I really thought they learned after the 3DS launch. I guess they were really banking on the fourth NSMB game to do business >_>
Well the last one sold 27 million units. Has any sequel ever bombed as hard as NSMB U in comparison to its previous version?

They have no choice. They botched the launch. They said they learned so much from the 3DS launch and learned nothing.
My guess for January:
NA: 300k
Japan: 200k
Europe: 75k
Wow. I keep forgetting how awful the PS3 sales were during some of its initial months. It's like no one wanted a second job.
And Rayman not being delayed for ports for seven months, three weeks out from releaseWhen they set those numbers 8 months or so ago, i would imagine they were working under the assumption Lego, 101, and Pikmin would actually make it out sooner.

I'm glad Nintendo is realizing that they can't bank on the casual fans any longer. I expect them to transform to full hardcore mode once Wii Fit U and Wii Party U underperform.

What Wii-u games are coming out this month?
Basically, I tend to think better software will obviously help. However, I think many people are counting their chickens before they hatch when they surmise that the Wii U is just a Nintendo hit or two away from mainstream success.

Everyone loves the casuals when they flock to your product like sheep but everyone complains when the casuals leave like a bunch of sheep. Casuals are easy come, easy go.
Did the Wii game sell those 27 million units in the first two months on the market?

How did it bomb?

It's really way too early to have any idea of how much, but there's really no chance of it reaching the Wii version's numbers.
Fist of the North Star 2 on eshop a few days ago, and i think that is it.
Unless you actually tie them into an ecosystem like Apple has managed to do with the iDevices. This is where Nintendo failed miserably with the Wii. If you treat your customers as expendable they'll end up leaving unless you give them major incentives to stay. It is not a flaw to go after the mass market consumer. Many business are based on that. Nintendo has just hit the wrong note for like 3 years straight.

The whole marketing strategy is bad, I find criminal for example not focusing on the off TV aspect, it´s non existing in ads.
How do you think MS will keep their Kinect userbase?
Well I think it's way too early to say anything as a fact, though I'm inclined to believe the game won't reach 20+ million. I just found it odd to compare the 2 games. Especially with the game being a Mario game which is an evergreen title.
All these people saying "that's not bad."
No. It's atrocious if true.
No, most of us were expecting sub 100k.
Its unquestionably slow and very disappointing, but far from atrocious.
Its not selling PSP levels.

I don't, and never said I did. In fact with the horrendous Kinect lineup ever since it launch, it being completely overpriced, and MS's overpromises I can see why MS would force bundle it into every Durango.

Oh, I never claimed you did, but rather how they can keep it. I see them bundling Kinect as a way to make sure devs include Kinect features so it has an "edge" (looooool) over the other platform versions.
Kinect seems to be a hit with the casuals though, and they seem to be content with the games coming out for it too.
People also aren't factoring in this was an unusual 5-week January for NPD when doing comparisons with past systems.
No, it only happens every 6 years or so. 2007 was also a leap month for NPD. I don't believe 2006 was - so the 360's weekly average comes off much better. Is January not always 5 weeks?
Is Kinect really a hit? It might have broken sales records at launch, but with the complete silence from MS and the horrendous software sales it seems to have been the biggest fad of the last generation.
It wouldn't be neogaf without words like "disgusting", "embarrassing", "insulting", "shameful" and now "atrocious".
If if 18 million Kinects sold by December 2011 means it isn't a hit, then I'm not sure what a hit is. IMO, the whole reason why the 360 still sells strongly is due to the casuals buying a 360 with Kinect. I can see why it would be more appealing than a Wii/PS Move. Kinect doesn't require any controllers and makes it much more interesting.
I just don't understand how some think this decides the whole 5 years of the rest of the consoles life. DS, PSP, PS3, 3DS. It takes a few good months worth of games to turn a platform around. Some of which you know Nintendo has and some of which I think Sony could get on the Vita (GTA, MGS). It's like Groundhogs day every day here.
Well Kinect's appeal certainly hasn't been reflected in software sales or in increased Kinect lineup. I guess my question was whether Kinect was a long term success or just a one year fad that people don't really give a shit about anymore. I'm sure MS made a ton of money off of it though, but in the same way that Nintendo's last few years of the Wii may have burned themselves going into the Wii U, the Kinect lineup was even more dismal so I question them pushing that as they big advancement this year.
Activision has confirmed that the Wii U version of upcoming title The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct will not be headed to Australia, despite the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions hitting local shelves.
Exactly; makes too much sense!i could see the wiiu at sub 100k
that said
pachter provided actually good analysis
im amazed
It 'was' a hit; but its sale decreased exponentially, apparently by the gap between milestonesIf if 18 million Kinects sold by December 2011 means it isn't a hit, then I'm not sure what a hit is.
