Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate announced for Wii U/3DS, coming to West, no 3DS online

Slight derail, but I was clearing space for the first time on my 3DS in anticipation for this game's release.

Whenever I erased an eShop game, it basically said that all data and saves would be erased for that game. How do I retain a downloaded eShop game's save files when erasing the core game?

Take the SD card out and back it up to your PC.

Oh boy. Something just had to be fucked up with this game, it just sounded way too perfect :(

Don't put too much stock in that, it's just my super unscientific first impression. I'll fire up my original Wii and play some Tri tonight; it could very well be that I'm just imagining it.

EDIT: It could also be my TV, since my Wii U is hooked up with HDMI and my Wii was always on component.

Sure. Since I have no faith in NoA I had no choice but to go this route. Wanted to make sure I had it on day one.

Well with the new shoulder button targeting I think I can get by without it. Its more about an appearance and convenience thing. I rarely play anything on my 3DS mostly because PS Plus has filled up my Vita with free games. Also when I am sitting in the break room at work the Vita looks like I'm adult (kind of) whereas sitting with a big blue 3DS XL makes me look like a big kid especially if you slap a circle pad pro on top of that :(

Believe it or not the internet has some great guides that are FREE.

That site says they have a section highlighting some of the most important item combinations. Can you point me to a guide for that? Not every combination, I just want to know the most important ones. Is it just like, Dash Juice, Ancient Powder...?

Can you point me one of those?

I can't link to it yet, but there are many YouTubers who post video guides that can be helpful. The two that I find most helpful are SocialDissonance, and iCEMANnoob. iCEMANnoob already has videos for MH3U since he played the Japanese version.

MH-Wiki is also very helpful.

I also think you can just ask MH-GAF questions and stuff since the game is heavily community focused, so any one of us should be able to answer an questions you may have.

That's the only way to retain save data when deleting the game from the 3DS? There's no other way I can delete the game on the system but keep the save data for it?

Nope, not yet at least.

MH-Wiki is also very helpful.

Not in my experience, actually. I've tried to use it but in many cases it's sort of lacking. It has raw data but very little advice.

And things like...I remember there was a Jaggi Mask in Tri that was supposed to be pretty cool, luck for getting better drops. I search for "jaggi mask." The first result is a page on armor you can make from Jaggis and there is no mask mentioned. Then I finally find a page that mentions it and all it says is that it has high speed gathering?

So looking forward to this. Getting the Wii U one first, with the 3DS version to follow. I just hope it doesn't get too hard to find in stores after release. Will also be streaming/recording my hunts on the Wii U version. Maybe get some GAFfers in on that if my friends aren't around to play.

Playing the demo, I forgot how to use the Switch Axe but still remember how to use the Great Sword like I never stopped playing.

So I got the Wii U last week and yesterday I finally decided to sit down and do the Wii > Wii U data transfer.

After doing all of that, which was relatively smooth, I played some Tri for a while. Had a few good casual hunts with randos but then on the 4th mission, I got a Wii hard-lock. The classic frozen screen and "BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" tone. (well, classic to me as I heard a lot of that as a developer working on Wii games)

The Wii U power button didn't do any good. Holding for 10 secs, tapping it, nothing. Had to pull the power cable. Felt bad.

Never once had a crash with Tri on the original Wii. I guess this is a heads up if you're thinking of playing Tri this week, maybe keep it on the old Wii for now.

Thanks for your efforts!

GameFAQs search tool is the best guide.

Hell yes. Need an item? Put the name in the search box, bam directions for 10 different ways to gather it, combine it, fish for it, get it from Trenya etc. Every time.

The most important things in an actual guide would be hitzones, drop rates, and damage formulas. Strategies are covered in countless youtube videos.

So I got the Wii U last week (...) I got a Wii hard-lock. The classic frozen screen and "BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" tone.

I'm nervous about this.
I also picked up a WiiU last week in anticipation for MH3U. Spent the first hour doing the system update, then two hours later I got my first hard lock. In all 3 hours after taking it out of the box.

I'm hoping online play won't be the story of finally getting a group together for the monster you need, wearing it down halfway and then you crash.

Were you playing NintendoLand at the time with internet stuff turned on? There are thoughts that foreign-text Miis and Miiverse posts can cause crashes.

In general it's not a crashy system...no more so than any other. The DS was pretty dang solid and I had a couple crashes over its lifespan. 3DS hard locked on me too a few times in the first few months after buying it, and it hasn't crash since.

