No, its not the most expensive, its the second most expensive after rent costs. Of course any change will impact the overall outcome. Many small businesses are just getting through now, $9 would force them to fire up somebody. Now, if you have a stable growing business... don't be a fucking prick. But for those just starting up, scraping the bottom of the barrel? This makes it harder not just to survive, but to get commercial loans granted. You need to show your business can make up for that raise of cost.

You know what would make it easier to survive and get loans? A good economy, and people at the bottom rungs being able to have enough money to spend where they choose.

The business I work at now would absolutely overwhelmingly benefit from a raise in minimum wage. I know this 100%. For one we all make a bit above minimum anyway, and for two all our customers who are overwhelmingly not high paid executives or anything would have more money to come in.

And just like that you shutdown a number of start ups, be it restaurant or stores. Potential better paying jobs in the future. How to manage this? I'll just fire an employee and make up for the increased cost. That's how many small/medium businesses will see this.

I refer you back to my last post. Tough shit.

There is no such thing as a free market. The government makes the market possible. It creates it.

False.

Even now people wager and exchange items for other items. No government needed. This is already a market.

But this is a conversation for its own thread, let the SOU continue :p

As long as nordic countries exist where average people get tons of benefits (free college, healthcare, job opportunities etc.) + high living wages and inequality isn't staggering the pro-business crowd in the states can fuck off.

Look at how many points he has hit. Instead of focusing on 3 or 4 major reforms, he is bringing up every single talking point relating to just about every subject that is a concern for the American people. I mean there is nothing to disagree with concerning what he is saying. It is just not economically feasible in any form, and he is simply going through every issue that our country faces and pretending like we have a solution.

It's not politically feasible.

Doing these things would be very very economically feasible.

Also, evidence found in New Jersey.

It's simple fact at this point. Early education literacy is the biggest factor in raising educational achievement.

See: Gordon MacInness, In Plain Sight.

Demographic differences (race, age, urban/rural) in the US v. homogeneity in the Nordics make those comparisons pretty flawed.

Aaah, truly spoken as someone who has never tried to set up his own businesses and go through its hardship. Fantastic.

Well you probably got a job because of us *shrugs*

This deserves a vote thing is an excellent rhetorical maneuver. If Boehner gets pushed (or can claim he was pushed) into dropping the Hastert Rule, Obama really will be the new Reagan.

In a study published in Science, Irma Arteaga, an assistant professor in the Truman School of Public Affairs at the University of Missouri, along with Arthur Reynolds, Judy Temple, Suh-Ruu Ou, and Barry White at the University of Minnesota, examined the long-term success rates of Chicago’s Child-Parent Center Education Program (CPC), and found that low-income children who spent two to six years in the program had higher rates of high school graduation, fewer criminal arrests, reduced instances of substance abuse and earned more money than children of the same age who did not participate in the program. Arteaga believes these positive results are applicable for most high-quality early education programs for low-income children.

“Early education programs can have a direct impact on economic success and good health,” Arteaga said. “The findings of this study indicate that these programs provide a strong foundation for the investment in, and promotion of, early childhood learning.

felt like quoting it for the lazy

Meh, a lot of the actual small businesses I've talked to tend to treat their employees rather well, as an integral part of their growth. A lot pay a bit more. It's the shitty big box stores and fast food places that crush things down more and pay almost nothing. Coincidentally they can also afford to actually pay more. McDonald's and Wal-Mart can cry me a goddamned river.

Desaline was born before women had the right to vote and she made it long enough to get a shout-out from the first black President on how badass she is for voting.

I own my own business, and if you're paying your employees less than nine bucks an hour, your business sucks and your employees don't want to work for you.
