Metal Gear Rising spoiler thread: God Bless America!

TRY UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS
Oh my lawd, THIS. So THIS.

Loved Armstrong. Amazing character. A muscled-up Tea Party nutjob with skin-hardening nanomachines who does all the dirty work himself, unleashing lava and throwing boulders at you in the wreck of Metal Gear Excelsius. This, ladies and gentlemen, is why we play videogames. Holy shit.

Amazing theme song, too.

The bit where Armstrong lights up a cigar with Raiden underfoot was so badass I almost want to stop caring about people and go into politics, lol.

I loved the story in this one.

And, it shall not be forgotten that Platinum manages to actually ask all the right questions even if it is done in a humorous, satirical way.

I mean...

Yeah.... it is almost like WE are asked a question.
I have a feeling that more and more questions will be asked.

Of course, at the end of the day, it might just as well be a video game, no one harmed, obviously, but still. When Raiden was hurt and you could hear the police cyborg folks thoughts - clearly they were afraid -, it was not with good taste that I picked up my sword and destroyed them. It was clear, thre Zandatsus and that is it, but it was not fun.

And the Armstrong conversation... damn it. Enough speeches for three full games, lol.

Eh, I don't feel so bad killing people in this game because:

1) They have emotion inhibitors, I don't think they're actually afraid -- more like Raiden hypothesizing their motives/thoughts

2) They have pain inhibitors, so they're not suffering

3) They're (mostly) cybernetic, so it's more like fighting robots

Heh.

Finished it a short while ago. In terms of bosses:

1. Mistral
2. Monsoon
3. Armstrong
4. Sam
5. Sundowner

I really want a sequel right now though, just for the sake of getting Raiden out of that suit. He looks ridiculous.

Anyone like Raiden more as a character after this game? I remember he was really reviled in both MGS2 and MGS4. Did this game make Raiden a more likable character? I, personally, feel he is much better than he was before.

I always liked Raiden. But I also thought that he only got hate cause MGS fans were insecure about losing Snake's "exclusive main character" role, even if for only half a game.

(Same stuff seemingly repeated itself with DmC / DMC, although, I can see why DmC Dante is considered a much bigger "threat" to DMC Dante's existence compared to Raiden/Solid Snake.)

I really don't see how anyone could disagree with you. This game made Raiden seem badass, but sympathetic. I really like the characterization of him in this game, and thought it was much better than other appearances I have seen of him.

Funny note: This is not the first time Raiden has killed a previously elected official turned terrorist.

I really liked the voice work they did with Raiden.

I appreciated MGS2 Raiden more on my replay with the HD collection. He's really not that bad. It's the Rose stuff that really drags his character down. He at least goes somewhere in the story, forms partnerships, and develops.

MGS4 Raiden is awful. He's there to pander to cyborg ninja acrobatics and that's about it. A vast majority of his dialogue is excessively whiny and emo for really no good reason. It's like a really lame and poorly written attempt to make his character dark. He goes nowhere.

Rising Raiden is pretty cool. They kept the MGS4 cyborg ninja concept, but drew more upon MGS2's material and his past.

Are you sure you're not referring to Grey Fox? ;P

All joking aside though, I've always liked Raiden. It was refreshing to get a new viewpoint from which to see the MGS world, and the amazingly memorable ending simply would not have worked if Snake had been the player character.

I also honestly think that if Big Boss didn't look exactly like Snake for three quarters of MGS3, a good number of people would've gotten upset over the "lack of Solid Snake."

I've always liked Raiden. He starts off an annoying shit in MGS2 though but grows in to a stronger and more appealing character once he understands the amount of shit that occurs in the story. Reminds me of Tidus in FFX. Annoying and ignorant at first, becomes a stronger and more confident character as the story progresses and he clues on. I even became sympathetic upon the full realization of how fucked up everything is for them.

With MGS4, Raiden went through something even worse than MGS2's events during the capture by the Patriots in-between it and MGS4, so I understood his turnaround in and around MGS4. Plus the love of his life fucked off with the guy he thought was his commander in MGS2. Obviously he wasn't aware of why this particular thing even happened but I'd go insane as well. Overall he suffered enough bullshit that it would change anyone.

