Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate announced for Wii U/3DS, coming to West, no 3DS online

Is this game any fun when played single player? I'm not going to be able to play this with anyone else if I do end up buying it. And the demo was baffling--I hit the boss with a sword for 10+ minutes without killing it.

To me, playing Monster Hunter solo is kind of like playing Super Smash Brothers solo, you know? It's fun, but not quite as fun. Those games have longevity rooted in multiplayer. Anyway, playing MH3U HD solo won't rob you of missing out on any of the content since it's all fully available offline unlike in MH Tri.

I agree with TheBoat. Also, I think its fairly challenging to have a go at those monsters by yourself.

Yes. The game is totally solo-able alone and the build up into becoming a badass with countless badass equipment is just as fun. That said, it will be slower going and the exposure to how other people play and their equipment will be missing which adds to the experience.

This is a skill based action game. You will learn how to kill that monster in under the time limit with practice.

You will become better by playing and be able to kill every monster faster than the previous time.As you can see in this thread, most of us who are long time MonHun fans can kill Lagombi in less than five minutes.

There is a single player content which is balanced with one hunter in mind.Of course you will have fun alone. It's just that you will have more fun with a couple of friends.

There's no "online quest only" armor like in Tri, right? The + stuff.

No. Because the multiplier lobby is now accessible in single player. Unless you mean event stuff?

EDIT: I just looked at that skill page. I pray i can be able to gem in a crit and punish draw into a single set. God i love KO's with a GS. I have seen several players online go wtf when i manage it with no hammer users in the room.

Forgive me if this has been answered before, but how viable is the classic control scheme in this version of the game? In Tri, I'm far more used to using the classic controller pro, and having the attacks mapped to the right thumbstick. Is that possible in Ultimate, regardless of whether I use the WiiU controller or the "pro" controller? Also, along those same lines, how viable is the claw method now that the thumbsticks rest above the face-buttons? I am really hyped about this game, but I am worried about how adjusting to the controls will feel. Any opinions on this?

Claw is impossible.
Right analog mode on the other hand will feel even better with the new L button (monster centering). You won't just be fine. You will be better with Ultimate.

Yep. There really is zero need for the claw, and with the day 1 update, they added a camera option for ZL and ZR so you always have control. Its the best controlling version of MH.

That's reassuring. I never felt it necessary to claw with my right hand, just with my left in order to keep my eyes on the prize. If it will feel better with the re-center button, then I'm guessing there won't be any issues. Did it take long to adjust for you? Or was it so intuitive that you picked it up and started rocking it no issue?

Oh nice, euro eshop now has a banner on the MonHun Demo. Saying it will be available on release midnight.

good to see.

now i only a F5 key for my Wii U.

Huh, I didn't know that lol. I was thinking of including Tera in the blog but didn't at last min. Wanted to focus on games that are more different. Thanks for reading!

TERA does this, however at end game its an rng grind. Recent patches have fixed this to a certain extent, but the content is still a little light for endgame.

Andrex, you're definitely going to need to put this in the OT. Found it browsing the MH3-Ultimate site.

I knew I should have messed with the other non-Lance weapons when I was high on Portable 3rd.

How the hell do I use a Gunlance?

Kill it with fire.

Glad these are going out again in 4. Gimmie back my damn Felynes, and put them in every role again. I miss the days of having trays of food thrown at my head.

Also, TERA did a pretty good job of translating a MH-like combat system to an MMORPG but man there's just nothing fun to do in that game at max level. Still, the fights where it allowed you to substitute gear with skill to a certain degree were great. Tank died at 20%? Just dodge the boss' attacks.

Eh... I can't agree. Tera only really did a good job of fastening an incredibly mediocre MMO to an incredibly mediocre Monster Hunter like, it's got a good coat of polish and is accessible but that's about all I'd give it. I mean, I like MMOs and I like Monster Hunter but Tera doesn't do either of them well and it's community is CREEPY!

No, you just need a Wii U and need to get the Packet Relay Tool (which will be free to download on the eShop) along with an Ethernet adapter for the Wii U.
Sweet! (I have a Wii U) I was just wondering since I would mostly be playing this on the go but also would like to try it out online.

Oh yea, it isn't confirmed for North America yet. Only EU and Japan.
What? That's lame, I hope they don't do something stupid like not bring it over here. I haven't played a Monster Hunter in a loooong time and I was hoping to get this to play while I was out.

Question, is this game a remake ? or built from ground up. Wasn't a Monster Hunter game on PSP ?

Short answer: Standalone expansion of Tri featuring all that game's content along with some content from Portable 3rd, which was the last PSP Monster Hunter. And some new stuff.

Long answer: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=42837936&postcount=1849

The next 'built from the ground up' game will be 4 which won't be out for a while. If you're unfamiliar with Tri and Portable 3rd this game will be all new to you.

It's a large standalone expansion for Monster Hunter Tri, which was originally released on the Wii in 2010. (August 2009 in Japan.) It has all the original monsters from Tri, along with a few original ones, some classics, and some taken from Monster Hunter Portable 3rd for the PSP.

The next "from the ground up" Monster Hunter is Monster Hunter 4, which comes out this summer in Japan. (3DS)

The game itself comes out in two weeks, the online patch thing isnt confirmed, but I thought I read it would release in April.

someone in hong kong tried the tool. it seems that the tv screen is needed for input / select certain part. and the whole setup / process is very troublesome. It's better to buy a wii-u game instead.

Well, like I said earlier, I do have a Wii U and as long as it doesn't require me to have the Wii U version to play online it'll be fine. I may get both though because of the transferable saves.

I just read the OP, yeah I hope the patch comes out in the US. I don't see why it wouldn't though.

While I'm also going digital (because no other disc Wii U games would get used ever otherwise), I will say I preferred the Lagiacrus version of the cover art over Bracchy. I'm still just not a fan of his design, I suppose.

Posted this in the custom cover art thread.

It uses the same image as the one made by Alcotholic for the Wii U version.

What type of paper do i need to print this. I'm tempted to go digital too but i'll just keep the cartdridge in all the time.

I rarely print out custom covers, but I usually just use all purpose paper for printing them out. I think you should ask the question in the custom cover art thread.

Any chance anyone knows what the deal is with Gamestop's "Pick up @Store" pre-order option? I was planning on preordering from them as I have a stack of giftcards, and I figured if this was pretty much the same as going to the store in preordering in person, I'd do it this way and save myself an extra trip out now. But if I have to wait for them to ship as if it was an online order then that probably wouldn't be worth it.
