Your RPG of the Year?

It's hard to decide, but I think I'd have to pick Tales of the Abyss. I haven't finished it yet but I'm about 50 hours in so I think I'm far enough to decide. Great characters (with quite a few hilarious parts that made me laugh out loud), engaging story and fun gameplay.

Though I also really enjoyed Xenosaga 3. KH2 was quite enjoyable as well. I haven't played FF12 yet so can't comment on that.

So far it's a toss up between FFXII, FFIII, and Xenosaga III. Right now I'd give the nod to Xeno 3, but I have only beaten FFIII out of the group of em.

I'd have to go with Xenosaga Episode 3 as well. I havent had a chance to play Silmeria yet, but I doubt it would take my #1 RPG of the year spot unless it was as good as the original VP.

Xenosaga 3 had some issues, enough to knock it out of my consideration for GOTY, but it was fun, and somehow managed to (mostly) wrap up the cluster **** of a story that had shown up in previous episodes.

Persona 3, Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria, Suikoden V or Tales of Destiny Remake. I can't really decide at the moment but all of those are pretty damn good.

I haven't finished ToDr but I already know the story and all of the stuff they changed is just too ****ing good. It makes Abyss and Legendia play like crap.

ToDR plays great in battles and the story's not too bad (given that it's Tales), but thus far I've found the dungeon design to be absolutely terrible. I'm up to
Moreau, I think; the feudal castle dungeon just after you get Johnny in your party
, and it's the first dungeon that's actually had any puzzles in and most of the game has just been running down block-tastic corridors.

Bear in mind I've never played ToD before so I don't know what's "improved" or not.

For RPG of the year it's a tough call for me. Like White Man said they've all had their ups and downs; gameplay wise Silmeria and ToDR are easily the best but neither have truly excellent stories, but the only one I've actually finished this year was Xenosaga III and I certainly wouldn't call it the best RPG of the year (surprisingly fun to play, but a complete mess plotwise by the end).

It's been a very good year RPG-quality wise though; when FFXII is the "worst" PS2 RPG I've played all year that's saying something.

As for the true worst, though, it's Enchanted Arms for me; I can't even call it "solid", it's just plain dull IMHO.

Valkyrie Profile Silmeria. Almost lived up to my expectations..

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team. What can I say.. Im just a sucker for Chunsoft's Roguelikes.

i easily put 160 hours into FFXII and i never got bored once. roughly 3x the playtime i ever had with FFX, or any other FF for that matter. the final boss music alone is worth the playthrough. so epic.

O_o
So you weren't laughing about one of the
most ridiculous and asinine FF "LOOK AT ME FINAL BOSS" bosses ever?
I dunno, I thought it was pretty funny.

Aye me too, could not stop laughing felt like WWF wrestler.

DQ8!! As a european it was the first of the serie I ever had the chance to play and it broke easily the 20 hours boredom limit a few RPG this year couldn't pass for me.

Please Square Soft!!! Milk us and give us loads of DQ remakes!

That dungeon is the first dungeon in the original ToD to have real puzzles as well. The later dungeons will have some more as well to keep in line with the original but ToD was never very puzzle intensive so don't expect too many crazy ones.

The story is great for a Tales game and I'd probably rank it as either second or third in the entire series considering it alone. If I take ToD2 into account, it probably would be number 1.

I'll make a thread sometime soon outlining what's changed and etc. It's a substantial improvment over the original ToD and most of the Tales games IMO.

:O
I forgot this was coming out. The original ToD was one of my favorites! I'll have to snag this post-haste!

Mother 3 and Suikoden V, for sure.

FFXII ended up as a huge dissapointment.
I agree. I haven't Played Suikoden V, but Mother 3 was great. FFXII was much of a dissapointment because I wasn't expecting much from it.

I liked FFX better than FFXII...is there something wrong with me?

I liked it better too. My problem is, I just haven't been able to get into FFXII yet. :( I am trying. Because I haven't, I've just been playing Tales of the Abyss and .Hack//G.U. instead lately.

Nope, I praise you for saying it!:)

Those people that said this year for RPG's was "disappointing" ... I know there's no way you'll play Episode III, but at least give Tales of the Abyss a shot?

And, if it wasn't obvious, my choice is:

Seconded!

Unless you loathe RPGs or something (considering this thread, I doubt it), there's no reason not to try it out.

ToA was nice. would take that, if I beated it, but i didnt.

Hmm, i guess I cant chose my favourite RPG this year, because I finished not a single rpg this year. hmm
FinalFantasy 12 is great, though

TotA totally sneaked under my radar. When the hell did this come out?!?!

Don't worry about those details -- just go buy it; the sooner you do, the better life becomes! :D (Oct 10th was the date, though)

I'll try it out eventually.

I find Tales of... games really hard to enjoy. I really hate the characters because they always represent an ancient anime archetype. Not to mention the art direction. I did enjoy Eternia and Symphonia, but almost strictly on a gameplay level.

I've already got a queue of stuff, but if I find a deal on it, snagg'd!

Oh man, I just want to say again how much TotA blew me away. I played it first before VP2 and FF12 since the latter two seemed to have received more hype and better reviews. But let's just say VP2 and FF12 were two of the biggest dissapointments ever for me, and TotA is the best or somewhere very close to the best RPG I've ever played.

If you at least enjoyed their gameplay, TotA will not disappoint you.

The characters are also a bit more original than what I've seen in the past games, IMO. Heck, Jade alone should make you want to keep playing :lol

All right. I'm convinced. I'll pick it up sometime early next year when I have some time off.

I've just been so burnt out on anime inspired JRPG lately... I pretty sure I've ignored at least a couple of decent ones.

Still playing through VP2, but BKII is still the best contender.

Goddamn all of you GAF for not giving this game a try.

It's on my backlog. I don't know much about it and I never played the original... will that hinder the experience?

Avalon said:

Well it won't hinder, but there's a bunch of cool cameos and foreshadowing in BKII... it all depends on how much you care about story. (I don't.) Because BKII is a FAR FAR FAR better "game" than BKI, though BKI's battle system needs to be revisited I think...

All right. I think I'll be just fine then.

Morrowind was certainly better than its sequel... but even so, I still had more fun with Oblivion than any other RPG this year. So I'll have to give it the nod.

Has to be FFXII. TotA was so great also, and I loved Suikoden V and XSIII. I thought it was an incredible year for RPG's overall.

Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra Best RPG
I have ever played and my 2006 GOTY

FFXII a close second so far. Cant wait to play Suikoden V, heard a lot of good things about it (and its story!)

Absolutely not, even though I like XII more than X.

Im 94 hours through XII mana, and gotta say, im loving it to bits. You're still playing through some solid RPGs (especially TotA from what I hear, will be playing my copy real soon), hope you enjoy FFXII too bro!

Btw, i finally got a tag :D Why am I konex the 3rd? Can I be the mother effin Xenosaga freak instead, pretty please?

FFXII is the only RPG I've played this year, it's not really an RPG but I haven't enjoyed one this much for years now. The whole system is just awesome.

Mother 3 would have certainly been my choice, but I can't read japanese, and since it'll never reach America, I'd better just forget it :(

Story is touching, tugs at the heart at times. Gameplay is a step back in all major categories.

Character and large scale ground combat battles are a big step back compared to part III and the navel battles really should of borrowed some featured from IV. Still very good.
