Japanese Vita sales have quadrupled, Sony claims

Sony claims Japanese Vita sales have quadrupled since the company introduced a price cut for the handheld in its home nation last month.

According to a Gematsu, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan president Hiroshi Kawano said yesterday that the portable is now selling roughly four times the number of units it was achieving two weeks prior to the system's price drop on February 28.
Japanese Vita sales came in just shy of 9,000 units during the week ended February 10. Retail monitor Media Create will release the latest Japanese hardware sales data tomorrow, when we should get a clearer picture of the price cut's impact.

Following the Vita price cut, both the Wi-Fi and 3G models retail for 19,980 yen (£139 / $215), down from 24,980 yen (£174 / $269) and 29,980 yen (£208 / $323) respectively.

Asked last month whether a similar Vita price reduction is planned outside of Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment UK told us: "The price cut is for the SCE Japan region only and we have nothing to announce at this time regarding pricing within the our own region."

Lock if old.

I am pretty sure they are using the same source.....the translation is a bit dodgy as people were debating if it meant 4 times last weeks numbers or 4x the total sales two weeks ago. Lets just wait people

So far this is only a short term solution, one that's not good enough. Media Create numbers these next couple of weeks will be telling, but it's nice to see it pick up some speed.

so, maybe 40k weekly?

still not pretty.

and of course, without a software lineup to continue pushing adoption (soul sacrifice is the only title in the foreseeable future with a chance of putting up any sort of meaningful numbers) the price cut bump will be short lived.

That's not good is it? It's like 40k-50k that will go down next week. Hopefully it goes to 20k and not lower.
Wait Soul Sacrifice has not launched yet? Well there is hope then.

Why not make this thread when we have numbers and not just vaguely translated quotes?

Seconded.

But the majority view in the MC thread, FWIW, seems to be that the correct translation is that the sales are 4x the previous two weeks combined, which would be more like 75K. We'll find out tomorrow.

Numbers are in tomorrow. No point speculating.

What's more important is how long it will take before it reaches 10K again. If it stabilises even at 15K then it's better than where it was before.

Hope it turns around, I really do.

Final Fantasy should offer some more momentum, but I really think Sony is banking on the wrong games when it comes to the U.S. Don't see Killzone being a seller.

Third party games like a new GTA or even Minecraft would be huge in U.S.

2週間と比較するとPS Vita本体の売上が4倍程度になったことをSCEJ河野プレジデントが明かしました。

The SCEJ President, Mr. Kano stated that the Vita's sales were about four times higher than the previous two week period, prior to the price cut.

If it was just the sales two weeks ago, not for the previous two week period, I would expect 2週間前 instead of just 2週間 there. However, I could very well be over thinking it. He says 'compared to the two week period prior to the cut' quite clearly.

The translation of that article suggests that Vita sold roughly 76,260 (Famitsu) or roughly 78,000 (Media Create). The true test for the Vita is what happens in the weeks that follow as it needs to sustain the improved sales from this price cut.

Wrong translation, it's saying four times the numbers for the two precedent weeks combined

So (11+8) * 4 = 76k~

Definitely this.

I predict no significant impact on the weekly baseline once the bump fades (<15K by the end of the month, <10K by mid-April), but I'll be sure to acknowledge it if I prove wrong, especially if it's by a significant margin.

Good. I hope this gives some life to the Vita. I'm excited for getting Soul Sacrifice tomorrow, but don't want that to be the end of the platform.
