One month from today: BioShock Infinite

Stupid question time. What's vertical sync?

Syncing your framerate to your refresh rate (or half/quarter of it) and not allowing your graphics card to spit out a frame until the last one has been displayed to stop the tearing effect you see on games. I'm sure someone will explain it better

Valentine, despite no mandatory install, is there an optional one?

No sir, there isn't.

By the way there are fun mini-games in it. And i said it was not needed to speak about its art design but this surpasses Bioshock in every possible way so far in terms of art design. City looks just so beautiful.

This is probably a dumb question but I'll ask it anyway. I got the key for this game today from AMD's Never Settle promotion. If I enter the key into Steam now will it count as a pre-purchase and give me the rewards?

Yep, much appreciated sir! One request, can you be erm...judicious with your spoiler tags as you get further in. Particularly past the opening that Gamespot showed a few week ago.

Of course, i mean i am not gonna talk about the story at all anyway unless somebody asks me about it. But i will be careful with spoiler tags anyway :)

Marketing is really turning me off this game

-$60 on PC
-Steamworks only
-Taking pre-orders on PC
-Pre-order bonuses
-Particularly exploitive bonuses on PC
-Polluting real life with building ads
-Bad commercials
-Slimey box art
-Exclusive review
-Dumb collector's edition
-Treating people like children re: 1999 mode
-Bribe kits for the press
-Taking pre-orders on DLC with barely any details available as to what it is (especially for non-enthusiasts)

I did like the Modern Day Icarus vids (even shared them with some non-gamer friends.) Not sure if I should go for XCOM + being able to play the second it comes out or just getting a used 360 copy at this point.

Much of what you've listed is typical for current big video game releases. How is 1999 Mode treating people like children, though? And how is taking PC preorders a bad thing?

The audio diaries are there. And called Voxophones. Also you can play and read those on the menu whenever you want. Also one correction, disabling HUD markers option disables stuff like Elizabeth's callout icons. Not your healthbar or etc. I couldn't find any option to turn all the HUD elements in the menu.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused as well.

Also, if you're paying $60 for the PC version you're really not looking hard enough. It can easily be had for cheaper than that!

You have whole bunch of stupid points. I fail to see how being allowed to preorder it on the pc is negative in any way. Commercial are not meant for you. Real life ads? Why is this anyway turning you off of the game. Will never get the obsession of people with box art that they will look at for a total of 3 seconds before putting it down and never paying attention to it again. How is adding modes treating people like children? How does the collector edition turn you off to the game? It literally has no effect on your enjoyment of the product.

The Elizabeth stuff and HUD are fine (personally), just the enemy health bars and the christmas light-esque nature of all the prompts popping up in battle are bothersome.

So there's no pick and choosing between what HUD prompts can be turned on/off?

True, and that's why I don't buy a lot of AAA games. For the opposite scenario, I bought Witcher 2 day 1 with no interest in the game because they were handling things as awesome as they were.

-1999 mode: needing to unlock it with a code and causing all sorts of confusion among people due to marketing materials saying you need to finish the game to play it
-PC preorders: just look at this recent SimCity mess. In fact, I think BioShock 1 had widespread problems regarding ATI cards at launch.

You can't hide your own health and salt bars, that was what i meant. I will write one by one so noone will mix them:

- Enemy Health Bars
- Floating Combat Text
- Sky- Line Control Panel
- Enable HUD Markers

You can turn those off or on as you like.

The Simcity mess was a combination of a single player game having to be always-online and fan frustration with said DRM, coupled with overloaded servers that weren't allowing people to play the game they just bought, not to mention how EA has been handling all of this.

I'm still not sure how PC preorders for this game are a bad thing.

So you just want a small viral campaign and Ken Levine to mail it to you in a manilla envelope for $30?

Good marketing campaign. News at 11.

