Metal Gear Rising spoiler thread: God Bless America!

Oh man, "This isn't my sword" is one of the most utterly badass and GET PUMPED moments in all of game-dom.

Also, excellent character analysis, Veelk.

Thank you for reminding me to do this:

Well, that's what I find an interesting discussion point about Raiden. He condemns himself as a psychopath, but I don't think that's true. He does enjoy killing, that much is ingrained into his psyche from his background as a child soldier. But I don't think that alone makes him a psychopath, since at no point did he lose track of his goal (which was noble), or forget his friends and allies. The fact that he is ashamed of the idea that he is nothing more than a murderer alone is telling.

It's not that the idea of wondering whether action games have to force a person to be a psychopath and if they are redeemable people isn't a good one to explore. They truly made raiden a grey character, since you can't say he's entirely a monster but you can't truly call him an entirely noble person either, so I think Kojipro succeeded with him.

The reasons for why Ryu's journey failed where Raiden's succeeded are too numerous to list, but if I had to pick one, Raiden's unfair advantage is that he has a elaborate backstory for KojiPro to build off of that is connected to the MG world at large. The complex was already there, it was just developed further with Rising. In NG1, Ryu's very first act is to attack a nonaggressive ninja, killing him in one strike, noting his youth and merely commenting that he sucked and therefore deserved to die. And that set his character for the next 2 games. There is no compelling reason for him to suddenly question his morality after being alright with them for 30+ years, where as Raiden was always questioning his place in his world from the very beginning.

Interesting, im really starting to enjoy your analysis on these types of games. However, Id argue that raiden is a psychopath, because while he is ashamed he is a murderer, he feels no guilt nor empathy towards his victims. You can feel shame about what you have done without caring about you have effected. Sometimes the shame comes from knowing you do not care.

As for Ryu, NG3 was clearly intended to both to be a soft reboot of the franchise and a way to properly reconcile the characterization of both the 2D and 3D Ninja gaidens. It failed because the concepts of trying to make a player feel guilt for brutally murdering people, while forcing you to brutally murder wave after wave of people are diametrically opposed.

Thats before you bring the Secret service/Ninja Daddy/Oddball combination of terriost magician scientist shit.

It was pretty simple how to write NG3. The curse should of been the more ryu killed, the more he becomes a fiend. Give the player nunchucks, A non-lethal lunar staff and the wooden sword as well as his normal weapons. The non-lethal weapons take twice as long to subdue enemies. Make the entire story about how Ryu is teetering on the edge and If you chose to just kill your way through the game, eventually you have to slaughter your own friends and even your father. The SOB should have been be a bloodlust super similar to DT, but brings you closer to the fiend state. If you play it safe, you fight increasing diffcult enemies all of which are constantly gloading you you to cut lose and really hurt them. If you manage to keep yourself in check, you get the curse lifted before final boss.

It would work on both levels, giving seasoned NG players the challenge they crave, while giving Ryu some much needed character development.

Armstrong has to be one of my favorite final boss fights ever. He's unexpected and hilarious, and at the same time a great challenge to fight. His theme is pretty intense too, really gets you pumped up during the battle.

Here's hoping that Platinum can create an even crazier sequel!

I love the character but i do not want to fight him again

Two left arms and I get a nice sword. Woot

So, "Nanomachines, son!" Best quote ever?

University of Texas!!!!

Yeah, that was another thing I thought was falsely rumored on gaf. I got the idea that he was just going to randomly swear like Donte of DmC did, but I thought they were contextually appropriate for the most part.

Yeah, I had been hyping this game to my friends for weeks, and when I heard that there were "DmC level F-Bombs in Rising" from reviewgaf I was a let down.

Glad to know it was all BS and now I know which Gaf-reviewers to stay away from

"Nanomachines, Son!" LOL

Only Platinum could make me love Nanomachines again

Content of the story was solid, but ultimately the scope and the exposition are somewhat lacking overall. It's interesting but it would've been even more enjoyable with a bit more time invested in building it up. Particularly because I think most of the characters are solid but lack the extra oomph that would've made them really awesome. That's purely on the story end though, gameplay-wise it was on point.

Sam fight could've been more epic though, like it should've been. I like him a lot but I don't think we get enough of him, his backstory, or his actual fight to be the rival he should've been.

Sam's fight felt pretty fitting considering he hardly had any augments in the first place. The slow pacing around, circling and staring at each other made that fight.

Was anyone else hoping that you would get to fight a desperado remake of Raiden? Looking at the Desperado Raiden costume reminds me of fighting yourself in the Ninja Gaiden and those fights were awesome. Especially after fighting AI Mistral and Monsoon. Hell, maybe they could have added it into the plot by making it so Armstrong was framing Raiden for all of Desperados misdeeds.

Listening to Collective Consciousness again, I still enjoy just how foreboding the general sound and the accompanying lyrics are.

The unenlightened masses
They cannot make the judgment call
Give up free will forever
Their voices won't be heard at all

Display obedience
While never stepping out of line
And blindly swear allegiance
Let your country control your mind!

(Let your country control your soul)

Definitely one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a while, in both composition and application.

You're referring to the QTE kill from the first Ray fight, yes?

I think that's just a glitch. When I played that fight, the animation was just fine. Only when I recently watched a friend play it, did that weird skip occur.

Yup, Ray just clips into place when Raiden catches the sword, and I've seen it in every playthrough video of the game so far.

I don't think it's just a glitch. Ray certainly skips an animation or two in that moment.

I played in Japanese and the performances were all quite solid, even if the lip flaps unfortunately didn't match at all. That being said, I wasn't expecting to enjoy the story as much as I actually did. It's straightforward, but as a result it tells a fairly easy to follow story that's entertaining and moves at a nice clip.

I believe EatChildren also mentioned this earlier, but Raiden also gets a fairly strong arc that helps to differentiate him from Gray Fox.

Japanese Raiden's voice is deep as fuck. Love it.

As far as boss battles go, Sam and Armstrong are tied, though for completely different reasons. I loved how personal the former was, and I dug how insane the latter got. The Metal Gear battle was actually pretty damn cool, but in a game of amazing one on one boss fights, it gets a bit buried.

Sam really needed more screen time. As a playable character confirmed for Rising 2. (^o^)

I was disappointed we didn't get another fight with a RAY unit later in the game.

Also, wish Sunny was in the game more.

I'm glad Kojima wants a sequel. I wanna see how they move the story along. I want more of these boss battles.

You know, it never really sunk in that MGS4 lacked an endgame Metal Gear.

The way I saw it at the time was that the new Metal Gear (err Gekkos) had finally been mass produced (the main fear throughout the series), patrolling levels as a standard enemy.

I remember when the first trailer leaked and they showed Gekkos, it was a "Holly shitsnacks" moment. Having one at the end would have been overkill for that game.

In a way, that Metal Gear at the end of Rising almost seemed redundant and shoe horned in. It's ironic that fighting Armstong posed more of a challenge.

I honestly expect a time jump where George and Sunny are well into their teenage years, Raiden along with those two and Wolfie are on the run and Raiden has to get back his kidnapped wife/son.

Did George annoy the piss out of anybody else?

Having to be double subtitled was so ridiculous. Also, it seemed weird that nobody had a problem understanding him.

It had to be a tongue in cheek joke to include the second set of subtitles.

They should've at least got someone who could do the accent well. Rockstar had a similar gag in GTAIV with a Jamaican character who pretty much needed a translator, but it worked more there because it sounded natural and hilarious.

"Are you a sighborg?" always makes me laugh. It's not spelt that way at all, that's just what he sounds like.

I actually really liked George.