With Rising, by then Raiden embraces that he will always be an outcast and can't live a 'normal life' (as he says in the Codec he tried getting normal jobs and shit but everyone was scared of him cos they could tell he wore prosthetic skin), so he tries to get by on what he knows best. He still has his wife and son so his life is good as it could be given his circumstances. Obviously the events of Rising resonate with him so much due to his own childhood as some crazy child soldier, so it makes him more believable.

Not too keen on his switch back to Jack the Ripper but I guess given the circumstances in the story, he needed to reach within himself to pull that personality back to succeed in the mission. Raging out that people still want to exploit kids for combat purposes made him rage out I guess.

He's got a good arc IMO though I'm not sure where it could go now outside of just going around saving children and stopping evil corporations and shit. As a character, how can he progress? I dunno.

Juat finished it! For me:

Mistral
Sam
Monsoon
Armstrong
Sundowner

Mistral was like Jeanne in Bayo (altough easier). Loved how you keep changing enviroments while fighting. Also, her theme is my fav. one besides Ferry's track. Only downside was the annoying geckos appearing nonstop.

Sam was a legit 1 vs 1, loved it.

Monsoon would have been higher if it wasnt for his debris attack, kind of hate that kind of attacks. Still, it was really awesome.

Sundowner was the worst, I just non-stop evade him onto his back and keep slashing him.

Are you sure you're not referring to Grey Fox? ;P

I might as well be, which was part of the problem. Gray Fox was the original Metal Gear ninja. His exposure in Solid had fans begging for more Gray Fox, and with MGS4 they made Raiden yet another melodramatic cyborg ninja on a dark journey of redemption and punishment. In MGS4 he's really only there to serve fancy cinematics and awful emo monologues.

And the great thing is that with Rising they've kept Raiden as the token cyborg ninja but developed his journey in a way that doesn't make him a shitty Gray Fox clone. They take the cyborg ninja archetype to a different place, and it gives him a far stronger identity than he had in MGS4.

Great post bro! Definitely nails it.

Bwahahahahaha!

The last boss is the most hilarious thing I have ever seen.

And I can't shake the feeling that I am fighting an evil Clark Kent.
Like the Cyborg Superman or something.

Incredible fucking nonsense, even for Metal Gear.

'Nanomachine's son!!' Bwahahahaha
Its like they are parodying themselves as well.

I never disliked Raiden, aside from how he was in MGS4. I felt he was alright in MGS2. This game really opened him up though and made me like him more as a character. He's truly his own now and it's great. I hope Kojima sees the potential in continuing the partnership with Platinum to make another Rising.

The ending of this game would be so much different if it wasn't Raiden there. The banter between Armstrong and Raiden was amazing.

Little thing but anyone noticed the USB flip thing cutscene? :D

Armstrong was just insane, out of the blue, but amazing too.

Theme ranking time!

Red Sun > A Stranger I Remain (beta) > The Stains of Time > It Has To Be This Way = Collective Consciousness > A Stranger I Remain (final) > Rules of Nature

God, the cutscenes in this game were laaaaaaaaaame, except for the bosses. The last cutscene with the girl and the homeless kid was so bad. I hate basically every one of the good guys except Raiden and Wolf.

Best fights for me:

Armstrong
Mistral
Sundowner
Sam
Monsoon

Armstrong had to have been the most completely out-of-left-field final boss I've ever seen in a game. And yet it was also one of the most entertaining portions of the game.

"DON'T FUCK WITH THIS SENATOR!"

Oh and I'll give my favorites of the boss fights too, since everyone else is:

Mistral
Monsoon
Armstrong
Sam
Sundowner

All five were great though.

Winds of Destruction are probably my second favourite boss group, FOXHOUND being at the top, though its very close. Then Cobra, Dead Cell, FOX, and lastly Beauty and the Beast.

Actual gameplay wise, they are the best.

Cobra were so stupid, though, and that's saying something.

Most of their screentime consisted of screaming their own name and abusing a power that's absurd even for the MGS universe. I mean, seiously; name one thing that can beat "Bullet bees are eating your flesh!" in terms of ridiculousness.

FOXHOUND > Winds of Destruction > B&B > Dead Cell > FOX > Cobra

As far as boss music themes go:

Metal Gear Ray (First action gasm)
Armstrong
Monsoon
Mistral
Sam
Sundowner

All the music for these fights is fucking insane though, best action videogame soundtrack ever bar none.

