Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | March 2013 | Carving an Independent niche

How do you know you're horrible at if it you didn't buy it? Just use the buttons not the touch screen.

I played the Steam version. I used Roger.. and brought his great name much shame... :(

EDIT: top of page recommendations
Persona 4 Golden $30
Virtua Tennis 4 $15
Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed $20

all currently on sale and good if you got the money for it :D
for every $50 spent on the PSN store, you get $10 back in April.. (offer ends March 31, 2013)

EDIT 2:
do I really want a Tennis game (that I am horrible at) for $15 when I just bought it at $3 on Steam? :/

Just snagged Just Cause 2, man this game is a blast so far. GTA + Batman grappling hook=Good times

Also enjoying Disgaea 3, this game alone makes the 3 month subscription worth it.

Oh god I completely forgot how these older RPG's work.

Follow story. Run to place. Bit more story with urgent need to get to somewhere. Head out to place you really need to get to. Random battles on world map. Get to tunnels. Fight through first few rooms easily enough. Next room monsters are way harder.....keep getting almost wiped out by normal mosters.....

Goes to google......

Im under leveled and a really useful character is not in my group that I could have got.

Im so used to being the right level just from playing the game as the story takes me, that I totally forgot how older RPG's work. Things like exploring all the areas you can despite having an urgent need (story wise) to go to your current target destination. Because I didn't do that I am massively under leveled and missing a helpful team member.

DAMN YOU MODERN HAND HOLDING.

well actually "damn you better game design" but it doesn't actually bother me. I can easily head back and go to those places. Just totally stumped me for an hour last night.

Im sure I will get back into the swing of things now I remember a bit better how it all works.

You don't really need Quina and you will get her eventually in Disc 2. Keep in mind that fewer characters results in more exp gained for each character per battle.

EDIT: Oh and do Chocobo Hot and Cold, it's time consuming but the equipment you get can be helpful later on.

how you feeling carnage heart?

I loved the PS1 version and was planning to grab when I get my spend 50 cash back

Yeah, it's pretty much Carnage Heart. You already know what that entails - lots of logic programming, spending time building up the routines of your OKE...story is the usual simple J-pap, inoffensive, and the actual meat of the game is deep and vast.

Recommended for niche gamers and CH fans. Everyone else, steer clear.

Personally, I can't play it at the end of the day when my brain is tired. It's just asking for too much sharp cerebral commitment during beleaguered nocturnal hours.

Random battles are actually the reason why I couldn't possibly pull myself to play again those amazing jrpgs from the psone era.

While I prefer not to have random battles Im not that bothered by them.

Its just a bit jarring remembering how thee games expect you to suddenly need to grind to be able to beat a boss or area. Especially when the story makes out that its urgent to get somewhere..... never mind all the people that will die, I wanna check out that chocobo farm lol.

While I assumed you dont NEED her, I thought while im grinding I may as well go and get her and have a look about the areas available to me. Need to go restock on potions and P_Downs thanks to those camp lizard things wiping out Vivi and monkey boy over and over again. Lance bird kept winning the fight for me but as a result she is now 2 levels higher than the other 2 lol.

So I've been going back and forth with buying FF9, whether I should do it or not because I've been worried about this whole 50/60Hz ordeal for us here in Europe. What's the low down on these with that? I'm guessing the FF games are running at 50Hz, but is it really that noticeable/horrible?

On the good side though your playing one of the best JRPGs ever made! :P

Runs OK. Slow down in some places. Feels like it might be 50hz yeah. Get used to it though.

My only gripes with it are the world map looks like crap and runs a bit slow and fights take to long to start (camera panning and loading for every fight).

Its a great game to have on while something is on the TV to entertain you during those bits.

HAHA I am enjoying it I have to say.

Quick question regarding the battle system.

The difference between active and wait?

Wait gives the impression that while you are selecting from the menu everyones timer should stop or at least no one should act until you are done. However the enemies still carry on attacking and my guys meters still rise.

What does active do differently then?

