Overpowered Characters in Fighting Games

Everyone who touches Street Fighter for the first time will tell you Dhalsim is cheap. You know, when jump-in sweep was your best combo.

I was almost certain Makoto was broken the first time I'd seen someone good use her. I mean, she just had to be. A full life bar would be there one moment, and then it would be round 2 all of a sudden.

Tekken 4 Jin

I can't think of a single tournament except a few that Tom Hilfiger's Nina won that didn't have the winner playing T4 Jin.

In the PS2 Garouden fighting game Hanma Yujiro from Grappler Baki is an unlockable character. He can attack during the characters intros, while the other player can't even move yet. :P

Cinder "Cheese", from Killer Instinct. I remember playing on xband, and he was considered ok as long as you didnt use his unlimited combo, for the most part though, because of the combo most didnt use him.

"Even Tager?"

Except Tager but as mentioned, tager gets pooped on by everyone. BUT, only if Nu plays perfectly. If Nu makes one mistake, Tager literally kills her after a combo and 1 trap/mixup.

Would also love to know what happened with "Oni". Last time I spent some time on the Shoryuken forum, he was considered low tier.

What changed?

Kappa

Seriously most of the characters posted in this thread aren't op at all, but i sometimes wonder how Sagat in SF IV got past Capcom.

Anyone remembers gaia and vermillion in the toshiden series lol

KOF 98 - King, Blue Mary

Not true at all

Vanilla Mary was upper mid.
EX King in 98UM was high but not top (Krauser 98UM is OP but not any worse than Sagat SF4 Vanilla), and even Krauser got nerfed in later 98UM revisions

If you want overpowered KOF chars

KOF94 Heidern
KOF96 Leona, Chin
KOF2k2 Choi, Athena
KOF 2k3 Duo Lon
KOFXI Gato , Kula (KOFXI's balance is as bad as 3S)

For SF

3S Yun/Chun
A1 Guy

I'm listing examples so bad they made me call those games garbage.

Most of the supposed overpowered characters in contemporary fighters listed in this topic are beatable.

MVC3 Phoenix - There's tactics in UMVC3 that can handle phoenix that wasn't known when MVC3 was out.
SSF4 Arcade Edition Yun: Fchamp had no good Yun experience, so of course he'll get mauled.
SF4 Sagat: Beatable, you just can't make mistakes or he capitalizes on it.

ST Akuma and Ivan Ooze are first to come to mind for real overpowered and brokenness.

Not overpowered, but when combined gives a ridiculously unfair advantage to one who uses it correctly: Morrigan/Doom in UMVC3

-A You block ? You're getting damage
-B You're trying to hit ? You're getting more damage

All the while the enemy is gaining meter

Hakumen? That beast bastard was unstoppable if played right.

He was low tier in BlazBlue CT. If he was super strong it'd prob. be in CS1.

Well off the top of my head:
CvSNK 1 Nakoruru
3S Chun, Yun and Kun (although there are some recent instances of such characters getting beaten by lower tier characters)
Pet Shop, Vanilla Ice in JoJo BA

A2 chun li and rose were fucked up. I never touched those 2 cos it felt like easy mode. Same for ken. Watching good Gens were a thing of beauty.

I remember loathing T Hawk quite a bit in SF4 :AE the last time i played it. His throws seemed to take priority over nearly everything. So yeah, fuck that guy. Ninja characters in DOA4 were pretty overpowered as well.

Karnov in Karnov's Revenge. He has a blockstring that is positive on block that also doubles as a starter for an infinite when it hits. His balloon move also has a ridiculous hitbox and invincibility so he can freely jump in at any point... to do that aforementioned blockstring. He's not a boss character -- he's an actual character you can pick from the get go.

Karnov WINS!

None of the boss characters in SF4 that you face in the story mode are playable. They can be unlocked through the PC version. But if they were playable then boss Evil Ryu would probably be the most broken SF character of all time. Just look at this

Let me just put it this way, you can't attack him, you can't runaway from him. This is like Bison vs Guile in the SF2 animated movie where kept spamming teleport and Guile couldn't do shit about it until he got KO'd from one blast. Instant normal/special cancels at will and as much as he wants. He will run circles around you and simply annoy to death with jabs if he wants. How do you beat him? Just throw out invincible moves and pray that you hit him at least 6-10 times while he's throwing out a normal. Miss just once and you're probably going to lose 40% of your health since he can do a lot of damage. Imagine Daigo playing this character lol.

The interesting part about vanilla SF4 Sagat is that while he obviously did way too much damage off of simple things, Seth is one character that has mostly been nerfed for every iteration of the game.

Imagine Poongko of today playing vanilla Seth.

Now that'd be broken.

I think Wild Iori and Wild Leona from KoF 97 were easily the top OP characters in fighting game history, along with O. Rugal from KoF 95. Clark and Ralf were consistently the more OP characters in the KoF series.

Playable Zankuro in Samurai Spirits IV was disgusting too.

stupid characters like these is what ruined Street Fighter,

What? Oni and Evil Ryu may look like over powered DBZ characters but they are actually weak characters in both AE and AE 2012. They're pretty low on tier list, have never won anything, and very unpopular among top players or even casual ones. I still run into loads of Ken and Ryu's, but hardly any Evil Ryu or Oni's for example. Hope my boy, Evil Ryu, gets some good buffs for AE 2013, he needs it.

Have you guys played KOF 95 Rugal? The damage and range of the genocide cutter were stupid.

Kyo and Iori were still better, but Rugal in 95 was top tier. Kyo had fairly easy TOD. Once you learn how to Guard Cancel in MAX Rugal becomes less broken.

Weird how V.Sagat never won any US majors tho', I think. Did he even top 8 at Evo ?
Well, the problem is that US Sagats were not at the japanese level, and when Mago and Bonchan started to travel, Sagat was already nerfed... ^^

There was a time where you had this guy in nearly all KoFXIII teams :
