Kotaku Rumor: PS4 out in November, control with your phone/tablet, maybe $429/529

If you look at past sony console launch price, you will find that they never, ever do direct price translation.

For example, PS3 euro launch was 599 euro, in US it was 599 US dollar. By applying exact exchange rate example Euro one should've been below 500.

If Sony launch $39,999 yen for Japan, you are guaranteed to see $399 price in US and 399 Euro in Europe. Mark my word.

US prices are without taxes, euro prices include 20 % taxes (average across Europe). The PS3 pricing was very close to 1:1.

Source seems to be a developer, based on the devkit shots so... Developer GAF:

Is a new console's price and online pricing strategy normally something a console manufacturer would inform you of?

I can't see how it would impact the game development process, so it seems unlikely. The launch date, on the other hand, is something that developers absolutely need to know, so I'd think that part of the rumor is reliable.
No ,also I doubt Sony would tell them so they can leaked it later.

Why wouldn't they? Vita will still be a supported system throughout much of PS4's lifecycle and it's online features are free. Heck, it has far better online features than the PS3, more closely rivaling XBL actually. Why would they charge for online play in PS4 when it will continue to be free on Vita?

It wouldn't surprise me if it was free because it was still in a beta phase of some sort.

do you buy/put PCs together? because with the rumored PS4 specs, this doesn't even really seem like an argument

I sure do, im replying on a PC I build. Just to SLi videocards that will give you comparable performance you are looking at $500-$600 easy. Now you have to get a CPU that wont bottleneck them either. Oh and lets not forget the motherboard either.

Orbis is also following the path first set by Xbox Live: our source says "most" of the PS4's online features will require a premium subscription to use. Sony's new online service will be called PlayStation World, our source says, replacing PlayStation Plus

i see - i admittedly follow, but do not put them together, so you've got me there. again though looking at rumored PS4 specs, i'm not seeing where you'd need SLI to top that GPU, for starters. why not just a single high-end one?

I'd of thought so, I expect this to be a standard feature for games if developers choose to support it. The PS3 has a hardware video decoder so is much easier for them to do than it was on PS3/PSP.

Now that the Vita has Dual sticks too, it only causes an issue for the missing L2/R3 buttons

Those fucking bastards should make it mandatory for every PS4 game. They've been neglecting a massive selling point for some time now (you can already do this with the PSP and PS3, it's just no one used it).

I can't believe some of these reactions. 1 vague word, used by Kotaku of all sites, has way too many people up in arms. They would tell you the Earth is flat if you'd click on the link.

Here's how you word something misleadingly:

Free features:
Online play
Voice/party chat
Demos

Pay features:
Cloud saves
Game watching
Game streaming
Free games

Oh, look! 4>3! That now constitutes "most" of the online features, but probably not the ones you were afraid you'd have to pay for.

If there's going to be a big change to the online model (i.e. pay to play), I think they might mention it tomorrow. They talked about Vita's big downer from the offset (memory cards).

The question of unit price will be left up in the air though.

I'd be highly shocked if you see a dollar symbol anywhere near that conference tomorrow.

MS made the 360 brand cool through online gaming so people would pay it no matter what. Sony doesn't have that luxury.

yes they do it a start of a new gen. I hope they do the pay online gaming..it will help them in the long run. if people pay for XBL people will pay for PSN. it is funny ti see GAF crying about this.

Take away used games, make everything always-online, fine. Whatever.

Charge for peer to peer multiplayer? Fuck you. Not giving any company a cent for that shit ever again.

On the opposite side:

- "LOL Can't wait to see the meltdowns!"
- "Let's see the Sony fans try to spin this!"
- "Sony can do no wrong! haha"
- "Sony charging for online? I'm out."

All of this and we don't even have one shred of confirmed information. Let's not be obtuse here.

All I'm saying is if any of the negatives are true, I can see plenty of people faltering on their resolve to resist.

Why do you think you need 2 videocards?

PS4 is using SLI now? News to me. Last i heard the card was "maybe" comparable to a 7850.

But you would have to retool an entire game to work with just a single analog stick. Not fun.

You quoted the build a PC thread earlier. The third system has comparable if slightly better specs than the PS4. The video card is about the same but the PC has a better processor and more memory.

People seem to forget that these consoles have modify parts in them, they arent just off the shelf parts like a PC. Im not saying you cant build a PC thats performance better but what I am saying its going to cost you more than $1000.

The problem with your thinking is that there will be no Free Games when the PS4 launches b/c there will be no games to give away. Then the problem becomes "how do you get people to subscribe without compelling features?".

Don't tell me that you would pay for the other three, because that is just ridiculous.

You can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that Durango/Orbis pastebin was on any NeoGAF threads before we posted about those codenames. We only found it because we googled "durango + orbis" when we first heard those two names.

I can't tell you anything about our source. One of our top priorities is protecting our sources' identities. Sorry. Everything we know is in the piece.

Source immunity protection and all that jazz, there's always a chance a source might be spilling BS.

These days any gaffer could pretend to be a source just to misguide a horde of gamers or whatever.

But hopefully some of the things you guys have been told are "raw" with a lack of details and explaination.

We don't know all of the features. They could be planning things that we don't know about.

Yes, but they still have components that are based off of existing equipment with some modification. Like i said, the reason consoles come out ahead of similarly specced PC's isn't because of any hardware modifications, it's the optimized code that makes the difference.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but regardless, why would they charge for features that they already offer free in their other current generation system?

I meant, that a lot of things start free and end up costing money later. PS3 and Vita would have been the test phase and PS4 when Sony starts monetizing it.

People are ignoring the fact that first image shows the new improved triggers.

Apologies to the mods for bolding my own sentence but I think its justified here. People are not noticing.

Honestly cloud saving alone is worth enough price tag for me. Beside for people who already own PS3 and Vita, PS plus is just an awesome service. Now for people who want to have nothing but PS4, it may not be a compelling option.

Multiplayer is the most popular feature and thus the one that has to be paid. Game watching will be free for advertising purposes but probably only multiplayer.

There are going to be a lot of angry people if this is true but I'm betting it is. Sony had to have been looking enviously at MS and the Xbox Live Gold money stream for years now.

Shame if they go the paywall ala LIVE. They should atleast keep online play for free and everything else under PS+ (auto updates/auto patches/cloud saves etc)

Those triggers look like the ones you buy to put onto the DS3...so im guessing its improved but I thought they would be triggers.

Price should be $399.99 no more.

i literally just bought a 6950 for $100. you can top the PS4 GPU for a lot less than you're implying, with a good mid-tier mobo & uncerclocked sandy bridge. much larger HDD, and if you shop around, all shipped for well under $1000.

Because all next gen consoles arent just using off the shelf parts. Everything is modify to a some degree for better performance.

agreed, but your argument was simply cost & performance, the fact that console parts are specific/cost more is part of why you're clearly wrong here man. i'm simply saying if you're spending north of a grand to top these specs, you're buying a marked-up packaged deal at retail or otherwise spending poorly.

Sony will not charge to play online.

why not? MS made a fuckton and pulled themselves out of the red. they've got a smaller base & want to grow/subsidize their ecosystem, and already have the beginnings of an excellent system with PS+. it's entirely possible.

or are you rather saying "...because i really don't want them to"? because none of us do.

People are noticing, they're just not caring past the other news. Sony should probably take note

I was just joking. I do think they will charge for online play. I look at the vita as an extension to the ps3 psn. When PSN version 2.0 comes out it will be very similar to XBL because sony needs that money.
