I think it's the "maid" look which is "in" in Japan (or at least Tokyo from my experience) and has been for some time. I don't know the meaning behind it, but I'm pretty sure that's part of Marie's popularity in Japan.

Unfortunately though Scythana shot up in my rankings I just don't see her having the appeal to win either votes, but I like imagining a tag team partner team of Beowulf and her with Beowulf on point. I like the idea of her coming in and flinging him and his chair around once he's KOed.
A lot of it I think, stems from Peacock's story mode. I think someone observed this in the IndieGogo thread, but there's an inordinate amount of fanart that's come out of Japan featuring Peacock and Marie. It seems they really liked Peacock's story mode!
Needed to purge my history. Just too much for me.

I didn't think she would make it past the first round of voting and yet here she is. She looks cool, especially unique compared to others in the cast, and the video showing off her mechanics definitely helped. We might get lucky and we'll get to the next round!

Maybe, but AFAIK Mike was into competitive SF for a long time and must have worked hard to make sure the game would be up to that crowd's standards (I found about the game through shoryuken.com, for all I knew then it was the only place where it was heavily promoted long before release) - so seeing poll results that point away from that environment makes me wonder if he feels some of the mechanics' subtleties go unnapreciated.
