what is the secret to not getting permanently banned from NeoGAF.com?

i dont know if there's a secret - but this has worked for me - i think being nice to others helps and dont do to others that which you wouldnt want done to yourself^_^
Coming from the person with gallons of ban blood on their hands?
You are truly a villain.

There are certain threads posted, based on the subject matter, where you just know its going to be a graveyard at some point.

Don't jump into subjects you're not knowledgeable about. I feel like people want to argue stuff they don't know shit about it, refuse to back down, insult other posters and BOOM...banned. Its a chain reaction of GAF death

Really? Really?

Will give this thread a thorough read later on. Seems like just the thing a newcomer should devote his time to.

Also, to ask a stupid question that probably deserves to be in the "stupid questions that deserve their on thread" thread, there isn't anything on the site that could trigger an autoban, is there? Like if a newly activated junior account doesn't make a post for a couple of months it's terminated, or any specific words/phrases? Like I said, it's probably a stupid question. Just had it in the back of my head for some reason.

Mods, how can I find out who banned me? I tried emailing support but that's a blackhole with no response. My ban reasoning was amazingly poor.

We don't often disclose that, though sometimes people can guess (not as often as people think, though) or someone knows because they reported the post. I do think it is important to remember that bans are viewed by other moderators and if there was anyone who substantially disagreed with the reason given that your ban would have been lifted early (or perhaps shortened). Even if you don't agree with it, I don't think knowing who pressed the buttons initially would make a difference here.

I am a Perma Junior, hope I never do anything to warrant a banning. :/

Bans for perma-juniors are not automatically permanent the way they are (99.9999% of the time) for real juniors.

Don't post around snitches.

Snitches get stitches my lasting appreciation.

is there anyone who has been here for 4+ years that's never been banned?

I'm not a heavy poster but even after that stupid Ambien thread, nope. I tend to lurk in inflammatory topics and if it gets too hot I generally don't post. Sometimes I think it is more interesting to get others opinions on subjects to help refine my own.

When I first started lurking I thought bans were always permanent. That changed when I kept seeing posters who were banned turning up again.

Don't get into arguments, especially on the gaming side. Don't be too vulgar or offensive. Basically never go into the gaming side. Avoid politics and religion threads.

I've never been banned and generally don't avoid saying anything but some cheap shot curses.

I think I've been banned 3-4 times, once for some fanboy war on gaming side I don't remember what about I think it was participation in some back and forth flaming about steam, once or twice for being too hateful towards religion (I disagree/felt I was misinterpreted but whatever) and another for going on an anti-police rant in a thread that didn't need it (justified imo).

The most I was banned for was a month I think due to one of the religious ones. I've learned it's mostly not worth going on rants just to get a rise out of people, you can be 'controversial' as long as it's supported by a decent argument. When random troll-type language gets thrown around without reason/facts that's when you're on thin ice.

I think the modding is fair, I didn't agree with the bannings for using cunt but that's been resolved. One thing I don't like is when a million people quote something that's suspect (or dead wrong/sexist/racist) and that's taken as a sign that they're about to be banned. If it's dead wrong then yea who cares but if it's something that's only slightly controversial I worry if the pressure from posters influences the mods decision or something. Like when a mob demands the local sheriff to do something about someone who isn't that big of a deal.

People like you are the worst.

I think post count matters too. The more posts you make the more likely you are to say something stupid.

That's totally true too. Granted I barely posted from 2004-2008 and mostly still lurked out of habit because I was waiting for almost a year to get approved originally.

1 Corinthians 16:1-24

Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come. And when I arrive, I will send those whom you accredit by letter to carry your gift to Jerusalem. If it seems advisable that I should go also, they will accompany me. I will visit you after passing through Macedonia, for I intend to pass through Macedonia, ...

But what about self-requested bans? I've only been genuinely banned like twice. Maybe three times - one for which is no longer a bannable offense.

Ban history does differentiate between requested and other forms of bans. And there's not an exact quota of bans that adds up to a perm in any case.

I seriously have an easier time of it on the gaming side. I've never been banned for something stupid I said over there so I don't understand the bad rap it gets.

Because OT only posters go over there and post something dumb, someone tells them why it's dumb, and they get mad and tell everyone gaming sucks.

Got my first ban this year posting in an iPhone thread after having owned nothing but iPhones.

What I learned was to stay out of apple threads, period!
