Holy Motors

I'm not sure if I understood what the film was trying to say, if it was trying to say anything. Watching the transformations of the main character was pretty crazy, kudos to the main actor, as he pulled it off very well.

Sorry for late reply, finally got some time on my hands!

21 Jump Street:

A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring.

Grown ass men who both looked like they were in their 30's managed to pass of as high school students and I don't even think anyone questioned them. That's what I meant by unrealistic.

The police sending these so called 'underachieving cops' who can't even recite the Miranda Rights into an obviously challenging undercover operation which seems to be quite important since it's to bring down a 'synthetic drug ring', with little to no training? That's what I meant by unrealistic.
and now that you've more explicitly defined what you though was unrealistic I'm far more comfortable calling your opinion thin and ridiculous.
yes, that's unrealistic in real life. in the film it's part of the joke. the fact that this program is even a thing is a joke in the film. it's self-critical. and you want the cops to be good cops? but...them being shit at their jobs is where jokes come from. it's a comedy. why the hell would you complain that they don't execute each arrest properly.
again I want to point out that I don't really care about 21js at all, but in general if you're watching a freaking action comedy and complaining that they aren't realistic cops, you're an awful viewer. it's akin to watching 2001aso and bitching that the movie would have been a lot better if the monolith had been controlled by a man in a silly helmet and there had been a ton more action sequences. or insisting that Close-Up would be a ton better with a random slapstick comedy scene (hm maybe it would be...). If your reaction to an action-comedy is "these cops are real, what a dumb movie" you're a bad viewer. you're refusing to meet a movie on its own terms. smart viewing is a give and take.
Bill Cunningham, New York 7/10 - an energetic and sweet look at a photographer whose life is devoted to his work. after watching it, i felt happy that this man exists, but then i realized that he probably doesn't. because of the director not wanting to upset the man, only about 2 minutes were spent on his life beyond his work, which made for a slightly shallow film.
I don't think that's an oversight on the part of the director, it's just the truth. or, the truth the doc wants you to believe: that BC has no life other than his work.

I watched it again recently, and everytime I watch it, I like it more. I'd say it's one of my favorite movies at this point.

I asked the same question to my friend about the BF stuff, and he said that the journey of the seaman was supposed to parallel the journey of Ozymandias, in that they both have "good intentions" that lead them to do terrible things.
Yeah, I've heard the same thing. It just seems a bit far-fetched, I suppose? I don't know :lol

Watched Duck Soup yesterday. My first foray into Marx brothers, and it was pretty good. Some jokes and gags fell flat for me, but the ones that hit, they elicited gut laughs. I preferred the stand up style straight up jokes to the gags. Probably going to check out other Marx bros. movies soon.

I watched it on the big screen. Kinda weird watching a movie with subtitles but the plot was pretty damn interesting that I didn't have second thoughts.

I really liked the movie and the action scenes were well composed. Felt 'Bourne' like.

^That looks pretty cool.

Also why would it be weird watching a movie with subtitles? It would have been way weirder if there weren't any.

Saw Cavalcade. It's definitely the best out of the last 4 Oscar winners I've seen. Not a great movie, but it has decent acting and one of those whole family life stories, though this was a bit unfocused. 5/10

Badlands. 9/10 First time seeing it. Wow what a directorial debut. Was that Terrance in a cameo?

I don't put it above The New World, or TTRL; or even Days of Heaven. It is up there though. I hate to put his films in order anyways so disregard.

If there is one singular director who I admire more than any other, it is Malick. He is really one of a kind. He made me look at films differently. Some of the most beautiful imagery ever put to film has been his doing.

It seems though that the stranger and more off the beaten path his movies gets the more I enjoy it. Im so lucky to be alive at this moment in time to enjoy his movies.

174) American Me 1992

Movie surrounds a man who who joins a gang early and follows his life throughout the movie. This movie was based on a true story, it really fascinating to me how people let themselves get into the life and are willing to basically give their life away to spend it in prison by their actions out

175) The Ice Storm 1997

Rewatch, To now and try and give my perspective for squirrel killer. I believe the movies intentions was to show teens going through what it was like when you and hitting puberty stride and the parents doing what lots of parents do aka cheating and lying to once another. the sex key party to me is something that just the straw that broke the camels back for their relationship. the boy randomly dying seemed like it was just a random event to draw emotion to close the movie.

176) A girl walks into a bar 2011

mfw, naked ping pong room and they censor bar every sexual region. fuck you. any who as to the movie itself, really does nothing, plot all over the place but never really clicks to a interesting angle

Wreck It Ralph Thought it was really cool film. All the stuff dealing with the arcade was very cool. Story was good, music was good. Worth a watch for anyone who likes animated films.

Was rewatching The Hobbit last night, god dam that first 10-15 is awful. Gandalf and old Bilbo are just awful to look at and look so old, they should have really done a better job touching them up. Their performances feel very flat as well in that little segment. Once the dinner party happens everything goes back to being great stuff.

it never really delved into his past, religious, or sexual activity.like i said, the director kept repeating "you don't have to answer..." when he asked about those parts of his life. he just wasn't interested in uncovering those aspects of his life, and it made for an lighter movie.

Yeah, unfortunately Gandalf was one the the worst things about the movie to me. McKellan's just too old at this point to pull it off.

