Metal Gear Rising spoiler thread: God Bless America!

What I wanna know is how come Raiden nearly murdered George in the process. I mean, even in the VR training in the demo you are show how to slice people with hostages without harming them. Although a situation like that never occurs in the real game... foreshadowing!

Yeah it felt way too forced to me, the dude can walk on missiles but isn't fast/precise enough to cut the scientists gun wielding hand off.

I think the point of that scene was that Raiden was slipping into his ripper personality. It's not that he didn't care about saving George, but it took lesser priority over killing the guy.

Pretty sure I remember one of the codec conversations stating something to this effect.

There's an alarming number of reviews of this game by people who don't know how to play. I've seen at least three that complained that there's no dodge button. I guess having it mapped to two buttons is confusing to them.

It doesn't help you have to buy it and, of course, the descriptions in the store explain nothing.

Armstrong is like the perfect love child of GodHand-esque Platinum Games and Metal Gear KojiPro insanity. The embodies everything so ludicrously silly and fun about both.
As for the real deal...

They just don't compare.

Yeah I heard the codec, yet if he didn't care he wouldn't have asked George "are you ready?" . The whole scene was dramatized to show the difficulty in decided who to save.

I think Raiden genuinely struggles with his murderous impulses, but I also think that his guilt and self hatred make him think worse of himself than he actually is. It makes an interesting character dynamic to me, because he's somehow less depressing and angsty than he was in MGS4, where he had less reason to be upset.

They are unworthy of their title!

Someone on the last page said Mistral's chapter is set in Africa. It's actually in a splinter state in Georgia, and Georgia is between Eastern Europe and Western Asia, bounded by the Black Sea, Russia, Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

Also, regarding Armstrong, and how people take to him: I don't agree with him, and he sort of represents everything I loathe in politics, but like any good politician, he has alluring charisma, and you can't help but want to see more of him. He stole the show in every cutscene where he appeared (well, except the one in the Mexican lab, I guess), and he was incredibly fun to fight, both thematically and mechanically. I just beat him on Very Hard last night, starting the battle with zero nanopastes, and it was tense as hell until I cut open the boulder to get more.

What I don't get is how Armstrong so blatantly participated in what was happening at the Pakistani base. He was right there on the ground in plain sight. It's true Air Force One had already turned back for America by the time Armstrong stepped out of Excelsus, since U.S. intelligence had already picked up on Raiden fighting the Desperado terrorists there. But are we to believe U.S. intelligence -stopped- watching the base after Air Force One turned back? Because if they kept tabs on it, they would've seen Armstrong emerge soon enough.

In one of the codec calls, your supports doubt Armstrong is at the base, saying he'd more likely have henchmen handle the dirty work than risk blowing his own cover. At the same time, they acknowledge there would be a need for someone to orchestrate activities at the base. They also express doubt Armstrong would put up any sort of fight.

Clearly they were wrong on all fronts. But I still don't understand how Armstrong has no qualms being seen at the site of the assassination attempt on President Hamilton.

Well for one, who would believe a story about a US Senator using a giant spider robot to destroy Air Force One?

That or he'd arrive just too late, earning himself points for trying, but failing to save the president. Using a giant spider robot.

You know, why is Metal Gear Excelsus there, anyway? I mean other than giving Raiden a giant robot spider to suplex? (Hey Sabin? New record!)

You just reminded me that I hated the new Metal Gear name. Excelsus? So bad.

You know, I don't really like the name, Excelsus. I feel like it should have been Excelsius or Excelus. Those just roll off the tongue better imo.

What? Excelsus is an awesome name. It just screams POWER.

Obligatory:

Also, perhaps the plan was for Excelsus itself to destroy Air Force One upon landing?

The design was disappointing too especially compared to the mighty REX and slick Ray. Even the Shagohad was better.

Excelsus was cool I guess, but it shouldn't be a Metal Gear. MG implies bipedalism. That's supposed to be the whole point. :P

Ray is my favorite Gear, but Excelsus' red-on-gunmetal paint-job makes it great by default.

In regards to smaller UGs, I love how GRADs skate around on wheeled feet.

well the point of being bipedal is to make multi terrain tank right? 8 legs are probably better suited for that I think, it can easily climb steep mountains maybe.

