Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

The Shin Megami Tensei/Persona series are not real JRPGs and I refuse to call them that. If it takes place in the modern world instead of a medieval, steampunk, fantasy, sci-fi or futuristic world then it ain't a JRPG no matter how hard you try to convince me!
you might have your flame shield but that argument is void. since jrpgs can have different setting ( mediaval , sci-fi, steampunk ) and still be Jrpgs , have a "current world " setting doesn't change the fact that they are jrpgs ..

This isn't a controversial opinion , but a missuse of sentences themes.

Well in my definition a JRPG will never be something that takes place in the modern world, it might carry the official term of "JRPG" but it will never be one to me and that's just how I view things.

I play my Personas like how I play my Harvest Moons

When I'm in need of a good social simulator.

I play my JRPGS when I'm in need of an epic adventure in a fantasy world, games like this qualify as: Lunar, Grandia, Final Fantasy, Xenogears, Suikoden, Skies of Arcadia, Wild Arms, Tales Of, Legend Of Heroes etc.

Square-Enix should make a Final Fantasy Tactics 4 that combines the great story of the second game and the top-tier strategy gameplay of the third.

MW2 saved the image of CoD4. Before MW2, CoD4 was still considered a camp fest with noob tubes, and a game that everyone can pick up and play with the balance murdering killstreaks. After MW2, fans saw how sucky the series can get. It made CoD4 look like a god-send and better than what it actually was.

Crash was also the only good map on that whole damn game, and that really isn't saying much.

I don't know if this is a controversial opinion so much as a bad one.

I remember the discussions and threads that were made when CoD4 was out. I know what I saw and I know what I see now. The quiet ones back then grew up and are loud now. That's not a bad thing really. It's how the world turns, it's just shocking is all.

Bethesda's games are consistently boring.
I don't care about any of the IPs of Valve.
I like Dragon Age 2 more than Origins.
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is not the best in the series but when the series falls apart.

edit: also, I'm glad Origin and Kinect exist.

I don't get the appeal of Minecraft, I've tried it on ios,Android and on the 360 and I've been bored with all versions.

Bethesda is my favorite developer this gen and can't wait to see what they do the next one

Genres aren't defined by the settings of the game, genius.

I just started the PS2 Xenosaga series, and it feels like it drags on foreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever.
Is that normal? Because I only hear good things about it. Right now, though? It feels like a really bad game.

Chrono Trigger is not the best JRPG of all time, that honor goes to Grandia.

FFVII isn't overrated, that honor goes to FFVI.

Dragon Quest VIII is mediocre

FFXIII, WRPGS and production costs didn't ruin JRPGS this generation. Localization companies such as NISA and Aksys did.

Tales Of Graces F isn't that bad plot and character-wise, people just hate on it because it copy-cats Lunar 2 too much and people don't like copy-cats.

I play Tales games for the stories and characters, and no the series is not "generic animu crap." Each one has a variation in their theme and characters if you actually paid attention!

Tales of the Abyss is the best game in the series and has one of the most original plots of any JRPG

I think I've read the best post on GAF. ever.

Also, what you dictate isn't JRPG doesn't make it not a JRPG. Just saying.

I find TTYD rather boring compared to Paper Mario. (I Haven't finished the game yet, so there is a possibility my opinion may change at a later date)

Well to me its not and I'll continue to hold that opinion no matter what anyone else says. I have my own clear set way of defining genres and games and I prefer to keep it that way, even if its not factual. It feels right to me, so that's the way I'm gonna categorize.

Also, was that first line sarcastic? Or do you seriously agree with most of the stuff I said? If its the latter, thank you for seeing the light!

Don't like RE4. Never have... not sure if I ever will.

There are better pure action games that do action/shooting/crazy shit better.

There are better horror games that do tension/story/everything else better.

It just didn't feel like a resident evil game and I didn't want any part of it. Played it for maybe an hour or two at a friends house. Set it down and never touched it again.

