3DS Streetpass Experiences

There's a new Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon puzzle. 8 pink pieces.

I'll be going to a convention tomorrow so this is great timing.

Yesterday I couldn't Streetpass a friend even if we spent a good amount of time trying to. We tried resetting the systems but still no result, so I guess one of them must be faulty.

Did you disable wireless using the slider on the side of the 3DS?

Both wireless connections were on, but both of us still turned it off and then on to see if that was the problem. Nope. I've StreetPassed him over 80 times and never had the same problem before.

The lack of in-the-wild pink pieces for the vast majority of 3DS users is why Nintendo should be throwing us a bone and sending out special "have all the pink pieces" Spotpass carriers at least twice a year, if not more often.

I might make a thread for this since it's hopefully going to be a big deal, but StreetPass group from Plano/North Dallas, Ft. Worth and North Texas are doing a super MeetUp to celebrate 3DS anniversary. If you're in or around the area, try to come out. I believe we have ALL pink pieces covered from everything up until Luigi's Mansion.

Here is a Facebook page for the event.

If anybody from GAF is going to show up, let me know!

We generally have a lot of multiplayer gaming too and I think Luigi's Mansion is going to be blast there!

I also hate when you finally get a StreetPass from someone who actually bothers to do Puzzle Swap, and they have SO MANY pink pieces, and you can choose only one. Breaks my heart.

The system is fine as it is. It's supposed to be a social thing. Honestly, if I couldn't take advantage of StreetPass stuff by just carrying my 3DS around and organizing MeetUps, I would ignore it. The RPG and the Puzzle game are basically pointless without the aspect of siphoning data from friends and random people. I've never even used the coins systems for either (excepting for a few achievements).

I wonder if the whole pink pieces thing would have worked better if it was more like 33% of the puzzle was pink pieces but the first piece you always got was pink.

Having it at 20% and first piece is random just makes the initial propagation slow (if you don't start with one you need to pass someone with one...10 passes gives you a 90% chance, provided they've started the puzzle with their free piece and not passed anyone). Well after a puzzle has been out for a while a person who has a moderate amount of passes will have some but not all and thus the probability will increase far more because pink pieces are and should be the most propagated (if you see a pink piece, you grab it and the same goes for anyone you pass). This reminds me of the paradox of a Facebook user has x friends but the average Facebook friend has a lot more than x. So you will get pink pieces, just not able to complete puzzles :(

The whole concept is probably an artificial barrier to slow down Tokyo where you can get 200,000 streetpasses in 12 minutes being in Akihabara but it kind of ruins it for the rest of the world.

Speaking of which, does Europe have the Luigi puzzle? I'm sure we're missing the Fire Emblem and Brain Training ones...then to think in a few months is the animal crossing one...given how much is coming out next week those next 3 will all probably happen within 3 days of each other...

I read earlier in the thread that changing your hat helps to fix this bug.

Do you have to collect the puzzle pieces from all 10 people in order to clear the queue for a new set, or just greet them at the gate?

Your queue is reset as soon as you see the gate.

I'll be going to a convention tomorrow so this is great timing.

This is actually terrible timing as most convention goers aren't going to connect to SpotPass while away from home to get the new puzzle. I've passed about 200 people today and about 10 people had Luigi puzzle pieces.

If somebody shared out a hotspot with their phone or something and named it Starbucks or ATT, I think everyone's 3DSes automatically will eat some SpotPass off of it.

I don't know if that would work, but if it did, it would also kill the StreetPass in the area. I went to a convention in January at which the hotel had a Nintendo Zone... Let's just say it wasn't a very fun time at all for StreetPass. :(

What difference would that make? I run a StreetPass group in a store with Nintendo Zone every month and there are no issues.

I don't think think this'll be a problem since the majority of people who go to this are local, it's not like PAX where a lot of people fly in.

Hey, it's StreetPass North Texas' event! I'm friends with their admin. I hope the event goes well!

A lot of StreetPass groups are having anniversary meet ups right now! StreetPass Arizona is having one (well, two) as well, which we announced in our first StreetPass Direct video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjC8zdB86cs

What difference would that make? I run a StreetPass group in a store with Nintendo Zone every month and there are no issues.
The Nintendo 3DS can't use both StreetPass and SpotPass at the same time. If everyone's 3DS systems are connected to the Internet and downloading SpotPass data, StreetPass can't be used. While connected to a Nintendo Zone, the 3DS checks for SpotPass data periodically, which interferes with StreetPass. It's still possible to exchange StreetPass data, but the Nintendo Zone really slows it down. And if someone is downloading a lot of SpotPass data, like new videos in Nintendo Video, a bunch of Swapnotes, or even an old system update that they never got, they're going to be blocked from StreetPass for quite awhile. It depends on the range of the Nintendo Zone and all, but we've had mixed experiences with Nintendo Zones at StreetPass Arizona. Most of the time we'll get little to no StreetPass tags when in direct range of a Nintendo Zone. The convention in January was the worst. Normally at conventions we expect a few hundred or so StreetPass tags each day, and we had a lot of success at this same convention last year, but this year, because there was a Nintendo Zone, I only got about 100 or so StreetPass tags throughout the whole convention. This wasn't due to a lack of 3DS owners at the convention, because there were just as much as, if not more than, there were last year, and everyone was experiencing similar results.

