Kotaku Rumor: PS4 out in November, control with your phone/tablet, maybe $429/529

Man if they have 8GB of GDDR5?!!!?

That will be nuts.

Pricing make more sense with 8GB of GDDR5 but I think they will target $499. I would like an option for a SDD model at $549/599.

Fine then. DON'T give them your charity. Go game on PCs.

I simply don't think it's fair for people to demonize Sony for daring to charge money for a service (which is a hell of a lot more than peer-to-peer online gaming these days) that their chief competitor makes hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue annually for offering pretty much the exact same thing. ESPECIALLY when they are suffering financially.

If free online made such a huge difference for consumers in North America and the United Kingdom, they would have flocked to PSN in droves and made PS3 the leading platform. Unfortunately... they did not.

Before you go all-out labelling me as some corporate apologist, I'm not on board with a lot of the other anti-consumer practices being lobbied about... such as excluding used games and removing access to a robust digital download catalog (I've easily spent several thousand dollars in digital purchases I would like to be able to access on NEWER systems going forward and not just legacy platforms).

But the HD console market in most of the world (except for mainland Europe; the console market in Japan is virtually non-existent so it has very little clout) has already given the paid online subscription model a thumbs up. Consumers pay for value and millions of Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers around the world (of which I am one and I don't even play games online OR watch Netflix) have made a statement that they feel the value is there.

Sony can't be faulted for wanting to drive revenue with similar service offerings and I have every confidence that they will specialize their services in such a way that they feel customers will gain even more value from a PSWorld subscription than an Xbox LIVE Gold subscription. Free games, live gaming session streaming and access to their back catalog via PSCloud will all serve to facilitate that and the ball will then be in Microsoft's court to match that functionality for Gold.

+1

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up

All these Kotaku rumours are just BS . Dont believe in these things . Dont know why the site just hates SONY for like eons and isnt banned at Gaf

No , there is no plans for releasing an SKU above 500$. Last i heard , there was gunning for 470$ and a lower sku with 420$ price tag. SONY most probably upped the RAM in the final machine

I have some very concrete info but cant afford to lose my job as all these are just insider infos . Like i said PS4 was showcased to big investors last week . One thing could be right though the Xperia connectivity . But please dont believe in these BS

Good night and i am sure all of you will be happy with PS4 unveiling including the haters :)
Who are you?

I definitely think $429 and $529 ($469.47 and $573.97 after tax for me) are far too high for these systems. But its not their fault they are trying to put some pretty expensive tech in there for what they are offering.

I'm not really taking a side, moreso explaining why they didn't do it in the past when people thought they would.

I think they could now. The quality is there, and I expect improvements in the next gen versus what we see on PS3 now. PS+ is big for them and will (hopefully) be a focus for them in the future. I think their online environment delivers enough value to charge for it.

Now if they put online MP behind a pay wall is also a different question. Tomorrow should be a fun one, no doubt

yea that is what i mean,i don't think online mp will be pay.

I believe a lot of shit, but there's no way this thing is sporting 8gigs of DDR5.

I mean, can that be possible...? Durango might as well not even come out if true. I don't believe it.

Sorry, but posts like these are starting to become very, very annoying.

I love shadow posters.

Fuel the hype!

Anything possible. It will have to be stacked. Or they are not using GDDR5 maybe 8 GB DDR4 stacked on a wide I/O.

hmmmm..... Think ddr4 may give better performance than gddr5. Have to look at the numbers again...

+ 4 gigs of GDDR5 would be quite low on the list of possible upgrades to the specs released.

Why upgrade that when the GPU is the most blatant bottleneck in the design?

The Durango needs 8 gigs because of certain design compromises that are not present in the Orbis, that just sounds like fanboy dreaming (higher number HIGHER NUMBER)

4 GB GDDR is already a lot. Aside from adding to the complexities of the board to a critical degree and pushing Sony outside a reasonable pricing window, there is no value in going beyond the target number...

I think people won't be too angry as long as they keep online gaming free. Which I think they will. I'm looking at this as basically 'enhancing' PS+. Not necessarily taking features away.

I really hope not, but would not be surprised.

Like amir0x said, hopefully if they charge for online they pass some of those gains into a lower price point for the hardware.

If they go higher in hardware and charge for online I think lots of people will be unhappy.

The more I think about it $529 really doesn't make sense unless it has an SSD or the specs are significantly higher than what the leaks say.

Getting 4 GB of GDDR5 is already an accomplishment in and of itself. Pretending like it's chucking in bottle tops is hilarious.

It'll be $400/$500. The extra $29 is probably coming from them taking the earlier ¥40,000 price reported by Japanese news and converting it using current exchange rates.

That said I'll be in for the ¥50,000 model.

Well, just to give my 2 cents, let me post my opinions here.

I believe that basic online play will be free, voice chat will be free, and I also believe that access to streaming apps, like netflix will also remain free, and the reason for that is because their next generation portable is already out in the market, which has all these features for free.

I can however, believe that a lot of their new next gen online features will have to do with the cloud. Things like live spectating, video uploads, gaikai, probably would require a lot of bandwidth, and since these are not sustained through ads, consumers will have to abdorb the cost to have access to these features.

So in summary, the existing online features that are in place for free now in some form, will remain free, but any thing else that is 'extra' will probably require a subscription.

Dude is not about demonizing anyone.
I always shitted on Microsoft for asking you to pay to play online and closing you out of basic things like demos.
I praised Sony for not doing that, and if they're going to do it, i'm going to shit on them just the same.

I understand their game just well, they're a company that aims at making as much money as possible, that's totally fine: i'm a consumer and what i consider in cases such as this, is the business proposition offered to me, which in the case of having to pay to play online, i don't find good enough, as simple as that.

It' all a matter of value for the money and if it's an interesting enough proposition for you as a customer.

Exactly, I rather they upgrade on GPU than go higher than 4

Are source-less/not having talked to a mod info dumps like this bannable? Just wondering.

Yes.

They are by far the most damaging posts on Gaf, by far, creating disinformation and causing sensationalist websites to grab the quote a run with it as a story. Then you have a million more message boards spreading the 'news' off. It's a spiral of shit hitting the turbine.

So is this the thinking "sony will charge for online gaming of the ps4 but not the psvita"?

Doesnt make any sense at all. They just rolled out ps+ to vita. No way this is going to happen.

If they put a paywall behind online play or video apps (YouTube, Netflix, crunchyroll, etc) I am never buying the console. Also if the premium is more than $450 it is going to be DoA. God damn Sony don't make the PS4 a Vita-like situation with ridiculously priced hardware.

They should be aiming for mass market prices like they did with the PS1 and PS2.

I really think we're gonna see tiered online pricing like I've said for awhile.

Probably not true ala carte, but more than 1 level of pricing potentially.

Damn I wanted a PS4, but if they are gonna charge for online I'll stick with msft.
Of course the price for console will weigh on my decision.

I think this is more likely. However, it is WAY too early to talk pricing. I would be surprised if it was announced at E3.

ignore all the $430 stuff. just round it down to $400. sony never prices their products as the straight yen to USD rate. the yen will always be a littler higher.

the PS3 launch price in yen was 6.2 percent higher than the straight USD conversion of $599.99. the difference between the rumored PS4 price in yen of $427-ish is roughly 6.5 percent higher than $399.99.

ie: these people saw the rumor about that 40,000 yen on a gaming site, they googled what the conversion rate was, and are trying to post it as top secret info they are passing along to us.
