Your RPG of the Year?

So far it's probably FF5, unfortunately, but I have a feeling the real best RPG of the year is one I haven't played yet: NWN2.

Yeah, I'm just starting it. I didn't touch it before because the game was unplayable for me. Patch 1.3 seem to really take care of a lot of that.

FFXII loses definitive #1 because of the last 5 hours.
Define "last five hours". 'cause I have a rough idea where the game went to shit, but I'd say it's before then.

Top of the tower
. Though the story begins to have flaws from when the
Leviathon sinks.

Okay, yeah. I'd agree it started around when
you first meet up with Cid
and that the only really 'cool' plot point was that
Cid is Baltheir's father
.

Oblivion and Final Fantasy XII

Not comparable. Both are the best in their genre though (Western RPG and Jap RPG)

Xenosaga III so far for me with Tales of the Abyss as a close second.

I haven't played FF XII yet :´(

FF XII by a land slide. It's got its flaws, but it was awesome 70 hrs that I burned playing it almost nonstop. I rarely level up playing RPGs, but I did it in the game because it was fun!

Either FFXII or VP:S. I'll make a concrete decision once I finish FFXII.

I can't think of anything that even comes close to these two titles this year. I really want to try TotA though.

valkyrie profile 2, no contest. after that, i suppose it's tales of the abyss or uh did dds2 come out this year in the US? baiten kaitos origins was good too. i don't consider disgaea 2 an rpg, and nwn2 had way too many bugs.

I didn't play too many new RPGs this year, um FF3, Mother 3 and FFXII are about it I think.

I guess I'd have to give it to FF3 but only because I didn't finish Mother 3. Mother 3 was pretty awesome but the combat thing never clicked for me. Also it wasn't as easy to get into in Japanese as FFXII was for some reason.

FFXII well I think I've said more than enough about.

Those people that said this year for RPG's was "disappointing" ... I know there's no way you'll play Episode III, but at least give Tales of the Abyss a shot?

And, if it wasn't obvious, my choice is:

Talesoftheabyss_us.jpg

How is Suikoden V? Is it more like 1/2 or 3/4? How about Tactics?

I haven't played any RPG's this year. What I would like to play is Mother 3, FFXII, DQ8, and VP2:S. I'll get them some day...

I suppose it's gotta be FFXII. Too bad the game falls apart towards the end though. I really liked the first half or so.

And Oblivion.....well, I'll just say I was a little more than disappointed in that one. I was a HUGE Morrowind fan and much of the stuff that made Morrowind interesting for me wasn't in Oblivion.

VP2. But that's just because it had the best combat. I found the story and presentation kinda meh-y.

And that kinda sums up the year in RPGs. Nobody got it right 100%. Where there was nice gameplay, other elements were lacking, like in VP2; where gameplay was lacking, presentation was largely king, like in FF12. And where gameplay and presentation were bopth pretty adequate, there was gratuitous animu (ToA). And there was also a Xenosaga game released this year.

There were also other, even more mixed cases, like Metal Saga (that was this year, right?) and Devil Summoner.

Overall, there was a lot of interesting stuff, but no slam dunk king kong homeruns.

Its a coin flip between FFXII and Oblivion, they offered different experiences withing the genre, and i don't know wich i liked more for sure altought overall i experienced more new things in oblivion (probably because of the sandbox world)

Just out of interest: Has anyone stating "Oblivion" played Morrowind? (Or Daggerfall for that matter (most ahead-of-its-time and most buggy game ever))

Agreed.
But just because Suikoden V's loading times suck, especially for battles.

Damn, these Xenosaga III cultists are a bit creepy. They all keep saying, like, exactly the same thing -- makes you want to check the wires coming out of their brains.

Oblivion PC was probably my most played RPG of the year, and I probably had more fun with that than any other RPG. Alas, I can't really count it because I had to install like 2 dozen mods to make it playable. Bethesda needs to hire new designers.

I've been doing Elder Scrolls since Arena, and the series has always had some quirks. Like, I couldn't play Daggerfall for like 2 years after it came out. But while Oblivion doesn't take the crown from the Elder Scrolls bug king, it's certainly the first of the main Elder Scrolls games to have gameplay so fundamentally busted that you have to mod it to make it live up to the legacy of the previous games.

Please don't screw up Fallout!

Hit the nail on the head, VP:S is definitely my favorite RPG of the year, but the storyline was pretty weak, I felt it attempted too much fanservice and that's where it faltered... Plus, some of the more interesting elements of the first VP (the einherijar actually being fleshed out a little) were missing in this game. FF5 Advance is another, but I have played FF5 so many times before (it's my favorite FF) so I'm not sure if I'd count it.

I have yet to play TOTA, Oblivion (I doubt I'm gonna like it), Enchanted Arms, or really play FF12 beyond the first 2 hours.

I certainly hope you are not expecting a true successor....

I thought the story was excellent up until that very specific moment (You know what I'm talking about), after that not only did it destroy the ending but everything that could of been. Really a shame.

Tale of the abyss, with out question - though I think most of the rpgs I played this year were from last year or the mid 90's, lol. Chrono Trigger was sex by the way.

Persona 3, Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria, Suikoden V or Tales of Destiny Remake. I can't really decide at the moment but all of those are pretty damn good.

I haven't finished ToDr but I already know the story and all of the stuff they changed is just too ****ing good. It makes Abyss and Legendia play like crap.

A lot of nominations for Xenosaga: Ep III in here. Is it really THAT good?

The game has A LOT of flaws, but if you can manage to look past them it's actually quite enjoyable.