Same. He texted me the other night about a job interview near where I lived and wanted to StreetPass me, haha.

I run StreetPassPlano/NorthDallas.

That makes sense but we have not had issues, our usual spot is next door to a Starbucks. Although I found a new spot today that is a mom and pop shop, so they would allow me to keep cards/ads there to bring in new members and the manager is willing to do other cool stuff for us. The downside is that the GameStop we go to now gives us so much free Nintendo stuff and now I want some of their Luigi hats, haha.

The system is fine as it is.

No, it's not.

It's supposed to be a social thing.

I carry it pretty much every time I go out now, since I'm always hankering for another few minutes of Fire Emblem. Once in a while get Streetpasses. Maybe once got a pink piece outside of a meetup, and the people at the meetup would not have had the pink pieces I'm missing without having gone to a convention. The system is terribly broken for anyone not in a major Streetpass area. To say it's fine is to ignore the great mass of the nation/world from personal experience and what's been posted in this thread.

Honestly, if I couldn't take advantage of StreetPass stuff by just carrying my 3DS around and organizing MeetUps, I would ignore it.

And that wouldn't make it any less broken. It just wouldn't affect you any.

the first piece you always got was pink.

The first piece you get should've always been pink. That's another major reason for its brokenness.

Yeah, it's very much Japan/concentrated population-centric in its design. NOA could compensate for that by sending out special characters with all the pink pieces multiple times a year, but they're so clueless, it's probably never even crossed their minds.

Edit:
I think there's a misunderstanding going on. I'm not saying that enough special all-pink-piece Spotpass characters should be sent out yearly to let everyone who stays at home be able to fill out the puzzles. I'm saying that a new injection of pink pieces via the special all-pink-piece Spotpass characters should be a regularly occurring thing. Otherwise, you get all the pieces available in your local area, and then stagnate. Conversely, there needs to be regular injections of fresh pink pieces either by making your first piece in a puzzle always a pink piece and/or putting out special Spotpass characters more often.

PAX East wrapped up a couple hours ago. Managed to pull the last of the 40 Luigi pieces while waiting in line for the closing events. Didn't think I'd get nearly that many given the puzzle came out mid-con. Of course, I had absolutely zero luck getting more Animal Crossing pieces T_T

Speak of the devil, LOL

Hi Shiggy!

I managed to complete Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 today. I need to attend more conventions for the 67 other pink pieces I need.

As far as conventions go, I haven't had any luck with developers' (not video games) conferences in getting a single StreetPass from them. Boring people! :P

Man every time I get to half of the pieces obtained, a new puzzle comes out :| I'm never gonna finish any of these, maybe when I'm done Secret Quest and am no longer OCD about spending coins to get hatz. Done it 5 times now and quite a few more times to go. x.x

FYI, it took me 10 runs through Streetpass Quest's secret quest alone just to get all the hats available there.

I have all the blue puzzle pieces, but have 74 pink pieces to get. Unfortunately you can't use owning multiple 3DSs to your advantage for pink pieces. And I reset my launch console about 20 times a couple of months ago in order to unlock all the puzzles for my XL. I didn't get a single pink piece in the process. I hope Miyamoto comes to the UK. :/

HOLY SHIT LOOOOL!!!

So Miyamoto comes to visit. I meet him up at the Plaza Gate, and this is how it goes:

Miyamoto: "Hi Luigi fans!"
DaBoss: "Do u eat poop???"
Me: *dies*

Every time a Special Mii arrives through SpotPass, me and my 3DS Meeting buddies get together on facebook to make sure each one of us picks a different piece.

That's how we've completed every puzzle.

I went to an Elton John concert the other night with my folks (in Montgomery, AL) and happened to have my 3DS in my pocket. A really nice girl who was super into Elton John for some reason was sitting next to me.

Later that night, after the show, I checked my 3DS to see that I had a StreetPass notification. Turns it it was hers. Out of 10,000 at the concert I happened to be sitting next to the only other one in the place with a 3DS.

Flawless.

Funnily enough, Miyamoto defeated the final boss of Find Mii for me! Sure was nice for him to show up at level 5.

I ended up getting a lot of achievements today, weirdly! 10th time meeting my local GameStop's demo unit, first Find Mii completion, first special Mii, and since I hadn't bothered checking Mii Plaza since February 28th I ended up accumulating 5 Miis at the gate. All male. Didn't even realize that was an achievement.

I just met Miyamoto, and because of my excitement I registered him to Mii maker and he was literally sent there. I sent him back to the Streetpass Plaza and he doesn't show his info anymore other than "sent by invitation." This sucks!

Weird, just checked my Mii Plaza and I have a ton of new people but never got the arriving animation for them. There's like 20+ new people I never met before in my Plaza and all say met 4 months ago. Anyone know where they are from? Before that I just had a few randoms I met at Siege and Atlanta and other friends.

They can be from you playing games online via SpotPass, which don't count as StreetPass arrivals and are there pretty much just to inflate your MiiPlaza.
