on how the yen ends up later in the year.

Don't worry, they'll make a huge profit on the 400€ Europe model (that'll release late).

For that price I'll be better off upgrading my computer instead. No PS4 for me.

If its 400 USD in the US then it will be 630 USD here.

I'll just import it, like I did with the PS3. Got it earlier and payed way less

I'm sorry guys for this quick thread hijack.

Also read on a Dutch news site that the Japanese media (maybe Asahi?) mentioned that the Playstation 4 would release before summer 2013. Sounds insane. Has anyone mentioned this already on GAF?

My (not always reliable) source in Dutch: http://www.nu.nl/games/3132137/playstation-4-ligt-zomer-in-winkels.html

Here is the original article in English.

http://ajw.asahi.com/article/economy/business/AJ201302070067

Sources said Sony plans to get the console into stores in time for this year's Christmas shopping season.

400€ would be good, not great, that'd be 350€. Since PS3 bundles are up to 330€ right now I never expected such a price point though and got ready for 400€.

I'm sure there's at least one launche game I want to play and I'd rather pay 400€ in 2013 (FUCK YOU SONY if you delay us, I'll be super busy in spring 2014) and play a game every now and then then to wait two years or so to save 100€, that makes no sense to me. Save the price of two games but not have the console for a third or so of its supported lifetime doesn't sound like such a good deal. If youre waiting for more realiable Slim models, now that I understand.

Sony studios seem to be aligned to be able to pump out games like clockwork with their multiple teams and soon multiple IPs for the top studios, so I don't expect to have no games to play for the first youple of years. DAY ONE.

She probably wants the money for herself if she hears your prayer. And who's the nobody you listed after her?

It's got to be sub £400 here in the UK for me to merit getting one on launch.

the source.... from the Shadow Lands beyond Asahi?

I don't think the market -- apart of the usual "core" gamer, of course -- is interested in a 400$+ console at this point, regardless of what it's offering. I don't see it doing well, initially (and after a month of launch hype) at least.

$400 loosely converts to ~£255, so let's say £299 after 'complexities'. I think £299 would be a great price but I can foresee Sony botching it at £329 or £349 which doesn't have the same appeal. However, if there is content there day 1 for PS+ members - say a couple of free PSN games and some reasonable discounts of retail equivalents - the PS4 would be much more attractive. BC would be an absolute gem and selling point, but I don't believe Sony will provide it :/.

It amazes me how almost everyone is talking about $400, when the article clearly says OVER 40,000 yen.

I'm expecting $449 for the basic SKU, and $499 for the desirable SKU.
