I've completely forgotten what the UI looks like. They had the standard character HP/MP bottom right, and the CTB bar covering the left side? Or was it to the right?

I'll imagine they'll keep it pretty much the same, but it would be nice to see some changes to it to make it look fancier. Either way though, having more space on the screen will make the battles look much nicer and less cramped.
While we can't be certain, probably.
It was the first PS2 game I ever played. As soon as I hear the opening piece of music (To Zanarkand I believe?), it's just gonna be a nostalgia overload.

I hope they do overhall the UI with high res character portrait, and a modern menu UI, but what are the chances we'll see that?

Playing this and the Kingdom Hearts HD Remix is going to take up a lot of my time...and new consoles. Gah, I've got to finish up my backlog before August 20th when Saints Row 4 comes out.
The game looks fantastic in comparison to the PS2 counterpart, which looked great in its day. I still don't like Tidus voice actor, but I am excited to play this game in HD glory. Never beat it the first time. I got stuck on Mt. Gagazette against Seymour and gave up.

I can assure you that that is what I meant. After all, the trailer even ended with a big text splash of "2013".

Why would you want that? That UI was never in vogue, it was characteristic to the game. Modernizing it would only make it less interesting, fitting and nostalgic.

FFX-2's UI is much, much prettier. Animated menus, animated start screen, better-looking battle menus, and so on.

I hope they redraw the font and UI, like they did for KH HD, I'm pretty sure they would.
I wouldn't mind a style like FFXIII/XIII-2 in all honesty.
It's fast, sleek and has hours and hours of content if you go searching for it (Datalog, Bestiary, etc.)
Imagine FFX/X-2 with proper datalogs.

I was a couple of years later, but I remember this as one of my first "I've moved out of home just going to play this all night and day" games.
Since I was PAL land I had me some dark aeons too. If anything makes me keener for x-2 (although I gave that a good bashing too). I can't imagine anything left in x for me to do.

I really don't care if they keep the UI the same. I don't think we are going to get any drastic redesign of the UI, I would figure they would do that only for a remake.

I've always actively avoided any PAL 50Hz to 60Hz comparisons. Didn't want to feel depressed at how inferior our copies were even if we did get the International content. It'll feel good playing the game in full speed.

I actually don't think the trophies will be insane, the current Final Fantasy trophies aren't hard just kind of grind.
