Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

Man, Nixxes really dropped the fucking ball with this one eh? Didnt they do sleeping dogs too? That was an excellent port. No idea how this one got so fucked up. Ive had some weird shadow issues too, in the forest area at the start, the shadows flicker really fast. Its not super annoying as it does it so fast you only really notice it if you stand still but its weird.

Sleeping Dogs PC was done in-house by United Front. It was also the studio's first PC project.

I've been playing it on a GTX 560 Ti with 310.90 drivers (I just didn't bother upgrading) and haven't had any issues playing it with tesselation, high precision and tressFX off. No issues whatsoever, 60 FPS most of the time. However, I guess I have missed those camera effects mentioned above. I'll try it windowed for the rest of the game I suppose!

Been playing at 1080p with everything maxed out but with FXAA and no hair stuff and im getting 60fps constant.

This thread seems like (yet another) lesson for day one buyers, and another wake up call for publishers to stop releasing games before they are done with QA.

Shameful.

Glitches and crashes + corrupting savegames? Keep supporting this shit fellas, day one, shut up and take my money and whatever other sad anti consumer memes you have.

Apparently the PC version's visuals are broken and a variety of camera effects do not display unless you play the game windowed.

From the screenshots I've seen posted on neogaf so far, I don't think I've seen these effects in any of them, so probably nobody has realized this so far.

Oh wow, it's true, I haven't seen any of those effects. Why do I keep buying PC games on release?

Pretty sure I'm getting those effects in fullscreen.

Exclusive Fullscreen?

I hope I can disable those, once they fix them. I do not think those are compatible with playing the game in 3D. the game has looked nice and realistic so far (with DOF off) which is what I really want out of a 3D game.

Glad to hear that people with 560s aren't having much trouble running the game at decent settings. I'll grab this once a few of the issues have been ironed out.

I can attest to the missing effects on full screen as well. Performance started off pretty strong- with 60fps in most parts (on Max). But everything went to shit once I reached Shanty town. Now getting 30ish in that area. 7970 user here

LOL, I had trouble understanding what you meant by "a 3D game". I kept thinking you meant "a 3D platformer", while you meant "a game that supports stereoscopy". :D

And to be honest these kind of effects do not even look good to me. It's just weird they didn't catch they were missing during QA.

That looks way worse lol

I tried running the game in non-exclusive fullscreen to see if I'd get those extra effects, but the game runs so, so much worse. Went from a locked 60 FPS down to 30-38 FPS. I'll just stay in exclusive fullscreen. I can live without lens flare and whatever else.

i might sound wrong on what im about ti say but i cannot fucking wait for the new consoles, i can live with 30 frames cap as long as the image is native 1080p, this crap we've been getting lately with pc games is crap, you never get that on a closed system

this shit is like the RAGE fiasco all over again, never buying another game day one

I started to play this one for the first time yesterday and I couldn't play for more than 2 minutes without a crash. I'm using a geforce 560 and I get two varieties of crashing; one spits me back out on to the desktop and one reboots my computer. I've tried the 310 drivers and the 314 beta drivers. All of the fancy options - tressfx, tessalation, etc. are off and I still get crashes. A sad day of gaming for me, coupled with the Simcity issues. Ugh.

It's true, problems are not as widespread on consoles SKUs but they very much do exist and the difference is that you can't do anything to get around them.

This dude's PS3 does not load the game's textures: http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=134362

This dude's PS3 just crashes and he cannot proceed with the game: http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?p=1874107#post1874107

usually this are bugs in most of the cases that get resolved by just resetting the game but you do have a point, funny thing is, nixxes did both ports and look where we stand at the moment, they went from good to terrible in my book

What the fuck. Quality port work here.

Yeah that area runs like crap

Definitely some PC games, but they haven't been the majority, at least for me. Past 2-3 years certainly.

Also shows that the game needs a better benchmark. My benchmark runs at pegged 60 fps with current settings, but drops hard in the shanty town.

Yeah, disappointed in the benchmark too. It needs something like Sleeping Dogs, with a variety of locations.

Getting my 2nd 680 card today (first time SLI).

Will I need the latest beta drivers 314.14? I'm still using 314.07 and not having any issues at all. Can I just add SLI bits and not have to update?

The reason is because so many people with SLI 680's are reporting crashes and issues with the game :(

between this , farcry 3, assassins creed 3, there seems to be a disturbing trend of buggy / underoptimized games being rushed out of the door

Whats the difference between fullscreen and exclusive fullscreen?

Hitman has the same option and they said about it:

It's an option that was added to provide a smoother multi-tasking experience. ALT-TAB-ing in and out of the game is much faster without running exclusive, as is switching between fullscreen and windowed, and pop-ups from other applications like a messenger app or e-mail interact better with the game. It's much like running in windowed mode, just without window borders and taskbar.

The advantage of running exclusive is that it can result in slightly better performance, and some hardware features (like AMD HD3D and crossfire) only work in exclusive mode.

Exclusive mode also is the only mode that can actually change display resolution.
If you change display resolution when not running exclusive the game will render to the chosen resolution, but will then stretch it to the desktop resolution.

The game generally runs fine on an 540M, but there sometimes is a huge framedrop out of nowhere and I'm suspecting it's a certain effect, but I just don't know what it is.

I've played a bit on my 2x 560 Tis and managed perfectly playable frames on Ultra (so basically everything but TressFX). Typically around 50-60fps.

That said, there were certain parts seemingly linked with UI elements being introduced that caused the frame rate to just drop to single digits. Sorted itself out after about 10 seconds but was unexpected.

Am upgrading to 660Tis soon, so shall see how much of a difference it makes.

Benchmarks are useless imo

I think the award for Most Useless Benchmark would have to go to the one included with Counter-Strike: Source. The game is heavily reliant upon a speedy CPU to keep the framerate up when there's a lot going on (which is most of the time), but the test level chiefly tests GPU rendering performance. You scored 120fps in the benchmark? Great! Expect 40fps in the game proper.

Just finished this today and it seemed like I was getting a solid 60fps with a 7870/FX-8350 on Ultra all the way through except for Shanty Town, where it would drop into the 30s.

Jesus, I just played in borderless windowed mode to see the post-FX and when I get shot, my entire screen grays out, like completely. I can't see a thing.

Same here. The further the game goes, the more the framerate starts hitting 40s and now 30s up in the mountains.

I started getting wild framerates too so I just capped my frames off at 30 and called it a day. Id rather 30 smooth than 30-60 varying.

Turn Level of Detail to Normal for a more consistent framerate. High and Ultra are ridiculously CPU intensive in more open areas.

I can back this up. In the shanty area and some sea side areas that used to tank my performance, turning level of detail to normal makes them perfect. I'm able to max absolutely everything else, including AA. But as soon as i throw level of detail up one more notch, i lose my perfect 60.

Looks like I'm missing the lens flare effect as well even when in windowed mode.

Here's me:

Here's what it should be:

Also looks like I may have the brightness turned up to high or something. And my DOF looks like its going crazy. Maybe I should roll back drivers.

What exacty does Level of Detail do? Does it work in conjunction with Textures?

It renders more things in the distance, from what I can tell.

EDIT: Looks like I'm not missing much without the blood effects lol, this is what I see when I get shot. Literally unplayable.

EDIT2: Nevermind, it's doing it without the post-fx on, too. No idea what's wrong.

Holy hell, can anyone tell me why they even put DoF in games? Till I started trouble shooting the messing effects I didn't notice how blurry my image was till now...

Here's two shots I took of the game running on the lowest possible settings.