Hey guys was wondering how much will Soul Sacrifice cost? If its gonna cost 40$ then with PS Store 10% digital discount It will cost about 35$. Then I am having that much amount in my wallet now and can save it. Also How much is the digital version of Japanese SS? If not then I am eyeing that patapon bundle.

Also How can I farm for items and kaching in patapon? Replaying levels? I am stuck at a boss battle and I die very soon as I have too small army.

Alright, might bite the bullet then. Feels like such a shame, though.

Wait means that while you are in your menu monsters wont attack. Active means they will so picking your moves fast is better.

Im no expert on the matter but I kinda has that ever so slight slo-mo feel of the old 50hz games.

But I could be imagining it. Its only at times I notice it at all so it could just be random slow down im seeing. Hopefully someone else will be able to tell you.

I also tried the difference with filtering on and off and the slight blur definately helps in this game. With it off the jaggys really are pretty bad. I find a lot of the areas still look really nice with the filter on.

Its amazing that this resolution was perfectly fine back in the day. Maybe it comes off a lot cleaner on the old TV's. I cant remember at all to be honest.

Funny thing is I was also a PC gamer throughout my youth but happily played on my PSX as well.

mmm. So not really a huge difference.

I hate that you cant see the enemies move bar as I sware it just cheats and has goes despite you imputing your moves in first.

DOA5+ is up on the webstore. £35, so about £10 more than retail. :/

I think there might also be a demo, but it's labelled as 'full game' too. This seems to be a regular balls up on the EU store.

Well yeah, the games from that era were designed with the old CRT TVs in mind, so they probably looked waaaay better back then. There's probably a noticeable difference if you're actively looking for it... which I usually am when I know about it :(
Your words are calming my heart though.

Could somebody educate me on crossbuy? I'm not home right now and got a little hooked on the Vita Knytt demo, but on the description of the game it says that you can buy the PS3 version and get the Vita version for free. If I buy it now on Vita, will I still get it for PS3 when I get home?

Gah, I pre-ordered Sly 4 and it has been charged and appeared on my download list last night. Only problem is that it says I can't play it until the 28th, despite being out today. How very odd.

Been too long since I've played the original Patapon, but as far as I recall you can perpetually replay hunting and boss stages (and I presume bosses grow harder over time in the first?).

Almost undoubtedly $40, don't buy the JP version now that you've already waited this long. I'd highly recommend getting the Patapon bundle as well though. 2 is amazing.

My copy of Sly 4 has arrived today, can't wait to get started on it :) Plus I managed to score a cheapish copy of Hatsune Miku Project Diva off a friend. I've been after a copy for a while now.

Also, I finally managed to Platinum Ridge Racer on the Vita. I actually ended up enjoying it a great deal in the end especially trying to beat my own times on Harborline 765 and the online side of things. I'd still have preferred it to have more meat on the single player side of things along the lines on what the PSP Ridge Racer games had.

Guys you should totally give to generation of chaos a chance, youtube trailers and videos have a really bad quality, the ui and the lack of ingame documentation make it really difficult to understand at the beginning(but there is a free in-depth official guide on internet) and it has other faults, but it's a really complex strategy(rpg?) game with a lot of depth, an immense number of unique generals and troops types, lots of long campaigns and random campaign generator!
I like to think of it as a japanese answer to heroes of might & magic III.
For 2.99€(and even less with ps+) you can't miss it!

Bought Machinarium on whim...

Wow it looks SO nice on the OLED screen

i think this is going to be a great addition to my library, having a nice chance of pace to a slower more relaxing point and click. the ambient music is weirdly soothing and the game feels very dystopian

also enjoy that nothing is spelled out for you, you get your items in a bar at the top of the screen but no labels or descriptions as to what you need to do... fun to figure it out!

tons of control options too, you can move cursor with front touchpad, rear touchpad or left joystick

but i hate rear touchpad and wish you could disable it but i cant find the option! i like moving cursor with the joystick

so looking for another cheap impulse buy from PSN

was thinking about either rocketbirds or urban trial freestyle, any recs?

