EDGE: "Meet NeoGAF, the hardcore community shaping the games media agenda"

Wasn't redit at least partially responsible for that dude getting sacked? Also neogafs morals>every other website.

Neither Reddit nor GAF were responsible in anyway for the man getting fired.

At all.

He did it to himself. No one forced him to say anything.

Why does Gaf get singled out? We're not even that strict. If Gfaqs had the same registration/ban system they'd be far, far, far worse. At least here I'm treated like an adult.

hivemind? Have you seen other forums? /v/ is a hivemind but far, far more hostile. r/gaming is a hivemind too.

Devs post here? Not many. Reddit has developers and other famous people posting there all the time. What makes neogaf so special?

We've always been a community of gamers with a diverse set of opinions. Why is this so difficult for these people to understand? Why are we labeled as a hivemind?

Because we are a hivemind. And I dont think its a bad thing.

Sometimes you get that creepy and vengeful, internet lynch-mob thing going on, but most of the time it's just passionate dudes who are really excited to contribute to the best videogame news website out there.

I don't understand the idea to want someone you've never met personally be fired, solely because you disgaree with his/her ideaologies.

Once you start to wish for someone whose employed in the game industry - or any industry - to get fired, you may take your gaming hobby a bit too seriously.

Interesting I didn't know Tyler took over the site I thought he started it. Whats the story on that? Did you buy it from the previous owner?

Cliff jumping looks like fun.:D
What collective ego? Can get them fired? Should we all meet up at the Hall of Doom and get more people fired? Bring an evil cape, Evilore!

No we aren't.

Maybe threads develop a narrative that is more commonly accepted than others but there is no one GAF.

Just right now there are several BioShock Infinite threads ongoing. They range from very positive (spoiler thread) to positive (regulat OT) to negative (Idle Thumbs discussion thread).

If there was a hivemind that scenario above wouldn't work under the colloquial definition of "hivemind."

You know if Orth got into an argument on Twitter with a fellow GAFer, then I could see that argument having some weight, but as it is - all we did was report the facts.

I like CliffyB, but he just says some straight-up stupid stuff from time to time. Some of his views on the industry are very poisonous. Skimming over that post he makes some really dumb points. That someone was right in saying that the Wii was a virus. I guess it was a virus in the sense that it spread to Microsoft and gave them a huge boost in sales with Kinect.

But what is worse is the defending of always online. I have never read a sound argument on that. But then he lets loose this gem:

I would bet money that without the always online elements of Diablo 3 that it would have sold half of that.

Seriously? I am going to go out on a limb and that say a large chunk of the sales were from the Diablo name, and the kind of game that entails, on its own. But wasn't one of the main reasons for always online the auction house? Something that the former director admitted hurt the game? Maybe it got a boost in sales because of misguided gamers trying to become millionaires.

As far as Adam Orth and whatever happened to him, that isn't our fault. Nobody forced him to say those things. He could have responded tactfully or not at all. Instead, he made the power and vacuum comments. I thought what he said was incredibly stupid, and not at all like what someone should be saying to try to comfort or persuade people about always online (something that I have seen no one from the industry actually do). He shouldn't have been fired or had to resign over that. In a month people will probably forget this whole incident for the most part anyway.

If we are a hive mind we're a schizophrenic one that rarely agrees on anything. Also most of dem haters either members or banned...

What did GAF do to earn such ire from all sides of the media?

Because GAF can't be controlled by them? We have our own set of agenda and more often than not, those agenda clash with that of the media (and they company that backs them up). The internet gave platform to the voice of the consumers and the big corporations didn't like it. But GAF basically amplifies those voices to the point that it starts to have some effects, as small as it may be, on those companies and the perception that the public has on them.

I'm insulted at the snub of OT! OT is just as breaking with news stories as the gaming side is with gaming related news!

OT represent!

I love the OT but let's face it, we don't really want the press to know about the presence of say, PonyGAF.
J/K!

I think you totally misinterpreted what he meant.

Mike Capps said something stupid that he regretted later, but that wasn't reason for him to get fired was his point. He's saying that good, talented people make honest mistakes.

EL and the team have done a great job making this the best place to talk about games on the net. Should being back the Miyamoto Musashi avi, though.

Why do you even care what CliffyB thinks? Who cares?

I'd be more annoyed with his ramblings if I actually gave a shit.

