Putting the Ly into Polygon, Crecente: "Oh, that I saw"

Don't you guys think that Polygon wants you to keep talking about them, whether it be negative or positive. By responding to people on twitter and on GAF Polygon is able to maintain relevance. Its pretty much the same strategy B and C list celebrities employ when their fame is starting to wane.

I think I had like 4 posts total about it over 2 threads. Just my initial thoughts, I really don't care one way or another.

Gaf isn't a single entity. It's made up of thousands of individual posters. I had no issues with Polygon at all and was totally interested in it because the design seemed appealing.

They've earned the reputation that they have.

That documentary that got made about them building a video game website made it painfully obvious that they're completely full of themselves. On top of that they're hyperdefensive and react negatively to the tiniest of perceived slights. It's the perfect storm for internet pile-ons.

Yeah, this makes sense. That video rubbed me the wrong way, but their feature stories won me back (along with the nice design). Their reviews have always been something I read and take with a grain of salt on the actual score, Dead Space 3 a 9.5? Ehhhh.

The whole Sim City score change is something that does need discussed industry-wide as it's something we haven't really dealt with before. I'm not sure what the overall answer is, but it needs to be discussed. A lot of people are saying "they should have waited until it launched to review" but did anyone do this for games like Halo 4 or BF3, both games that had server issues (nowhere near SC, but still)? Where do you draw the line? Can you ever re-analyze your score?

It's almost like Polygon just has too many big personalities over there. Their feature stories are amazing, if they'd do a spin-off site with just those I'd read that only.
 
it's amazing just how much the documentary set the tone for the site going forwards. it seemed like it might just be a single hilariously misguided idea, but so much of they've done since has been in the same self-aggrandizing mold.

Yeah, this is a great example of how full of BS Polygon, and specifically Gies can be. The MP clearly impacts the SP especially in how the game is saved.

And given that he calls it an ACTION game it does seem to "deviate from the gameplay loop" considering it's supposed to be a horror franchise.

It reads more like something you'd find on the back of the game box, not a review.
 
Looking at the Alexa metric of the site it seems that it has a high bounce percentage but its reach is comparable to NeoGAF. It seems their "controversial" approach to reporting is working out for them, the brand name is out there.

Now they only need people to stay on their site for longer than it takes to read a headline and a score.

This is Gies' favorite tactic: Only He, Arthur Gies, Lord and Center of the Universe, is allowed to decide what other people's opinions actually are. He can't accept that people can disagree with him for legitimate reasons in good faith; they're all liars.

When Brad Shoemaker played ME3 for the first time a few months ago, Arthur was there to make sure that Brad knew that the only complaint people had with the game was that the "ending wasn't happy," and you are a liar if you say otherwise. When someone called him out for constantly erecting strawmen, his response was "What you call strawmen, I call getting to the root of the argument."


I'm nearly sure there have been other concrete examples of this exact same tactic; getting into an argument, shifting the argument, claiming that other people aren't smart or honest enough to realize what they're actually arguing for.

In all seriousness I often get the impression that GAF has just picked Polygon as their new whipping boy for the gaming press as a whole. I recognize that some of the staff has done and said stupid stuff, but since day one most people on GAF have been complaining about them and never gave the site a fair chance. Neither did I, but that has more to do with the site is organized and less and with the staff or the content they put out.

Edit: Well, shit! I guess Dead Cyclone is a long time Polygon sympathizer, but I still mean what I said.

There's also the fact that MSFT paid 750K for them to set this up and they don't think there's some conflict of interest. I think they should be banned for all the attemps to lie and deceive the gaming comunity.