Plus if it was a real concern you'd have heard a lot of complaints from Japan, seen advice not to buy the game due to a lot of crashes, etc.

Nope, I had been playing NSMBU and I was fiddling around with the different apps when I got the crash.

That's reassuring to hear. Thanks!

I bought it a few weeks ago but still haven't had a chance to properly read it. A flick though makes me feel that it's a decent guide into why MonHun is a big deal and goes into all aspects of the game in a broad style. It's not a walkthough, it details no missions or monster weakpoints. Just how the different systems work.

Nothing you can't find yourself online, or ask here on GAF. But it is beautifully put together for a fan guide, art is really nice and it's well written.

I've been going through the game for reviewing purposes and it hasn't managed to captivate me in any form.

I'm not a Monster Hunter buff though but this game feels REALLY old, all this loading between areas and the almost archaic graphics... damn.

I think from the examples you gave look old would be more accurate. Feel would seem more to a word you use for gameplay. Everything you mention is more technical issue than a actually playing the game issue. I'm sorry Monster Hunter is not Dragon Dogma. It has more in common with WOW. Since they both are games built from old gaming development techniques, and hardware. If how it looks and keeps you from trying to get into it. It's not and never will be a game you can understand.

I initially felt that MH Tri was archaic, but I learned through practice that Monster Hunter is deceptively clever in its use of methodical gameplay, at least in terms of combat system. It's pretty old school in the other areas of game design, but I suppose Capcom wanted to remain consistent throughout the gameplay systems otherwise it would feel like there would be clash between the mechanics and interface. Does that mean Capcom shouldn't make some improvements to it? No, but people who are used to playing MH don't really seem have a big issue with it. However, it's proven to be an obstacle for newcomers. If Capcom wants to attract a broader audience (like how it wanted to do so with MH Tri), then it needs to obviously make things more accessible without damaging what makes the games fun for fans of the franchise. Being able to move things on to the touchscreen is one way for Capcom to attempt to make things slightly more convenient for the player. Personally, I haven't played the Wii U or 3DS demo, so I have no idea how practical it really is.

Visually, the games haven't been focused on graphical fidelity beyond the appearance of the boss monsters. I think that's been part of why Capcom's been able to make a hefty profit off of this game by keeping developing costs low and prioritizing development of gameplay systems over pushing for graphical fidelity. Of course, the MH games have been limited to appearing on platforms not well known for their hardware power. After all, Capcom didn't take the same approach with MH3U HD as it has done with Resident Evil" Revelations HD. Maybe it will be a slightly different story if Wii U ever gets its own MH game built from the ground up.

As for the loading times, from what I have seen, they are considerably shorter than compared to MH Tri. It's still a questionable design choice about the loading between map areas , and one that Capcom should figure out a better way of handling.

Part of the fun of MH is the progression when fighting monsters. You get beaten by one monster, you work hard and finally beat it. Then the game throws a greater challenge at you and you have to do it all again. Gradually the lower monsters become easy and you get better gear, which makes those harder monster much easier. The circle of life....and loot!

How far you progress is a big factor to how much you enjoy the game, regardless of its aged looks and loading times etc. Get beaten by the first few monsters and give up? Then you have not really played the game and got sucked into the endless hunting and loot-loop that the game is made for.

Sure I would love a real next-gen H game with updates to the graphics and gameplay but then it would not be the clunky MH game people love. :D

I was wondering about something. For those of you who own a Wii U, can you suspend any of your Wii U games while your playing online multiplayer so that you can do something like say, surf the internet?

I highly doubt it. The Home button usually doesn't work while online.

it's a bit depressing that "With Voice Chat!" is a headline :p

Heh, true but it's not so bad given the franchise's history. Capcom didn't exactly handle it well on Wii. I'm not sure about the other handheld MH games, but I think Portable 3rd may have supported voice chat on PSP, but that game didn't come out overseas. I suppose the PS3 version of the game may have supported it as well (but again, it didn't release outside of Japan either). At least the Wii U version has what seems to be the definite version of any MH game. You get the convenience of optionally putting the HUD on the touch pad , off-TV play, voice chat support without the need for a headset (unless the quality of the GamePad speakers prove to be inadequate), and being able to suspend the game so you can surf the internet to look up MH guides and videos. Lastly, there's of course, Miiverse and 3DS connectivity support too.

Man, I'm excited for the 3DS game.

I pre-ordered from a futuristic shop here in Canada and hope it arrives in time for me to bring it with me to PAX East. It will make the drive more fun and I might even be able to go on hunts with fellow paxers :D