I don't want Square Enix to get back on their feet again. I want them to suffer. I want them to disband. I want their projects canceled. I want Kingdom Hearts to have a nonexistent future. I want everyone who works for Square Enix as a gaming development company to never work on anything ever again.

Hmph!

I think Braid is an awful game.

Also, EurAsianGirl you're fucking crazy.

Edit: Fuck it, while I'm here:

LTTP is average at best.

Let's see...

- I love the Wii U and hope it succeeds.
- The only thing I can think of that would make me buy a PS4, is a new Crash Bandicoot made by Naughty Dog.
- Top-of-the-line, AAA, $100 million dollar budget games will be the death of this industry.
- All Zelda games are great.
- I actually liked Other: M.
- Console wars are ridiculous.
- Majora's Mask (while good) is overrated.
- Graphics are nice, but nowhere near important as good game structure and gameplay.
- The only Sonic game I consider truly unplayable is Shadow The Hedgehog.

Hey, they don't call this a controversial opinions thread for nothin! I just posted my controversial opinions, that are MY OPINIONS! Not facts, OPINIONS!

U mad?

I started playing To the Moon last night for about two hours. I'm probably halfway through with it, but I can't stand the writing and I find it too saccharine and insipid to finish.

I just started the PS2 Xenosaga series, and it feels like it drags on foreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever.
Is that normal? Because I only hear good things about it. Right now, though? It feels like a really bad game.

You're not wrong, duder. I thought Xenosaga was terrible. I don't remember exactly how, but I found an exploit with one of Junior's moves that basically allowed you to win any battle instantaneously. He had was some kind of money/damage converter ability and there was a way to get infinite money in a casino at some point in the game if I remember correctly. Anyway, if it hadn't been for that I wouldn't have bothered finishing the game. I never picked up either of the sequels because I had no interest in the story after that first game. I did really enjoy the soundtrack to the second game, though.

- I will take pretty visuals over gameplay any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

- I couldn't care less about indie/low-budget games.

- I cannot stand games with old/mid-aged male proganists and/or main playable characters.

- I absolutely detest games with female proganists and/or main playable characters.

- EA/Origin is infinitely better than Valve/Steam in almost every category.

No matter how bad you think Metal Gear games can get, Rising does irreversible damage to the future of Metal Gear. So bad it'll need a reboot.

That or it was all just a dream.

In that case, your opinions have been given three NeoGafShitPost stars.

Especially that comment about localisation companies and "modern settings can't be JRPGs", which is more incorrect than entering a boat for the Wrongsville Marathon and then proceeding to only travel 10km.

Coming from a big Xenosaga fan: Xenosaga 1 is not good. Xenosaga 2 I actually consider better since it has a good post game. But you really have to wade through 1 and 2 to get to the awesomeness that is Xenosaga 3. It's worth it.

Also MAJOR LOL at SMT not being a JRPG because it's in a modern setting. You don't just make up dumb criteria like that.

Since Shin Megami Tensei IV has a medieval AND modern setting does that mean it's half a JRPG? What about the Raidou games? They take place in the 1930s.

I'm actually looking forward to the new Xbox console.

I hate the leveling system in multiplayer first person shooters. Just give me cool weapons and well-designed maps, that's all I ask for.

Why?

OoT is not a good zelda game and damaged the franchise beyond repair from the new fans it brought in expecting later games to be like it.

Hmmm...

-I don't like Tifa. She's tolerable in AC but I can't stand her in VII
-I like Chrono Cross better than Chrono Trigger
-Final Fantasy VIII is the best FF
-Twilight Princess is an awful game and is extremely ugly
-Metal Gear Solid is the best MGS
-Metal Gear Solid 4 is garbage

That's all I can think of for now.

Thank you for the responses. I'll try it again when I have more time. I've played slow RPGs before, but damn. This one takes the cake.
