New 3DS update out

I have a 3DS XL, got it in late January and am using a 16GB SDHC card. I also went through the eShop to update the system. Had no errors and everything went fine.

Miiverse itself is web-based on the Wii U. They could make it a native app, but it is more likely to be web-based.

Maybe post more info about your 3DS's? Are they an XL? When did you purchase it? Where did you access the update from (eShop or system settings)? Are you using a stock SD card? And some other stuff that could be related.

I know it's browser-based on the Wii U, but I figured that Miiverse would be a native app (for better speeds) on the 3DS, like how the eShop is a native app on the 3DS but browser-based on the Wii U.
 
Updated just fine on my 3DS XL, took less than 5 minutes.

eShop does seem to be a lot snappier to navigate so far.

3DS XL. Purchased it at launch. Accessed update from eShop. Using a custom 16 GB SD card. Everything went through fine for me.
 
Browser's loading bar is a thin blue line on the top now. And it takes less time to fill; the browser seems faster.

I like this change.
 
I was randomly browsing the eShop and saw an option called 'Repair Software'. Has it always been there? Never noticed it before tbh.

Recently purchased and transferred to Mario Kart Blue XL. Purchased within the last 2 weeks (but presumably one of the holiday models).

Prompted for a system update via spotpass, updated at full battery without plugging into AC.
 
What these updates need is Wii U functionality, and not just in Miiverse. Your portable/home console divisions are unified, Nintendo, now lets see it in action!
 
Getting back into the 3DS game, I figured this would be the best thread to ask these questions in:

  1. How big are 3DS games? Is the 4GB card included with the XL enough for future DLC (Animal Crossing), as well?
  2. Is a screen protector necessary? I don't mind buying one if I have to. My Aqua Blue 3DS fell victim to screen scratching.
  3. Can I receive StreetPasses without being in sleep mode? I don't really remember receiving any while walking about and playing a game.

Also, is there a dedicated 3DS thread? I frequent the Vita one and it's one of my favorite threads on GAF.
 
I updated my XL without a hitch. In the future I'll wait a day before updating.

I should have known better, but I got LM2 today and wanted to put my free SML3D code into the eShop for it to download tonight.

I clicked and it did a short check on the software and then I got this message

"No problems have been detected. If you are experiencing problems with this software, you can initiate the repair process anyway. Doing so will redownload the softwares's data.

It seems to be like the Steam "Verify Game Cache" feature. Pretty neat actually and I didn't know it was there. Whats even great is that saves won't be deleted.

Go to the Game Details of a game you have downloaded and go to very bottom part.

  1. Most 3DS games are between 512MB-1GB. DLC size is usually neglible. You can always get a larger SD card in the future and copy stuff to it if you need to.
  2. I'd recommend a Hori screen protector. The touch screen can easily get scratched, and the XL still has a defect where you sometimes get a line on the top screen.
  3. StreetPass works while you're playing a game or doing something else on the 3DS. It doesn't need to be in sleep mode.
 
I have a blue 3DS XL with Mario Kart 7 installed from this past winter holiday and it updated to Ver. 5.0 just fine. Didn't get a error screen of any kind.

-I think the biggest one available for download right now is Monster Hunter at around 1.4GB, the biggest retail games are 4GB. Stock card should be okay, but I would get a bigger card if you plan on buying a lot of games from the eshop

-no top screen protector, screens don't scratch unless you put a lot of pressure on the unit.

-I don't think so, I never have.
 
My US 3DS Updated without any problems, but I don't want to risk doing it with my JP 3DS or else I'll be left with an expensive paperweight.

3DS games can be anywhere from tens of megabytes to (as of now) 4 GB. There are some 3DS games that are actually bigger than the SD card in the 2 GB in the 3DS, not sure about 3DS XL. I think I read Luigi's Mansion is bigger than the default SD card, though not sure 2 GB or 4 GB.

You can get StreetPasses without being in sleep mode. It's fun when you go to a Nintendo event and you are frantically filling up your 10 Mii Plaza StreetPasses, getting puzzle pieces, then seeing 10 more people waiting at your plaza gate, all without closing the 3DS.
 
eShop seems faster, specifically when loading a list of tiles. I think those used to load, anyone without the update wanna check? Go in the eShop, click on something that'll take you to a horizontal list of games. For me now, it goes to the list instantly. I swear I remember a loading spinner before they appeared before.

You can't access eShop without updating. :p

Only thing we could do a speed test on is the web browser.

8 GB cards actually are supported as well, but no one's actually gotten up there. Maybe with Smash Bros. 3DS.
 
Updated my launch Aqua Blue 3DS, no problems at all. I'm scared to update my Pikachu XL though, so I'll wait until Thursday to update it.

Ah, so they increased the size. As long as it isn't like when they introduced the 64 MB cartridges on the original DS. I think I might still waiting for Metroid Prime: Hunters to finish loading something... :p
 
Wow, thanks to everyone for the replies. Truth be told, I've never been to a major gaming convention in my life. Most StreetPasses I've gotten were at the Nintendo World Store, ha.

I think I'll upgrade the SD card real soon, the prices are a world of a difference compared to those for the Vita. $50 for 16GB, yikes.

Is it worth forking over the extra cash for a faster card? Is there any noticeable difference?
 
Updated before reading this thread and have no obvious problems with the system. No loss of data as far as I can tell.

I just bought a Class 10 SD card over the weekend and the installed apps show up faster (could be placebo) when turning the 3DS on and Monster Hunter saves faster (comparison videos on youtube prove it).

But really, even if the effects are minor - the 16GB C10 card was $24 AU which is cheap as so you might as well if you need a bigger one.

Yeah, so I assume it could be even cheaper here in the US. The only thing holding me back from going digital is how poorly the "account" system is. Are downloads linked with Club Nintendo at all? Say for example my system breaks or gets lost, how could I retrieve my downloads?