It has been over a year since I've seen it so I'll give you that, however I don't know that delving into other aspects of Cunningham's life made it lighter, just more narrowly focused. which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I thought it worked. I get how someone would want a broader scope though

Doesn't the prologue take place years after Lord of the Rings? Either way, pretty sure Bilbo is supposed to look much older since his years with the Ring are catching up to him.

Schizopolis (1996)- Wow, that was one of the funniest movies I have seen since Airplane. I was laughing like once a minute or more. Steven Soderberg directs and stars in a very bizarre movie that pokes fun of Scientology (Eventualism in the movie) and self-help pseudo religious organizations. The movie jumps all over the place with it's characters, and at times it feels like some kind of weird fever dream. It's actually really hard to talk about because of how strange it all was. The soundtrack is phenomenal as well and matches the film to a tee. Anyway, I fucking loved this movie and feel bad I hadn't seen it till today. Cannot recommend this one enough to those who like rather smart humor.

Saw Marley and Me. There was a point when I started giving the movie a chance (despite my great dislike of Aniston), and started feeling something, but then things are overdone in crappy ways and the feeling was gone. It has some good, but unfortunately it also has just as much bad (if not a bit more). 4/10

The dog was lovely though.

Pfffffft that was probably like 40 different dogs. Since puppies grow so quickly they can only do a few scenes before they kill them and feed them intravenously to the new puppy.

Also as my 2 new followers know I'm making the switch over to Letterboxd. Because I really feel like manually transferring 1400 films like an asshole. THIS IS THE LAST TIME. I've pretty much exhausted the recommendations from criticker, and let's face it, shit is uggs. Lboxed has like, gradients and stuff. Also they seem to be a little more stat fettishy, which is the whole point.

Yeah, slow transition man, but I like the site more. I'm never doing it again, ever.

I just use both. And MUBI and ICM. Because I'm dumb. A lot of SXSW stuff I watched was only on Letterboxd, though. Guess that has something to do with the TMDB database or some shit.

Aliens is James Horner's best OST. there is some rehashing of wrath of khan, but as a whole it's better than that. And this is coming from a huuuge Braveheart ost fan.

21 Jump Street and Pineapple Express are the best american comedies in the last 10 or so years. The rest like hangover and bridesmaids and whatever lost their charm quickly imo.

Last night I saw Smashed with Mary Elizabeth Winstead. It was good to see her in something other than Scott Pilgrim as she's fairly easy on the eyes. I was really impressed with her performance. Good film too. 8/10

This I can wholeheartedly agree with.

man I just loved the cartoon feel of 21 Jump Street. also the way it just flipped the whole high school stereotype thing over it's head. and korean jesus. and ice cube.

that and magic mike made me like channing tatum. lately him and matthew mcconaghey have just completely turned around on me

I thought 21 Jump Street was aiiight. Better than most movies these days that are supposed to be comedies. Korean Jesus was the highlight for me for sure.

I thought that was Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol? Product placements everywhere, was actually distracting.

Fucking finally someone else has seen this masterpiece!

Titanic is Horner's best score by a country mile. And this is coming from a huge fan of Aliens.

Anyway, I just got back from Jack the Giant Slayer.

It was a decent amount of fun, without being great. It sure beats the shit out of Oz. Ewan McGregor and the other side characters were rather enjoyable. The lead they got to play Jack could have been much better, but was harmless. The environmental effects were pretty damn good. The Giant effects were kind of garbage.

It was basically your generic fantasy adventure done right. Nothing really original or unexpected, but everything was executed with a good deal of polish. Nothing felt lazy ala Oz. If you couldn't already tell, Oz lowering my expectations probably helped this film a bit. So it's fun enough, but it's certainly not the John Carter of March that I was hoping for.

Glad you dug it! Movie is super overlooked. Her performance is fantastic, but I have a slight problem with something in the third act.

Anyways, be on the look out for the director's next movie: THE SPECTACULAR NOW. It's great, huge step up. Comes out in August.

Any other films with Anna Karina you guys would recommend? How about next Goddard?

I'm actually not all that familiar with Godard's work, but I don't see why the next Godard wouldn't be a good next step. Anna Karina was in seven or so of his films, Vivre Sa Vie being next, so yeah, go for that one. The only other I've seen is Pierrot le Fou with both Karina and Belmondo (they're awesome together), and while I liked it, it wasn't nearly as good as A Woman is a Woman.

For a mesmerizing Anna Karina, go to Pierrot Le Fou.
Vivre Sa Vie is more dark in tone but she shines in the happy moments.

This movie is God-mode. I remember seeing it in theaters for the first time and I almost never stopped laughing the whole way through. Might've been the weed, but it's okay. The script is alright, too. There a number of points in the film where improvisation or last minute ideas made scenes much funnier - fueling the idea that comedic cinema demands such leniency.

Saw The Master on many critic #1 spots, so I thought I'd give it a try. As most people have said, the performances are great, but by the end I didn't really get much from the movie. I'm sure there is stuff about the movie I didn't immediately get, and would require a re-watch... but there probably isn't going to be one.

I loved how Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character
was supposed to be this prophet with all this knowledge, but the second someone questioned him about his work, his response was to start yelling.

For me, it's followed a similar path to comedic gold status as The Big Lebowski, in that I saw it the first time, thought it was kind of funny, but on subsequent views it has become funnier and funnier to me. I've probably seen it around 5 or 6 times now, and I consider it one of my favorite comedies, period.

Totally didn't realize that. That's awesome. I'm really excited for it because of Miles Teller. That kid is great in everything he's in.
