EDGE: "Meet NeoGAF, the hardcore community shaping the games media agenda"

Amazing/awesome a 7 figure sum was offered for it and it was rejected. I wonder whether the site would hold it's popularity/charm if say IGN owned it.

IGN's forum used to be the biggest forum (or second?) in the world before they drove everyone away with their awful redesign/overhaul shit. Please no. There's a reason most of the long-time members left and came here.

If a website is pushing an exclusive review of the next hyped triple-A game, it’s likely that those involved managed to pander to the game’s publisher harder than everyone else did, and that is usually reflected in the tone of the review.”

However much one might disagree with this – and we do in the strongest possible terms – there’s no dispute over the fact that these views are out there, and they are dominant on NeoGAF.

Oh, get the fuck out of here, Edge. That was a perfect time for you to play the role of 'journalist' and tell us why you disagree. Instead of a fluff piece, go deeper. Jesus, has anybody in games 'journalism' gone to a legitimate journalism school and not just took some online courses or some shit?

I'm right there with you regarding corporate ownership. There's a reason I haven't taken the $5 mill, and it's not because I want to wait until I can moon Justin Bieber from my own Veyron ;b

He's like 13, you pervert.

That's all GAF needs. The notoriety of being run by a registered sex offender.

They would probably make it an open forum or integrate it with the existing IGN forums, either case, not good.

Cliffy B for making fun of Sweet Billy on twitter.

For now, we'll give Edge time to apologize for this article.

Cliffy B already doesn't have a job. So if you fire somebody from unemployment, is that the same thing as hiring them? Because I don't want Cliffy to work for NeoGAF.

I don't always agree with popular opinion on GAF (though such a thing really doesn't exist in the larger scheme because there's like a billion of us, it just appears that way)... and I'm constantly having to remind myself that GAF (by design) generally caters to a certain population of all people in the world who play videogames... but holy macaroni has Edge ever missed the point on this one. Power to the people and all that.

What that article got right is that this forum can and has been influential and that lots of gaming industry folks, including press, read it. Doy. No argument from me there.

But by beginning the article with "Orth's apparent departure from Microsoft...might just be NeoGAF's defining moment" directly states (even with weasely hedge words like "might just be") that, somehow, GAF bears some responsibility. This is what annoys me. The reality here is that he was probably doomed from the moment he tweeted, regardless of whether NeoGAF picked it up or not. A tweet does not necessarily have to "go viral" to cause an internal company shitstorm. Believe me. All it takes is one pissed off exec to see it to doom you. Did GAF help spread the story and make more folks aware of the tweets? Of course. Has GAF made news out of meltdowns within the forum itself, like Jeff Bell. Yes.

But to begin the article, and then expand on it thruout, with the notion (whether implied or not) that this forum LED to the dismissal is simplistic at best. With all due respect to the obvious power that this community DOES have, this was not "NeoGAF's defining moment." I personally have nothing against the guy and feel for what happened to him (especially as someone who's stuck his own foot in his mouth on Twitter, more than once.) But if this was anyone's "defining moment," it was his.

In the end, I guess I'm saying, as a former editor, that if it was my job, I'd have written a piece on the undeniable influence of this place, without taking the extra, ridiculous step of saying it cost a man his job. That was all on one person and one person alone.
This post right here. SO good.

NeoGAF exists as it is because it isn't owned by a corporate overlord.

If it were sold for profit, it wouldn't be NeoGAF any more, it'd be NeoGAF's corpse. Just like the bodies in the morgue, they aren't the people who used to inhabit them...

Kind of ridiculous to blame us for costing the guy his job. It's like blaming the media for Nixon's resignation.

Still, nice to see some coverage.

Hello mr or mrs NeoGaf
Didn't know it was a person, we need a mascot know, make it Bubsy please

"Budsy sequel gets made due to neo gaf"

We did it B^)

We getting big lol

Is Edge really blaming NeoGAF for this Orth debacle?

Yeah I got that vibe, and I don't agree with it. That guy hung himself, GAF is not responsible.

Maaaaan, fuck that, Evilore, I would have taken that money
KuGsj.gif

Indeed, I would have sold you all out without a doubt. Wouldn't have even requested to stay on as an admin to guide the growth of the site. I would have just sold wholesale, moved to Vegas, burned it all by 55 and worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart until a coronary took me.

I cant believe I once pay for those messageboards.

They had a few pay-exclusives like the Zelda history writeup by Peer around Celda debut. You could also directly ask questions of the IGN Editors on a special forum, if you were a pay member. That was a decade ago, though. Not sure there's a point nowadays.

I can see it now...

"Millionaire EviLore asking for $829 from Kickstarter to send 9-year old Gaffer to Game Journalism Camp to prove male GAME JOURNALISTS wrong!"

Haha. That was a good read. And it was a pleasure seeing the face to the owner of this wonderful place.

This site is still my very favorite to browse everyday. I was sucked in by how amazing you guys are to quickly find every breaking or leaked info that goes on in the industry, and for the love of those GIFs! *Points to own user name*

I will always Believe in GAF.

Yep, that's what I love about GAF. It's not just the "influence" it's the fact that there isn't a better site in the world to hear about every piece of gaming news/rumors the moment it happens.

I also boggle at the notion of NeoGAF as basically this outrageously bloodthirsty Anon-like 4chan analogue that finds targets and lynches them, but what can ya do. That's a typical characterization from casual observers, though.

I think what's kind of scary is that some of the "casual observers" are, sometimes, notable people in the industry, who then like to take to whatever social platform of their choosing (namely Twitter) and then post a knee-jerk generalization. It's then fueled by people championing and it becomes the very thing they get mad at GAF for instigating in the first place.

Of course he said no to 7 million figure. He is going to Manchester next later this year to reunite with his mate Shinji.

Its all part of the plan!

GAF as a "lawless playground"...what.

Let the new members come. Let moderation get stricter and stricter. It's what makes this community strong.

I don't agree with Edge's characterization of NeoGAF's involvement whatsoever, but that's their prerogative. I think we can probably agree that the story of Orth's Twitter comments broke here and was picked up by the major news outlets as a result, and that there was a universal outcry on NeoGAF about those Twitter comments which painted Microsoft (via the person representing it) in an unfavorable light, but that's a bit different than "NeoGAF got Orth fired."

Well we do like a good pile-on sometimes (we'll never turn down an opportunity to pounce on Gies) but that's only because someone put themselves in a position to be piled on in the first place.

However Edge makes it seem like we bugged the guy's office and listened in to his private conversations and leaked them when he was just having a public twitter meltdown. If shinobi didn't post it then 10 minutes later someone on Reddit would have, and I'm sure the media would be calling them out for it just like us.....:lol

I was a member as DeeCowboys long time ago.

I may be a Junior now. This is the beggining of attempted infiltration to try and steer Neogaf "in the right direction".

Watch out Evil.

On a more serious note, I really don't like how this site has taken over my life without any benefit anymore. i used to have my own group community, but now I don't and I just feel I don't get much from Gaf unless its some gaming news news.

I just wish The Japanese Music thread was more active :/

That’s putting it lightly. Previous ‘tangible results’ of NeoGAF’s hivemind in action are legion, but Malka describes the 2007 incident involving Jeff Bell as NeoGAF’s watershed moment. Bell sent a private message to NeoGAF user a Master Ninja, responding to his criticisms with the legend: “And your contribution to society is…what?”

. . .