Yeah I'm going to go full blackout now that someone has a copy posting impressions. Enjoy it, Valentine! I'll be reading what you had to say after I complete my playthrough in a week. :)

I do agree that how 1999 Mode is to be unlocked should have been nailed down before 2K/Irrational began advertising it. The game's Steam store page still says you need to finish the game (I did point this out to FOW about two weeks ago in this very thread).

I don't really think it's a good thing to hold developers accountable for marketing/publishing decisions though. If I busted my ass making a game and saw people dismissing it because of marketing decisions I would be pretty sad.

The 1999 thing, fair enough, but I think it's better than a "very hard" mode only unlocking once you've already finished a game.

Gotcha, I thought the HUD icon option was all encompassing (like in most games) rather than being several different options that you can customize.

Sounds great so far.

OK . . . then don't buy it. Bye.

I'm honestly glad he's not interested in it, he'd probably put the disc in upside down with how misinformed and wrong most of his points are...

It's not $60 everywhere.
Games designed for consoles are bound to have an issue or two on PC but I would NEVER compare that to Sim City's situation. also this game had developers working specifically on the PC port, so I'd expect a release as good as Saints Row the Third. No real big issues, but maybe a hot patch here and there the first few weeks.
The commercials and Box Art are not for the knowledgable and informed consumers, they're for the people who have no idea what the game is and are attracted to dudebro things. This is intentional. Ken Levine says it directly because he wants this game to sell well. The game it self is not affected by this.
"Polluting real life"?
Since when are Preorders a bad thing? I love them and I'm a consumer.
1999 mode is a callback to when games were harder and had "Cheat codes" What do you expect? They don't want the less informed players pressing it unknowingly and hating the game's difficulty.

Some of the other stuff is possible negative, but I don't think I'd let them affect my opinion of the actual game. I never really fully trust reviewers anyways.

Valentine71 you promised to show some proof that you have the game otherwise you should stop talking about pirated stuff.

Oh, that's right, the PS3 version has leaked while the X360 version hasn't. First time for everything!

Edit: And it seems there's a day one patch.

It shouldn't turn you off. The reason that they had to market this game should turn you off. We all know Irrational creates much more deeper stuff than most of the AAA games out there. They HAVE TO MARKET it this way to make it SELL. And as a both gamer and an old gaming reviewer (i hate to call it journalism) i would like it to sell well. So to make that, if they have to market it like a COD, GOW or Halo game, just let them do it. This game has substance, depth and its a compilation of many philosophies. It has a soul. But if marketing it like any mainstream shit gonna make it sell, just please let them do it.

And when it comes to your points, i will say what i think.

-$60 on PC
+How much should it be?
-Steamworks only
+Some are these days
-Taking pre-orders on PC
+Shouldn't they?
-Pre-order bonuses
+Every game does this
-Particularly exploitive bonuses on PC
+t don't have a multiplayer mode, so why do you care?
-Polluting real life with building ads
+Oh, c'mon
-Bad commercials
+Action packed commercials to make the game sell. We all know what this game is? Don't we? So let them have such commercials. If a COD, Halo person buys this and understands this game, we all win.
-Slimey box art
+...
-Exclusive review
+I don't like this either but most of games have 9mbargos these days.
-Dumb collector's edition
+Its your opinion
-Treating people like children re: 1999 mode
+Its a very nice extra i think
-Bribe kits for the press
+Sorry to wake you up mate but every goddamn company does it. If a bribe kit bothers you so much, you should go research about the bribe trips as well.
-Taking pre-orders on DLC with barely any details available as to what it is (especially for non-enthusiasts)
+Valid.

My only complaint about the commercials are that they're using best of E3 accolades which are based off a preview build...but other companies do it too...it's a borderline shady tactic..

I do have to say I'm looking forward to this one, and it helps when I can get it from the MS store which at least will give me the points to buy the season pass.

I'm going to skyhook to infinity and beyond, yup.

I still have no idea how 1999 mode unlocks? Finish the game? Menu code? They should really clarify this.

From earlier parts of this thread, it sounds like it can be unlocked from the main menu, somehow.
