GAF is growing

I wonder why the gaming media seems so preoccupied by GAF all of a sudden.

I think it's a bit of confirmation bias since your reading stuff on gaf, and gaf tends to take note when people talk about gaf.

That being said it is surely due to the next generation about to kick off. Our mega threads tend to be a great source of entertainment and gifs and they are widely distributed.

I think the only striking thing is the GT piece that is being made, and that probably sparked some additional discussion regarding the site. We are still a relatively small community compared to other places.

No, Pachter just took credit for it. The filmmaker who produces the GameTrailers Shift documentary series is making it, and Pachter is just being interviewed as part of it so that he can insert some troll comments.

Why'd you bother doing the doc if you knew that's what you were walking into?

I mean, yeah it's good to promote this place in a positive light - wherein logical, albeit somewhat, discussion is encouraged, but then you've got the obvious detractors coming out of the woodwork.

I love this place man. All I'm curious about is you taking charge of this shit. I honestly hope the doc comes out good.

Perhaps the trolling is all in good fun, which I hope it is. This is a good forum and I just hope going forward, in spite of the typical shit that goes on here - good or bad - this forum is recognized. I got here in 2006 thanks to the gradual 1UP migration/dissolution, and I haven't looked back.

Far as I can tell, we're now larger (in terms of activity and eyeballs; legacy post database is irrelevant) than:

-IGN forum
-Gamespot forum
-GameFAQs forum
-Penny-Arcade forum
-SA's video game forum
-Gaia Online's video game forum
-CAG forum
-GameTrailers forum

Those are the big English language video game forums I'm aware of. Appears we're smaller than Reddit's /r/gaming plus all the game-specific subreddits, though I really have no way of drawing a direct comparison in anything other than users online, and I don't know whether I'd call Reddit a discussion forum in the first place. Even so, that's about it as far as I'm aware of.

r/gaming is pretty worthless in terms of good info, imo. I wouldn't even count them.

Wow that's amazing.

I find it weird that people read without posting. Do they like, read GAF daily? Do they know individual members, despite never interacting with them? I don't think I could frequent a message board where I knew that I couldn't comment.

I used to read GAF for at least a year, maybe longer because I lost track of time, before I even applied. Sometimes there'd be things I'd have like to make a comment in, but it was more about getting news, reading stuff, and all. It's quicker and faster to get news here. Soon as it's up on the 'net it's on GAF. Why go anywhere else for it!

Also, removing approval system would be crazy. Think it allows for nice flow with system in place. But even if it was removed, I'm sure the gotta have a real email address thing would stand. Otherwise you'd really be inviting the trolls.

This pretty much is the only site I now read stuff in regards to gaming related news. As think most of the other places are full of shit and dont check themselves.

Well here and checking the mobile version of N4G every now and then, but that place is a mess of idiotic "list" articles.

It took me about 18 months to get an account IIRC. The email address I used originally was one from my own domain and the account got rejected, I tried again with a different account on the same domain and it got rejected and finally I got an email account with an ISP and got accepted. I was Captain Happy that day.

One thing that I learned in that time while silently lurking and being unable to add to the conversation was that if I wanted to be a part of it, and stay a part of it, not to be a bellend as the account can be taken away far faster than it was granted.

I wonder if the percentile of banned Juniors is higher in those who only had to wait under a month to those who had to wait longer.

I'm the same way. Stopped reading other gaming sites entirely about 3-4 years ago. GAF is all I need for gaming news and reviews. Once you learn how to sort out the fanboy impressions from "real" impressions, you really never have to go anywhere else to find out if you'll like a given game.

The most impressive thing about this is that even though GAF has so many users, it can still hold up the high standards it set itself 7 years ago. :D

I'm just very happy that Evilore didn't sell the site when he had the opportunity to do it.
6 years veteran now, my approval was rather quick back then.

Good lord, I don't think anyone will get rid of the approval system. Have you not noticed how many rubbish juniors we've had over the last couple of days? It'd be a hundred times worse without the approval system.

I love you too, Sovan :(

Don't think anything will change just because viewing numbers are larger. People are paying attention to the new console launches, and this site is a good source of news.

Actually, that's about to change with all the juniors that are signing up.

Go take a look at the console war 3 thread to get an idea of what this forum is going to look like

Found out about GAF from the hilarious Bayonetta 2 thread.

Lurked every now and then, didn't decide to make an account until January and that got approved quite fast.

I like the forum, I might not post elaborated posts myself, but I enjoy reading the discussions here.

I waited well over a year for approval. WTF!?

Ever since Pacther declared he would be making a documentary on GAF, and the reveal of the Feb 20 Sony talk, GAF has increased it's viewers to around the 8000 mark. Usually it dwindles around 4000 but Gaming Side has heaps of people viewing now. Off topic has also grown as a result of this exposure.

What does this mean for the site? Will we see account approval removed , or could the site perhaps become only viewable by members? I'm posting this in gaming because the influx is directly related to gaming, and I'm interested to see what Gaming side wants for GAF and the future. Lord knows these numbers are gonna explode come e3 and Durango/Orbis launch.

I sincerely hope not. I also don't think that making the site readable by members only would be useful, for anybody.

I was approved after about six to eight months, I think. Been trying for a long while before that, too - was quite surprised when my email address on my own site wasn't good enough! Seems to vary wildly for people.

Nice to see this great siTe grow..

One question though.. When did Neogaf start to use VigLink.com for the Links ou of this site..?

Some recent trivia may indicate that GAF popularity is indeed growing:

The Kazification is full of GAF references.
I hope it's not a case of GAF ---> internet --> GAF

There's probably someone out there excited to wake up every day to read every single one of your posts, and you have no idea that person exists. :)