I hope they use the same musical talent for the next game (if there is one). I absolutely love this soundtrack, it fits SO WELL. <3

The stupidity and craziness of it all is what keeps them high. Plus they had some unique gameplay gimmicks, like you being able to poison the Fear and make him throw up, The End and all the ways you can beat him, The Sorrow just being a really cool moment in the game with seeing everyone you potentially killed (plus he's like your best friend constantly helping you in the corner of your eye), etc.

I like Dead Cell just because of Fatman. Fat Mad bomber on roller skates drinking wine is just so insane.

You guys could hear the music through the action?

I heard "something" but making out what it was in the mist of slashing and dashing and exploding? Wat?

Since it seems everyone is doing it;

Sam
Mistral
Armstrong
Monsoon
Sundowner

Sundowner was the easiest and most boring. Evade to the side and attack. Rinse and repeat. Sam is probably my favourite boss battle this gen, so fucking good. Armstrong was awesome NANOMACHINES SON and UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS! will forever be engrained in my head.

You were able to beat Armstrong without drawing inspiration from his theme? I'd still be fighting that fucker if it wern't for the motivational soundtrack.

I listened to Mistral's song prerelease. I played the demo a lot and listened to Wolf's theme. For every other boss aside from Sundowner, I died a couple of times so I became well acquainted with their themes.

One thing I did appreciate after the Sam fight was realizing that the beatdown Sam gave you at the beginning of the game wasn't due to any cyborg components but rather him being a flatout better fighter than Raiden and that there is the implication that Raiden only won because of his new body.

Yeah.. I was struck as well... He was human, not cyborg and managed to beat Raiden's ass... Sam turned out to be a cool character... Too bad they killed him.

VIIIIIIIOLENCE BREEDS VIIIIIIIOLENCE
BUT IN THE END, IT HAS TO BE THIS WAAAAAAY

Yeah, I agree. The soundtrack made the boss fights so much better.

I hope they did. It would take away the awesome from his duel and him passing down his sword to Raiden. Don't do it Plat.

He wasn't dismembered or anything. Even when he was dead, then what would be the problem if some "third force" was watching Raiden all along, snatched Sam's body - brain still ok? Ok. Boombadaboom, nanomachines - Voila! Sam's back for a sequel together with new evil organization behind him.

Nope no thank you i would rather have them create a new badass than reviving the last one. Don't need another Vamp 2.0 situation.

All the boss fights were fun, at least the first time (it looks like this game will be the kind that gives you a bunch of tricks to make the fights stupid, it has already happened to Sundowner for example). Putting aside the fights, I feel like Monsoon and Mistral were a bit underused. They are mostly memorable only for their fighting styles.

Btw, Dead Cell had the most personality by a long shot. (Cobra will retroactively become the best when they make that The Boss game lol)

The only thing I wish they did was have Raiden's new sword be the Muramasa. IIRC it looks like he doesn't keep it.

EDIT: Also something I noticed: Raiden (now armed with Sam's sword) quotes Sam's intro: "Let's dance". Also think he quotes (mocks) Armstrong with "We're done here!" as Armstrong said the same thing more or less before Wolf showed.

I was looking at the metal gear wiki and saw:

If the player beats the game in under three hours and without killing anyone, Armstrong will say an alternate dialogue.

The fuck is this. Is that made up?

heh

I figured there'd be something to reward a no kill playthrough. or a run with under a certain amount of alerts

but not even going to worry about that until after I'm done with the trophies

I just beat it and man that last boss fight was so good. I felt like I was fighting Mike Haggar for most of it. I really liked Rising a whole lot. Kudos to Platinum for finishing the game and redeeming it.

Was there ever an explanation as to why his blood is red now? Please don't say nanomachines.

The white blood was artificial blood implanted in him when he became a robot, and his blood was temporarily stored during that, which they allude to when talking about the cryo tubes in the sewer level.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere legitimate that he got his blood back in the operation before the cutscene at the end of MGS4.

Plus it looked like gallons of Jizz pouring out of his body and that's ridiculous.

I liked white blood. It looked like white paint, jizz doesn't look like white paint come on.
