Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

Any way to get Exclusive Fullscreen to work with Nvidia cards? I suspect I'd get better framerates with that than with borderless window (which is what the non-exclusive one is, right?), but the game doesn't even start with it checked.

I'd love to know this too, I have had no luck with this. Even turning it on in game does nothing.

The game runs so weird for me, it will run at locked 60fps for a good while, and all of a sudden it will shit itself and drop to 20-30fps and stutter like crazy. Tess and Tress are off, hope Nv comes out with drivers soon.

Lol love how most of us been playing the game at what we thought was ultra settings. Dem missing camera effects.

After launch night, I just went back into the living room and bought some console games so I could forget TR existed until it's officially fixed. Has worked so far other than being compelled to read this thread all day, hehe.

I fixed that by disabling Tesselation, but you said you already have it off os i dunno.
This game is in a need for a driver anyways. ASAP

I need to hurry up and finish this game before those camera effects are patched in. After comparing those screen I do not want to have J.J. Abrams levels of lens flair.

Exclusive Fullscreen?
No, I had to disable that - gives me an error message. I'm running what appears to be... fullscreen. I get the lens flares and god rays whether I'm in windowed or fullscreen. 560Ti, 306.97 drivers.

Game runs totally fine... near solid 60fps. 1920x1200, everything high apart from DoF and SSAO. No TressFX, no high precision.

Wow, lowering the level of detail option increased my frames by a lot. I was getting mid 40s at the coastal forest, and now I'm getting a solid 60FPS.

Loss of detail is noticeable from Normal to Ultra though. :(

Holy hell, can anyone tell me why they even put DoF in games? Till I started trouble shooting the messing effects I didn't notice how blurry my image was till now...

The DOF in this game is atrocious, and a performance killer. I'd be going along in some bushes and one would get in front of the camera and drag the game down to 40fps. So useless.

So, for those having Failed to Initialize Direct3D error when trying Exclusive Fullscreen, I managed to fix it completely by turning off GPU Scaling in my graphics options. That's with an AMD card, not sure if there's a comparable option for nVidia cards.

Thank you bassed poster, shit gave me a 10fps bump

Tried to disable vsync?

doesn't work man...how do I turn off GPU scaling?

So, if in this scene I see the shafts of light, as it appears here:

does it mean I'm getting the lighting effects I should be? I haven't noticed anything weird in the game.

I don't have any issues running in exclusive fullscreen.

For AMD Cards it'll be in the Catalyst Control Center > My Digtal Flat-Panels > Properties (Digital Flat-Panel) under Image Scaling. For me, whenever I enable GPU scaling it gives the error but turning it off fixes it.

Alternatively, I found that even with the error if you disable exclusive fullscreen, re-enable it while inside the game then change resolutions twice (to say, 720p then back to 1080p) that also fixes it to run exclusive.

Can anyone else confirm that DX9 mode gives better framerates, or would I just be wasting my time by messing with that? I don't use the fancy DX11 features like tesselation anyway. My GPU would die.

I haven't experienced any issues that some are complaining about.

Constant 60FPS with drops only after cut scenes. Smooth as butter

2600K, 8GB RAM, GTX 570

Granted, I don't use TressFX and have tesselation turned off.

Kind of sad I watched my nephew play Tomb Raider for awhile on 360 last night and It was much more impressive than playing it on my PC with a mix of Ultra / High / Normal settings @ 1080p (i7 920 @ 3.36ghz / GTX 480)

I think the main reason being the 360 is connected to a 50" Kuro Plasma and the contrast and black levels alone destroy both of my PC LCDs (Samsung PX2370 & Samsung 2333T) and believe me it REALLY makes a difference in how you perceive the environments especially in the dark areas where its raining & lightning, Tombs etc.

Anyhow.. I think its time to research a new monitor lol.

Edit: The 2333T actually has great black levels & contrast but it has slow response (PVA / 8ms, ghosting visible) and the color isnt as accurate vs. the PX2370 so I tend not to game on it much.

I shoot my TV out to my plasma for them black levels lol

After some fooling around I figured out that it the effects only work in windowed mode with aspect ratio set to auto. Here is how the shot should look:

Hmm, nope, I get significantly worse performance in DX9 mode with all else being equal. I compared them using the benchmark and one real game scene, and in both cases DX11 gave me about 20 fps more (35-40 vs 55-60 in the game scene).

The patch released last night was 1.0.717.1.

Hopefully they roll it back out soon, today. It made TressFX considerably better (visually and performance).

Hopefully they fix a lot of bugs very soon, achievements not triggering etc, fullscreen camera effects etc etc.

Yeah sorry got sidetracked, I get worse performance in DX9 also no settings changed just the DX9 vs DX11 change, and 20fps sounds about right.

I echo the advice given earlier to lower the Level of Detail from Ultra to Normal. I did that last night and got a 15 FPS boost. The loss of detail in the far distance is minor, IMO. Now I'm getting 60 FPS most of the time, with some drops down to 45 FPS. (Tessellation and H.P. disabled.) This is at 1080p on mid-range hardware (HD 5850 and A8-3850).

Ultra -> Normal Level of Detail is probably the most important settings change I've made, with an unnoticeable change of quality when the game is in motion.

I tried playing in windowed mode, but the lens flare from the camp fires appearing through mountains annoyed the hell out of me.
