GAF is growing

My policies are not set by accident or whim, and it's obvious that they contributed heavily to the site getting to where it is today. I'm not motivated by greed, so there's no danger of core principles (minimalism, unobtrusive monetization, strict moderation) being changed to capitalize on additional exposure. We'll keep on keeping on.

Also, we have a 64 Xeon core platform with 124 GB ram, with most of the kinks worked out over the last several months, massively overengineered for our typical traffic. We handled Reddit front page and its 26,666 sustained concurrent, so I'm confident in being able to handle the major events for 2013 and scaling to additional cores and hats as necessary.

I just did a fist pump. Not sure why, but I did.

Why can't you use gmail as your email btw? Who doesn't use that these days?
Because having to use a non-webmail e-mail means you won't have it too easy in case you get banned, or want to make an alt account. If Gmail was allowed, all you'd have to do is create a new address, wait a couple of months and that's it. The way it is now, you have to use a personal e-mail (such as your ISP's or work address), and that's supposed to make you care a lot more about your GAF account.

Pretty sure that has to do with how quickly one gets to be approved nowadays. From what I've read over at other forums and what my friends, who all signed up here in the past couple of months, reported to me, it no longer takes more than a month.

I'm currently being interviewed for the GameTrailers NeoGAF documentary, a feature for a major gaming website, and a feature for a prestigious gaming publication, simultaneously. It feels like NeoGAF has hit critical exposure levels since the beginning of the year.

Traffic has increased sharply.

i think we have enough approved users. allow the rest to lurk but thats it. the main gaming/ small sites already get some of their news from us anyways. keep it as it is.

Will you be posting here on the 20th?

That's cause my posting habits have increased tenfold.........LOL! Good to see things going well for you, man, this place is pretty awesome.

do you plan on having another GAF guest come on the show with you?

I find it weird that people read without posting. Do they like, read GAF daily? Do they know individual members, despite never interacting with them? I don't think I could frequent a message board where I knew that I couldn't comment.

I simply read GAF for a year before signing up. It's how most people should do it really.

Then again it's fun to watch juniors go down in flames too.

I was just really shy about signing up before because it seemed hard to jump into the conversations people were having, people seemed to really know their stuff while I felt I didn't know a lot, or I didn't feel like I knew the ropes yet. I'd been lurking GAF since late 2007/early 2008, but didn't decide to register until maybe a few days before Final Fantasy XIII's English release date.

And then I got approved a year after that, hahaha.

But new members seem to come in more frequently lately, and the approval process seems to be faster. I'd like to say that I am a little envious about that, but I feel like the extra year of reading GAF while not posting was for the best in that I felt like I learned what goes and what absolutely shouldn't go when posting.

Yea, I didn't post for a while after I became a member. If you don't get a feel for this place before you post, you may treat it like the IGN boards. In other words, bye bye.

I've had an account made in '08, but it wasn't until a few months ago I felt really compelled to reply to anything.

I pretty much still do that even though i have an account.

Don't think Pachter has much to do with it. There's more gaming news around. New consoles, that ol' excitement. You'll see most gaming sites are increasing traffic as well for the same reason.

I'm gonna go ahead and agree on this. I usually hang out in the Off Topic section, but all these Orbis rumors have tickled my fancy. I'm sure plenty of others can relate.

Why would account approval be removed? If anything, more people creating accounts would mean more time to wait before getting approved.

and here's the part where I brag about having been approved in only 2 days :P

I signed up and I literally had my account the same day. I didn't even know how bad it could have been.

Coming here from those same boards you mention was like night and day. Of course I got a pretty good feel of GAF just by lurking, but it was great to know I didn't need to keep browsing those other forums.

Guys, looks like we found the chosen one. Are you ready to venture into the machine city and fight against the Games Journalism Agents, while dressed in a coat, wearing sunglasses and diving in slow-mo just because it looks cool?

When the front page redesign goes live, it would be fun to have an "introduction to NeoGAF" video produced, about how the site works and what not to do. Maybe narrated by Jon St. John ;b

Yup. There has to be a number of factors involved. A new console generation just started, with more key players yet to make their moves, and of course the increased exposure of the site in major gaming outlets.

No way. The system as it is works well. As mentioned above, getting a feel for the place before you post is crucial! It's fun watching juniors receive the Wrath of Bish ;P

I'll do it for free if you don't mind it sounding like it was done by Gomer Pyle.

Want more NeoGAF merchandise! Finally got around to ordering my first shirt the other night, very excited to have it come in.

Give me a Man Purse to flaunt!

NeoGAF is going the way of Reddit.

Every website I like seems to do that a year or so after I register :(

That seems like way of an overkill, I've worked on a company that handled about 3000 req/s and we did it for much much less.

:lol

GAF tends to get a lot more traffic when generations are shifting as well. I started lurking in 2004 because of all the rumors and discussion that happen about it on here.

Best forum online. The first time I visited and read around a bit, that sealed the deal for me. Sent my info in that day and happily lurked in the meantime until I could post. Have been a member of Gamefaqs for several years, and a non-poster for the latter half of that because, honestly, what a hole.
