Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate announced for Wii U/3DS, coming to West, no 3DS online

In the demo, anyone manage to beat Plesioth with SnS? Got 'em with every other weapon, but I timed out twice now with this. I guess the proper element really is its bread and butter.

Any chance anyone knows what the deal is with Gamestop's "Pick up @Store" pre-order option? I was planning on preordering from them as I have a stack of giftcards, and I figured if this was pretty much the same as going to the store in preordering in person, I'd do it this way and save myself an extra trip out now. But if I have to wait for them to ship as if it was an online order then that probably wouldn't be worth it.

It's the same as pre-ordering in person except you don't have to put money towards it ahead of time. You do have to enter credit/debit card info., but it won't be charged. You can just pay with your gift cards on release day.

Alright, sorry if this has been asked to death, but I'm having a hard time deciding between 3DS and Wii U.

I'd prefer to play Monster Hunter on a portable, but the online on the Wii U version is damn tempting. I've played both demos and I'm okay with the controls in both. Should I just get over my desire for it on a portable and get it on Wii U? They're patching in off-tv play right? When's that coming?

April I believe, no firm date but it's that month. Could always get one of those later on maybe will drop in price by then and it'll be cheaper etc, now the only question is which would become cheaper quicker =P

In April. While MH is certainly great on the go and in short bursts, it really shines in co-op. Then again, the Packet Relay Tool is going to be released the same day as the game (at least in Europe - don't know if it's confirmed for the US yet), and allows you to take the 3DS version online. If you also own a Wii U and have it connected via an USB LAN adapter that is. The 3DS version plus the adapter should be about as expensive as the Wii U version itself, and you get both online play and portability.

Damn I didn't know that. Makes me want to buy.

It'd be great if you could do local co-op with one player on the gamepad and one on the TV.

i have a problem.

huge car issue unexpectedly came up and, due to the unplanned expenses, i should only responsibly purchase one of the versions until payday. which one would be better to get at launch? i'm thinking of the 3DS one as I wouldn't really be able to delve into the Wii-U one until the weekend, whereas i can take my 3DS to work/class.

I would go 3DS since you can always transfer your progress back-and-forth. Sounds like you'd get the most value out of it. However, you do know that if you use the amazon bundle deal it's only $20 more than the Wii U version to get both, right? $20 is just a few skipped coffees! If you can make it work you'd be saving yourself money in the long run assuming you know you're getting both.

I hope they announce a yay or nay on that packet relay tool for NA before launch. I fully expect we'll get it, as both Japan and EU are, but ya never know.

C'mon Reggie!

oh shit, i didn't know that! i'll go this route! thanks!

We're in final count down here. This Friday may very well be the last time I jump online with Tri before shifting over to Ultimate. Exciting! Can't wait to use a bow on something other than sharkface and bunny.

Would someone mind selling me on this series? Is it basically WoW with Pokemon mixed in?

It has more in common with Phantasy Star Online than either of those.
  • Basically, it's a co-op oriented action-RPG that focuses on huge extended boss fights with dinosaurs, dragons, and other oversized creatures.
  • Maps are broken into a bunch of sub-areas, and the typical mission involves locating and either killing or trapping a large boss monster.
  • The combat is very deep and methodical, with a dozen different types of weapons that each act as a "class" for your character.
  • There's no leveling up, only crafting/upgrading weapons and armor with materials that you get from mining/bugcatching/fishing in the level and of carving up monsters that you've killed.
  • There's an insane amount of replay value thanks to multiplayer, which is online on the Wii U and local for both versions.
Not a series for everyone, but definitely worth trying. The demo isn't a very good introduction to the series, but a pretty good guide has been made recently. Take a look!

I played the 3ds demo and was just lost on what to do. I appreciate the info, I may purchase the 3ds version, I'm really considering buying a Wii U after i clear some backlog first, and was considering picking this up

I just think it's insane that, after 3 years(?), we're finally getting another damn MoHun. I really would have liked to have played Portable 3rd at some point. Dug it's art style... probably moreso than Tri's

It takes some time to get the hang of the mechanics of the game. There is a learning curve that requires some investment. The downside is that it is easy to get frustrated early on and give up. The upside is that you will appreciate the increase in your skill and see that reflected in your hunting of monsters. In short, if you give this game a decent chance by spending some time with it, it's likely you will enjoy the game over a good many hours - provided you enjoy methodical, tactical action games with loot systems.

It's crazy as it's been so long, I can't even remember what it was like to just not understand what MoHun is (O__o)

Can't wait to see Andrex's OT. Just 2 more days.

Think of it as a pseudo-fighting action game with a focus on fighting monsters larger than you. Combat is deliberate and makes you time things like you would in a fighting game. Gathering materials, crafting, and upgrading equipment is how you'll get stronger. You'll basically never finish the game. Think of the game as Smash Bros in terms of single-player vs multiplayer. Single-player is fun, but multiplayer is a hell of an experience.

Hope that sells you on the series.:p

PS: This series is THE series which you would be glad you didn't give up on.

Yeah. It's tough to strike a balance though. On one hand, we criticize annualized franchises that sometimes can offer more production value than gameplay. On the other, we expect loads of content from the games we do enjoy while keeping the gameplay fresh.

I wish I never fell in love with this series. Capcom's shitty localization policies hurt ):

You're completely wrong. The upside is that it's easy to get frustrated early on and give up. It separates the boys from the men, and the girls from the women! And that's just the controls!

Another upside is that the game explains everything ancillary to the hunting of monsters such as the cooking of bbq, but nothing actually relevant to hunting big monsters. Learning the trade through trial and error separates hunters, true hunters, from mere men and women!

Can't. :(

University pretty much limits me from getting a new console, but I will get the 3DS version so when I do eventually get a Wii U along with this game, I won't be behind. <3 Save transferring.

It's all good. Not like Pachter is shutting down Nintendo's servers anytime soon.

I have a weird question. What voices are best to pick for both guy and girl? By which I mean, which are least annoying when running around and grunting?

It's tough because you can't really check them well ahead of time. My first guy in Tri used an older gruff sort of voice and he sounds like a big dog when he runs. My friend was messing around and picked an effeminate voice and he does these really breathy sighs when he runs.

quick question about the 3ds hardware bundle what happens if the 3ds gets wiped for example how do you redownload the game?

Couple of things I'd like to mention:

a) So very pumped for this! Waited way too entirely long; so happy the day is almost here!

b) If you haven't tried it, the teamworkcast.com hunting party system works really well. This site was done by the Teamwork Cast / Monster Hunter Podcast folks and I feel a lot of people tend to think it's really only for their community.

If you don't want to necessarily interact with anyone there, set up a hunting party as private and just shoot over the hunting party link to those you want to hunt. The functionality really works well.

I'd say give interacting with that community a shot; I did and I've since hunting 20+ times (part of the somewhat famous "Dad Hunting Party" there) as well as was on the Monster Hunter Podcast (player name Clem - you can watch the ep here).

c) Very much available to do some hunting with other gafers. Will add NNID when / if the Google doc is in the OT.

I know of it, but first I will GAF a chance before I try finding other people. I know we have enough people on here who I can probably play with.

Slight derail, but I was clearing space for the first time on my 3DS in anticipation for this game's release.

Whenever I erased an eShop game, it basically said that all data and saves would be erased for that game. How do I retain a downloaded eShop game's save files when erasing the core game?
