Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) coming to NA retail/eShop Summer 2013 (July 16)

I wish the box art would have sucked more so I wouldn't feel so bad about digital.

Seriously, one of my favorite PS2 'series' is how good the spines look for Nocturne DDS1 and DDS2

There's been four games that I know of that use the 4GB card so far: RE:R, MGS3D, New Love Plus, and KH3D. I honestly don't know if SMT4 will, but the three of those games that did see release in the US were sold for $40.

I stand corrected. Thank you.

Guess it's hard to explain the price with the cart excuse.

Didn't this have some sort of retailer exclusive pre-order costume stuff in Japan? It's probably still too early but I just noticed that the CD that comes with Soul Hackers seems to be a preorder thing for EBgames and Amazon unlike the EOIV stuff.

As excited as I was to see this news, pricing it at $50 is a bitch move of Square-Enix sized proportions. This gets a pass from me unless the price goes down. Sorry Atlus.

I'm going to continue to hold my breath, severely, until I find out that the Cu Chulainn helmet isn't exclusive with the Lawson costume.

Just when I was starting to get really excited about Soul Hackers - SMTIV has to come along and steal its thunder!?! Damn you SMTIV!

This whole announcement has still taken me by surprise and I haven't really processed it yet. I've been intentionally trying to stay away from a lot of SMTIV info because I didn't want to get excited prematurely and figured there was no way in Hell it would be coming west until the end of the year at the earliest. So its hard for me to get hyped for both Soul Hackers and SMTIV at the same time.
I'll be getting them both.

I got totally burned on the uber-cheap Soul Hackers accessory pack, but the SMT IV one looks pretty nifty. I might reconsider.

No, I just posted that in here from the source instead of Siliconera. What's with people making new threads for every little thing, no wonder I can't follow anything around here XD

A new thread for Japan-exclusive goodies would be awfully out of character :p

Anywho, I threw down on Amazon for 50 bucks. Handheld or not, I don't care. There are certain games/series that I'm always willing to throw down for day 1 no matter what, and this here is one of them. There are a couple of series that I'd dish out 70 - 80 to play day 1 if I had to.

Aren't the Devil Children/Demikids games also SMT branded in Japan?

They were in America too.

xbox 360 and PS3 games cost 60 dollars with online/season passes and nickle and dime dlc.....but 50 dollars for a brand new authentic mainline smt game is too much?

I mean if this same game came out on the PS2 nobody would be complaining about a 50 dollar price point.

Would you complain if it was released on cell phones for $50?

Incidentally, the first run of SMT:N cost $60, so this being priced $10 more than other games isn't without precedent!

I think it's a combination of two factors myself:

-a speedy quality localization
-Atlus having a fanbase that by and large wouldn't have the same hangups about paying a premium for a game like this that people would have with a more mainstream franchise like Resident Evil

I have no doubt that the first run is going to be bundled with a couple of items; a soundtrack is practically guaranteed, and I'm sure there will be at least another item to go with it. Atlus is a smart company, and I think they know that the $50 price tag isn't going to be a universally popular decision unless they justify the value with more physical goods, or even throwing in whatever DLC Japan is offering for pre-orders.

If I gave a shit about cell phone gaming - no, this isn't some old PS1 port, port of a snes title with "updated" flash visuals, gameloft dreck, angry birds ripoff....etc etc etc.

The mainline SMT games are some of the highest quality jrpgs. The spinoffs are good at best, but the main games are top tier.

i've been waiting a decade for a game like smtn, and nothing, including the spinoffs have filled that void.

I love Strange Journey, but it's definitely not the game that many SMT3 lovers were looking for.

Hell, even 4 doesn't scratch a part of the Noctrune itch, I can't believe that Nocturne sill has the best graphics of any Megaten, except maybe digital devil saga.

Is it because of the first person grid based stuff, or the low production quality? Because you were just going on about how high quality the mainline games are and all of them except Nocturne are like that.

You have to keep in mind that SMT3 is the only one many people have been exposed to.

For me, I was ecstatic to see a return of first-person SMT, but I've been with the series since MT2. I actually liked SMT3 less than SMT2 when I first played it, and didn't really gain a deep appreciation for until I played the Maniax version which added the Amala Labyrinth which is a total homage to classic SMT. But other than that, SMT3 is actually a fairly large departure from the rest of the series, so it isn't surprising that anything that is more like the other games will be less appealing to new fans.

Then I'm calling shenanigans on his mainline series praise

Still better than those held hostage by P3/P4 being "the real Megaten experience" and who can't understand why people would like much less prefer a game like SJ or even Persona 2.

i love me some first person grid based dungeon crawling

The gameplay quality wasn't nearly as high, and unlike nocturne it stopped being fun halfway through.

and yes, production values matter. Nocturne is perhaps the most atmospheric rpg I have ever played. I was sucked into a gorgeous but melancholy world similar to ours but still very different. The music was beautiful and haunting. It was bizarre but made sense in a way.

the mainline games might not be carbon copies of one another but they are all high quality. I just thought smtn was the highest quality of them all.

SMT3 is like the DQ8 of the series. It's definitely got higher production values than everything else, and it's also unlikely for new ones to get that much attention or care (although the reason in each case is different). In the case of SMT, it just isn't the main focus anymore because it isn't going to sell as much as Persona will.

though it is my favorite DQ, 8 wasn't my first and I hold the far less pretty DQV as being almost as good as 8.

Except SMT3 is a really fun fast-paced game filled with clever dungeons while playing DQ8 and its slow "realistically styled" exploration and over-animated battles is a chore.

I was only referring to the level of production values in each game, which I thought I made pretty clear in my post. Anything else you want to read from that was not intended.

She means in terms of fan perception.

It's a good analogy but I'd actually peg Persona 3 as the DQ VIII of the series which is even more worrying for fans of the mainline game as they are not the same series!

Do these people actually exist? I assumed that the majority of people who have played P3/P4 are just completely oblivious to Megatennists

Not really, no. I've practically never seen these people. What I have seen is people making assumptions, and arguments break out from that.

I'm not sure I understand the feud, and I'm sorry if this post escalates into something - but what's the big deal? I like the Persona games, they're fun. Is the problem that they're popular, and SMT mainline isn't? Is the problem that SMT mainline is more popular now than it's ever been, because of Persona? The whole MT brand is comprised of games which barely resemble one another anyway. If someone prefers Persona to SMT, what does it matter?

That is not true.

EDIT: By that I mean:

Code:
4	PS2	2003-02-20	1446	Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne	Atlus	7800	245,520
8	DS	2009-10-08	3731	Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey	Atlus	6279	136,149

The situation is kinda like when you hear someone saying that they looooooove X artist only because they've heard his/her singles, while you know the artist's entire discography.
