Next generation means the next console in a line of consoles. Nothing more, nothing less. If you try to make it anything else "Next Gen" then you're leaving the definition of "Next Gen" up to personal opinion. Which is a pointless way to define something, because then the definition is constantly changing.
There were a substantial amount of people who bought an iPhone 4S when they had an iPhone 4, a Gameboy Color when they had a Gameboy, a DSi when they had a Lite,...
I personally believe their marketing machine just flopped. Not that that is the only reason why it is doing badly, but big marketing budgets certainly do help.

Normalising after Wii-mania sharper than other countries and 'gamers' are probably waiting for PS4 and 720. We'll see how that fares, but the blanket bomb excuses approach to trying to blame UK gaming market/economy doesnt make Nintendo's failure any less their fault.

Really poor. But just like the hardware's sales, it's completely down to the fact there's no compelling games to buy. One of the "big" exclusives ZombiU had little impact (which is surprising) and it's mainly just Mario holding those numbers up. With next to no games coming out over the Spring/Summer schedule, it's looking like a horrid 6 months to come from the platform and really little that Nintendo can do. They can't magically put out a Mario Kart/Mario 3D any time soon and really that's the only thing that can re-vitalise the console, coupled with a price drop. By then, there will be 2 new consoles on the market that will feel fresh and exciting, while the WiiU will be at the back shouting for attention.
But the 3DS stands out for me more I think. Considering it was the 2nd best selling hardware in the UK last year, the software sales are abysmal. And dropping further by quite a large % from last year as well. Added to the fact the majority of sales are just from Mario Kart and the 2 Mario's, the platform does not look healthy at all.

As people have stated on GAF for months, the streaming tech being nearly brand new is what jacks up the price of the controller. Neither of the things you posted has it.
Nintendo painted themselves into a corner here and several executives may pay the price.

It really is pretty preposterous. The streaming tech is an "invisible value" to the mass-market, as its not something you can point to and they'll understand "RESPONSE TIMES... LAG.... SHIT WHAT OTHER WORDS", while the hardcore market is the only receptive one. But because you've dumped this expensive tech in, youre also not pleasing the hardcore with beefy specs and a generational jump. Heads absolutely should roll, they couldnt have constructed a worse system unless they perhaps gave the GamePad a 3D screen to jack the price up even further.
Worse still, theres still no big game that points out an absolute necessity to having the pad and your TV screen. Rayman was set to be the only one in earnest and... oh dear.

Very well. Fair, but absolutely not the way I see it.
There was a time for a WiiHD, but that was about 3 or 4 years ago. That´s one of the rare occasions where I agree with Pachter.
Nintendo don´t seem to be able to move a significant amount of hardware right now and after Feb the 20th ( where what I consider "Next Gen" starts ) it will be even harder.
I´m not saying they are doomed - but the are definitely in a dark place right now.
Nintendo have always had it this way in Europe tho, as in an uphill battle, no?

Everyone buying the 3rd party games for PS3 and 360 right now and not falling for the "superior versions! Not the same game!" shit, 3rd parties already slamming the door on Wii U = the system is flat out dead when the the counter attack from Sony and MS happens. Nintendo has had to eat a TON of red ink on 3DS hardware to get there, going against their core business model (never sell anything at a loss) and it's still far off the pace set by the 3DS.
The PS3 is doing fine now, but it lost Sony a bunch of money in the process. Nintendo's long term success has hinged on avoiding this kind of product. They did it with the 3DS and have now followed it up again with the Wii U. This is a troubling situation for Nintendo to be in over the next 5 years.
Except that unlike the Gamecube Nintendo actually loses money on both 3DS and Wii U hardware.
They avoided competing with the PS3 and 360 directly because they disagreed with the razors:razor blades model of doing business and knew they couldn't keep pace from a hardware standpoint. When that asymmetrical strategy actually paid off they got drunk on success and walked themselves directly into the very mistake they tried to avoid with the Wii, but now a technological generation behind the competition.
Nintendo likely still treads water over the next 5 years thanks to strong first party sales and a small but dedicated core fanbase, but Nintendo moved very few Gamecubes while still making a healthy profit. They weren't reliant on an economy of scale to bring hardware prices to a profitable point quickly and subsidize hardware losses with rapid software sales. They could make money on every consumer, from the hardcore Nintendo fan to the college kid who only had a GC and Smash Bros. to play with his buddies. Now that later example costs Nintendo money.
Neither the Wii U or 3DS work in their traditional model, and Nintendo's profits are going to contract sharply as a result.
Do you think engineers work for free? That's the reason why 'newly developed' tech always costs so much in the first run. They need to account for the R&D costs. Once they can produce more units, the cost per unit will go down.

Being able to play Killzone and Tearaway in bed or while on a bench in the park is going to be awesome too. Sony will be pleased to hear theres a newly discovered audience for console parity handheld games.

Thanks for this; hopefully it stops some of the "UK doomed" talk. Sure sales are down, but it is Nintendo causing the vast majority of that decline. Nintendo do seem to have launched the WiiU in a strange manner; I am pondering one for Lego City Undercover but with these sales I can only imagine that third parties will start abandoning the platform.
