Atomised and The Elementary Particles are the same thing? Just from what I'm searching. Sounds intriguing, might put it on my amazon wishlist.

Yep, Atomised is the US title. According to wiki, the movie is pretty different from the book though so don't expect too faithful of an adaptation. It's a really, really good film on its own, even if it looks a little made-for-TV or straight to video or whatever.

Wreck it Ralph isn't as good as some make it sound. I didn't think it was anything special. I haven't seen Paprika, but the trailer makes it look kind of like generic nonsensical anime. So I'll recommend Persepolis out of the blue.

It's certainly not generic, I'm not really sure what genre you're thinking of. :lol But it's definitely nonsense.

lol c'mon that's some straight up ignorance. In fact, anything Satoshi Kon is far from generic. Even the faces in his animes are more realistic to actual Japanese faces than the googly eyes and other tropes in anime looks. Paranoia Agent, Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress. Mostly psychological thrillers that not only stand out in the anime space, but also easily recommendable to non-anime watchers because of the subject matter.

Paprika is a far better movie about dream logic and emotional baggage than Inception. Perfect Blue is just a movie everyone should watch, a good examination in how creepy pop culture gets where you have stalkers on celebrities, not being able to discern between reality and fiction, and as good if not better than Black Swan. Check the trailer.

all of this and you don't mention Tokyo Godfathers, by far his best movie???

It is ignorance since I haven't seen it and didn't even know what it was about. I never said it wasn't :P. I was simply going by looks and that was the vibe I got. Of course opinion might be bound to change once I actually see it.

About that Perfect Blue trailer, am I the only who cringes at English dubbed anime?

Le dernier pour la route/One for the road (2009)

French film about an alcoholic who goes to rehab and realises the extent to which he has hurt those around him.

Based on an autobiography by a French guy who runs a news agency, I actually found it to be a beautiful and largely uninflected look at alcoholism and the rehabilitation process.

Was lucky enough to have the writer, Agnès de Sacy, come into school last week and talk to us for a couple of hours about her life and work. Really funny woman.

Skyfall. I was not impressed, it was way too long and nothing really happened. Javier was kinda cool villain but he had far too little screen time. Not to mention it was kinda stupid how he went after M. Casino Royale is still the best Bond and I don't even bother to rank QS and SF they were both forgottable movies. QS at least had super hot Bond girl who had decent amount screen time.

I cringe at everything dubbed. Nothing dubbed should be watched ever, if possible.

And watch Perfect Blue it might make you rethink what you see in trailers...

Burt Wonderstone is a terrible movie. Dreadfully unfunny and downright boring. Was a real chore to sit through. Guy two rows behind me kept falling asleep and his snores would wake him back up.

Yeah, I avoid anything dubbed.

I'll definitely watch it (as well as Paprika). I admit I'm kind of cynical with anime. I don't like to see trailers of movies I really want to see, even if I end up hating them.

Some dubs are good, even superior to the original Japanese audio.

Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress do not have those kinds of dubs.

Film4 in the UK are apparently showing all of Studio Ghibli's films, starting on the 26th of this month. I've only ever seen Ponyo, but I'll never be able to watch/record on their schedule. >_<

Also, opinions on The Raven? Popped up on Sky this weekend and I'm curious, might watch it later.

The only dubs I like are spanish dubs of anime like Dragon Ball and Ranma 1/2 from when I was little (specially Dragon Ball, it was so awesome), but I don't like dubbed movies.

Finally watched this movie called Lawrence of Arabia, not sure if anyone has heard of it. It was wonderful.

The picture quality on BR alone makes it a must-own, shit is amazing.

This is one of many MANY films I'm ashamed to say I've never watched. Might pick up the BR.

I watched Paprika after the recent conversation and I enjoyed it. It's beautifully animated and strikes a good balance between lightheartedness and seriousness. Don't think I quite understood it, but that's what dreams are supposed to be like.

Definitely long, and it feels like it at the start, but you'll get lost in it soon enough.

Honestly I spent a lot of the time admiring how good it looked, can't be stressed enough. Dantès spits some serious game on it in here if you want to read up on it.

Hello movie Gaf

Does anyone here knows about a movie that talks about democracy, anarchism, fascism, Nazism, etcetera?

I need one for a class.

Thanks!

Well after a binge of serialized made for TV fiction (Buffy: Awesome / Angel: great / The Trip : good / Battlestar Galatica 2003: great), I've resumed watching actual films.

So...

The Royal Tenenbaums (rewatch). Hated it when I first saw it. Loved it now. I guess I'm paying more attention to details. 4/5

Dr. No (rewatch). Amazing to see almost all the series landmarks were already in place. Gorgeous and the 60's look so cool. Also, pants were worn high and ties short. It kinda bugged me. The plot and villain were quite boring. Ursula Andress is naked at the 01h20 mark but wait no she's actually wearing a skin coloured bikini. Boo. 3/5

The conversation Fascinating study of guilt and paranoia. Movies with very long and sparse scenes are great. Fantastic mood also. My goal in life is now to find the LP of the score so I can broodily stare at the window on rainy days while looking cool. 4,5/5

Uh uh. Both a terribly accurate and misleading answer. Gospeed.

Life of Pi is brilliant filmmaking. How is this the same guy that gave us such a shitty Hulk adaptation. I should check out more Ang films I guess.

hulk was aiight, brokeback mountain was great. very fucking sad and heath ledger is amazing in it.

crouching tiger is pretty damn sweet too.

Oh yeah watch it with Japanese and english subtitles, I just wanted to show you a trailer of the feel for the movie. There is a Japanese trailer but with no subtitles, so you'd be even more confused :P. I never really watch anime with english dubs unless if they're really good.

The Master - Well, that was interesting. It honestly lost my interest at some point so it only had part of my attention during the later half. It has some interesting aspects but the indirect storytelling parts were a tad to much for my tastes.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

Much much worse than I remember. I rewatched the first last week and it holds up amazingly well - the effects aren't that great but it stills instils a sense of wonder into me whenever I watch it.

To be honest I can't think of a single redeeming quality of the sequel. The characters are uniformly terrible - I could have happily watched each and every one of them die - that sense of wonder is completely gone and every encounter is beyond ridiculous (which is a weird thing to stand out in a film about bringing dinosaurs back to life).

Ugh, I fucking hated it and I feel bad for watching it a second time.

Going to buy Lawrence of Arabia now as a means of redemption.