It's hard not to care about what Cliffy say's when he's partially responsible for one the greatest multiplayer third person shooters (gears of war).

If it was some no-name developer that never made anything of any worth it would be much easier to ignore.

But it's not, so it's easy to flip out at the stupid shit he says.

While I agree with the article, one of the reasons I stay on GAF (since 2006 I think) is the integrity.
Plain and simple, while we have our threads that tend to veer into the obscured, for all intents and purposes, the community does a lot of good in the realm of reviewing and providing a niche market of gaming information and insight.

But, that's every forum. /v/ does it to even more extremes. Gamefaqs does it too. Reddit as well.

Absolutely, where else could I bring up a game that came out in 1986 and have a forty page discussion on it? The passion that people have for games on this site, is simply unrivaled.

We may not always agree, but I value nearly everyone's opinion on here.

Bingo!
Where else can I find people that know my sn without having to google it?
When it comes to gaming, gaf is ace

I did not misinterpret that part, and I even agree with him on that. They shouldn't be fired over something stupid they said. But what I was responding to was this:

(P.S. Mike Capps was right…the Wii was a virus after all.)

I should have quoted that to begin with, my bad.

I must be dumb because I don't understand Cliffy's point about always online. Using Netflix, Twitter, Facebook and Reddit all require the internet by design. I only worry about whether the new Xbox (or any device) will insist on being connected online to function at all.

If all it means by being "always online" is the same as it is with a PC, 360 and PS3 ect currently are, why is there even a debate?

EviLore you fool!

You could have sold GAF, watched as the inevitable changes caused a backlash, and started a new site. "From the mind of EviLore, the previous owner of NeoGAF, comes a new groundbreaking discussion forum: NewGAPH - Be Credulous."

I'm terrible at shaping stuff, but I always try.

You know I'm no legal expert... But I would say they are probably going to make him sign something preventing him from something like that. :p

That's not what it means.

People are trying to force a semantic argument even though it was explicitly stated in the penultimate rumors that a internet connection is require to operate and it wouldn't let you continue to use it when it as disconnected from the internet.

It comes down to "oh GAF, you so silly. You don't understand what it means." - "Thank you, Professor."

To sum up:

PS4 is always online. Will update and download stuff even when basically turned off.
720 used to be rumored (there is a new rumor that this isn't the case) that an internet connection is required to do anything (but network troubleshooting) on the device. Will probably do everything the PS4 does w.r.t. updating and downloading.

A while back, the front page of Neogaf had what looked like "articles", very few of them (just one?). I vaguely remember something about someone's account of a Resistance tournament (and the trip that surrounded it).

Questions..
a)
Am I crazy? Does someone else remember that?

b)Wasn't the author of the article Evilore actually?

I should start a podcast. That way people can disseminate my vapid hyper-ego bluster to the far reaches of the internet with minimal personal effort. It'll be even better than having an unemployed blog!

Adam Orth’s apparent departure from Microsoft last night might just be NeoGAF’s defining moment, for better or worse.

Hello, NeoGAF!

I've been reading this forum for years and I've never posted before but this article really annoyed me so I thought that I'd write a little something. The idea that the whole Orth thing (or Jeff Bell, or Dyack) defines what NeoGAF is just baffles me. Here are some less sexy moments that define what GAF is for me:

  • GAF introduced my to GFW Radio, which led me to buy my first ever gaming PC at the age of 28 - which was coincidentally ordered the day before Jeff Green left and arrived the day after Shawn left!

  • GAF introduced me to Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, an astounding flawed gem which I adored and would never have heard of without this forum.

  • GAF introduced me to Idle Thumbs which (as a former academic and old man) lets me listen in on the kind of wizardly discourse that all my real life friends are to grown up for.

  • GAF helped me quit smoking after ten years because there's a thread on e-cigs in the off topic!

When I recently heard that Margret Thatcher had died the first thing I did (don't judge me) was google "Margret Thatcher Neogaf" because I knew that it was a quick way to get up to date and find a variety of opinions and links.

Also, "Blamespace or Timedog" was pretty funny yo.

So yeah, NeoGAF sure has its moments.

You should become a regular on the Bonus Round, just so you can disagree with everything Pachter says.

Every podcast you should wear a T-Shirt that says "I post a new thread about the first date on the first date". If such a T-Shirt doesn't exist, go to kickstarter.