SS will probably cost $36, since all of Sony's retail first-party games so far have gotten a 10% discount IIRC ($36, $27).

Vita sold 40k last week in Japan! If it can stay between 30-40k a week from now on then hopefully we'll start getting more Japanese dev support.

Maybe that Sega soccer game that let everyone down will be a system seller lol.

I wanna try a Persona game (never played one before), which does GAF recommend? I saw 2 Persona 2 games in the store at different prices. It seems one is PS1 and the other PSP, but I don't know the difference.

Should I start with 1? Or is it more like Final Fantasy where the previous titles don't matter? In that case should I go with 4 which is native Vita, even though it costs more?

I'll bow to your wisdom on this GAF.

Machinarium fullscreen?
I dont think it would matter. I cant see me playing again.

Nuns attack
Dokuro
Pixeljunk monsters (PSP)
some good impulse stuff

Dokuro is terrible. Even though I only paid like $5 for it, I still regretted it. It's a your typical indie platformer/puzzle, but neither part is very good.

Persona 2 is two games, part 1 being Innocent Sin and part 2 being Eternal Punishment. The PSP version of EP was never brought over, the PS1 version of IS was never brought over :/

If you don't want to go 1->2->3->4 I'd just do P3 then P4. Bear in mind for P3 there's the PS2 version (FES) and the PSP version (P3P), both of which have their advantages.

Thanks. I'd be playing on Vita exclusively so I'm guessing I should get P3P and then 4. Is there any benefit to going from 1 to 4 in order. I'm fearing I'll burn out before getting to the really good stuff (I've read 1 is not as good as the others?).

I'd suggest going 3-4 and then watching a youtube video of some of 1 to see if you can go back to that.

1/2 have basically zero bearing on 3/4.

Happy that the Vita has had a relatively successful month in Japan. Hope they can keep it up. Maybe do another advertising run for Soul Sacrifice, which I think should be doing much better.

Depends who's on it ;)
Totobeni replying to a week old recording of himself. I'd tune in.

Totobeni replying to a week old recording of himself.

haha. no but im thinking a couple people could be routinely on it, with a rotating few people.

it can be seen as a audio month-in-review, what to look forward to next month, and we can touch upon certain topics people have discussed in that months thread. As people have noted before this thread moves incredibly fast - it could be just one more extra thing that makes it worthwhile and easy to follow.

if there are enough people interested maybe we can do a test run/ pilot.

This thread does move fast, but it has a nice consistency to it. I like seeing familiar posters when I visit a thread. It's also part of the reason why I usually stick to the niche OTs.

not sure if people saw Sully: A Very Serious RPG is coming to vita for 10$ this summer....

Will play that hunting stage again then. Not buying the JP version :p. It will depend on the game size though!

Thanks! Will buy depending on the game size. Managing 16gb has become a chore.

Can any Japanese Vita GAF confirm the size of digital version?

Everybody's Golf Masters, please listen.
I don't understand some of the challenges to get all the crowns.
Would you kindly explain them to me?
Thanks.

1-2 Hit a Rising Shot and Win.
What is a rising shot? Down+Up+perfect impact?

2-3 Apply Spin on every shot and Win.
Every single shot has to be hit with spin effect? Do I have to perfect impact?

3-2 Hit a Pin shot and Win.
I simply have to hit the flag and put the ball in the hole?

5-1 Perform a 1m near pin approach and Win.
So out from the green (not over 1m, I have to chip in and win?

6-1 Perform a 2m near pin approach and Win.
Same as above?

6-4 Perform a 3m near pin approach and Win.
Same as above?

6-5 Birdie or better the last hole and Win.
Ahah sounds hard!

Do you wanna know the hardest challeng 'till now (not beaten yet)?
This one to me:

Amateur Rank
2-1 Just Impact 50% or more and Win.

It sounds easy but I cannot stay over 40%. :(

Yeah the way Vita is treated at Japanese game stores is significantly different before & after the price cut. Red & blue Vita are always in shortage.