Not necessarily. Metal Gear Raxa and Arsenal Gear both broke that rule before Excelsus

call doktor and boris while fighting the excelsus and they will explain why it's there.
Man, if you call kevin he makes you a perfect summary of todays wolrld economy.
The codec in this game is godly. Kojipro writing +platinum awesomness=game of the forever.

Plus it's based on a spider, so it gets extra points from me.

Oh, and best gear was Rex. The clunky, lumbersome design was awesome. Makes it feel like the machine was forged by a giant blacksmith, instead of built in a factory. I'll use this as an opportunity to post this.

Successfully performing all the manual cutting in the Armstrong fight makes you feel like a right (Big)Boss. And what a fight it is, I don't remember a final boss fight this gen being this satisfying.

I wonder if Armstrong, um, "endeared" himself to the Desperado captains by beating the shit out of them, dusting them off, and shaking their hands, too?

I think every gaming podcast I listened to with an MGR review said how bad the Armstrong fight was because he regains all of his health to full multiple times. Face palm.

Blade mode, motherfucker! Do you speak it?

The way to take down Monsoon's shield should have clued them in enough. You didn't even need an EM Grenade or the Sai

Assuming that you aren't being sarcastic, it's X+Square on the PS3 and A+X on the 360.

what the fuck

Offensive Defensive is one of the cheapest moves you can buy from the Customize Menu (3000)

Granted, the game doesn't go out of its way to tell you about this specific move, but I don't understand how people can miss it when the game tells you that you can buy moves and the dodge is the second one listed.

Who is the person that Mistral got her ideals and who she says "je t'aime" to after she dies? It seems like they are setting it up for a reveal, but they never explicitly say who it was far as I can remember. Are we to assume it is either Sam or Armstrong?

Honestly, they probably should've given the dodge maneuver a more memorable and descriptive name.

There's been times where I've suggested to someone that they should use "Defensive Offence", but they mistakenly think I'm just offering a generic battle strategy, NOT the actual name of a specific move. Sometimes I even accidentally mix up the name, calling it "Offensive Defense" instead. IMO, it's just needlessly abstract and confusing.

They probably should've called it something like "Dodge Slash" or "Evasive Strike" to get the point across more intuitively.

she tells I love you to dolzahiev i guess. But about her ideals part, I think she was referring to armstrong.

I think that you should have had it from the beginning. it's quite mandatory sometimes, I mean ow the fuck you beat the final boss without it? Also I think this game needs a double jump ability.

I doubt this, to be honest. Raiden told Dolzaev that she wasn't talking to him, and later neither Raiden nor Kevin could really figure it out on codec either.

I agree with you; the move's name sounds cool but something simpler would have been better.

What should have been done: make the dodge a normal move right from the start, minus the attack and combo continuation. The "offensive" slash and ability to continue combos off the dodge should be the skill available to purchase in the Customize Menu.

This would fit better with the game's lore, since the descriptions of all the moves and upgrades were "firmware upgrades" that let Raiden use his cyborg body more effectively. Did anyone else enjoy reading the item and move descriptions? That plus the Codec calls felt really immersive.

I can never get offensive defensive to ever actually work.

I hit the buttons at the same time but Raiden either does a regular slash or a short jumping slash.

The whole game can be described as Offensive Defense, so yeah, it's a bit confusing.

Wut. The Shagohod's balls.

Excelsus is the best MG since RAY.

Did you miss Raiden's "She's not talking to you, stupid"? It was probably Armstrong she was referring to, since he gave her an ideal to fight for and a purpose in life.

probably yes. But at first I thought she was talking to him and then switched to somebody else.
But I was probably wrong.

Love a lot of the scenes with Wolf. Like when he puts his visor on right after Raiden before the car crash. Wolf explaining Raiden's jokes, making fun of his sarcasm.
I love the scene where he "gives paw" to Sunny, and when Raiden tries it he gets blanked. The little shudder of cyborg rage Raiden has is perfect. Platinum's humour is usually pretty goofy, but sometimes really quaint and charming.

Just finished it this weekend btw, and absolutely loved every minute. Already started a Hard playthrough, and looking to roll right into Revengeance.
