GAF is growing

I don't think it's to do with Pachter. I think it's just the lead up to the next-gen consoles.

And getting rid of the approval process would destroy GAF, so no...

Doesn't this always happen around big reveals/events?

PS4 reveal coming up, the controller leak a couple hours ago, Nintendo direct, Durango leaks, etc?

How much money do you think he makes? He's definitely a millionaire right?
As someone who has met him personally I can say, he does not have to worry about money ever again.

Also I love the fact that its growing and we should be glad that the account system is the way it is because that is the only thing keeping this thing alive.

I find it weird that people read without posting. Do they like, read GAF daily? Do they know individual members, despite never interacting with them? I don't think I could frequent a message board where I knew that I couldn't comment.
I frequent a ton of message boards without posting before I feel confident enough to do so, simply because I like the discussion / insight related to the news. As a result, my account is way older than yours, yet you have 50 times my post count. :P

Haha I was reading this board pretty much daily for year before even I registered. It's a really good way of keeping up on the gaming goss in one place, even if I wasn't contributing. Can't be arsed scouring the net for news and now I don't need too cheers GAF :D

Same here. I get most of my gaming news from here, but I don't post often. I usually post when news is relevant to me or I have a strong opinion.

I'm the opposite. I like to read many threads but don't feel the need to post. I generally only post if I actually have something positive to add to the discussion. I've ducked out of alot of threads cause you get some ridiculous comments from people who post for the sake of it.

To cope with the overcrowding and dumbing down of GAF we'll have to implement a forum version of Logan's Run.

After 30 dumb posts your account expires automatically.

It's not that hard. I come here daily, but I'm not logged in 99% of the time.

What does this mean for the site? Will we see account approval removed, or could the site perhaps become only viewable by members?

If that happens, GAF will turn to shit. Seriously, strict moderation is what keeps this forum from devolving into utter trash.

Have you not noticed how many rubbish juniors we've had over the last couple of days? It'd be a hundred times worse without the approval system.

Still beat you son.
I was approved the next day I set up my acount, in fact, when I got the email I thought it was an error or something.

I guess mods figured out I'm sexy.

And a monkey.
Yeah well, I'm sure the person (or monkey) who approved me was way hotter than yours!

Or what if it were actually you, as a way of paying it forward? What if every GAFfer got the chance to approve just 1 account, whichever they want?

I remember when it was like a peak of maybe 1000 or 1200 5-7 years ago. Those were the days when people here were not so uptight.

I lurked here for years until I got a decent email address. I read GAF pretty much daily and knew the prominent members, like Wario and Bish. And I didn't really mind not be able post since someone probably posted my thoughts already and did it much better then I could.

I lurked GAF for a while before I even bothered to register last year. I don't post very often, but there a lot of members here I recognize just from their avatars. In fact, I first looked up DDS from seeing yours :P

My policies are not set by accident or whim, and it's obvious that they contributed heavily to the site getting to where it is today. I'm not motivated by greed, so there's no danger of core principles (minimalism, unobtrusive monetization, strict moderation) being changed to capitalize on additional exposure. We'll keep on keeping on.

Also, we have a 64 Xeon core platform with 124 GB ram, with most of the kinks worked out over the last several months, massively overengineered for our typical traffic. We handled Reddit front page and its 26,666 sustained concurrent, so I'm confident in being able to handle the major events for 2013 and scaling to additional cores and hats as necessary.

OT is hiring good posters, we are currently looking to fill a News editor to post interesting articles once an hour. You will be judged by the amount of revulsion in each news article you post.
We also need new posters in OT that have some good taste in movies.

How much money do you think he makes? He's definitely a millionaire right?

According to EviLore, he was once offered $5,000,000 + a job with the company that was making the offer to buy NeoGAF. I'm pretty sure he makes an easy 6 figures after taxes each year from the ad revenue/page views. The site gains in users, post count, and overall views month-to-month, so he was smart not to sell, especially since he's still so young. I suspect he can sell it for much more than $5 mln even now, let alone in a few years. Not that he seems interested in selling out, just that he could if he ever wanted to do so.

I'm guessing 30-40k a month off ad revenue. He most likely turned down the $5mil offer because he can safely guarantee that income over the next few years and still keep his name attached.

Why can't you use gmail as your email btw? Who doesn't use that these days?

This is the one annoying thing about gaf. I have an e-mail attached here that I don't even have access to anymore.

I suspect the site has ballooned recently because of the excitement for next-gen. Don't think anything much will change, as having non-members browsing the site is probably the bulk of ad revenue.

Site will continue to grow at a steady pace, but this spike probably isn't much to think about.

I think it took me a few months to get posting status, but I don't do much with it.
I used to be very active on a few message boards when I was in my teens, but now I love to lurk!
I also don't have much to say.
