EDGE: "Meet NeoGAF, the hardcore community shaping the games media agenda"

When I recently heard that Margret Thatcher had died the first thing I did (don't judge me) was google "Margret Thatcher Neogaf" because I knew that it was a quick way to get up to date and find a variety of opinions and links.

GAF got Margaret Thatcher fired from her PM position.

[*]GAF helped me quit smoking after ten years because there's a thread on e-cigs in the off topic!

Rock on, man. I started smoking when I was 16, 27 now. I bought an e-cig last summer, but picked up smoking after a few months. I've been trying to quit again since last month and I'm hopeful this time. My mindset is in a better place.

*takes a drag of his e-cig*

I should start a podcast. That way people can disseminate my vapid hyper-ego bluster to the far reaches of the internet with minimal personal effort. It'll be even better than having an unemployed blog!

Hello, NeoGAF!

I've been reading this forum for years and I've never posted before but this article really annoyed me so I thought that I'd write a little something. The idea that the whole Orth thing (or Jeff Bell, or Dyack) defines what NeoGAF is just baffles me. Here are some less sexy moments that define what GAF is for me:

  • GAF introduced my to GFW Radio, which led me to buy my first ever gaming PC at the age of 28 - which was coincidentally ordered the day before Jeff Green left and arrived the day after Shawn left!

  • GAF introduced me to Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, an astounding flawed gem which I adored and would never have heard of without this forum.

  • GAF introduced me to Idle Thumbs which (as a former academic and old man) lets me listen in on the kind of wizardly discourse that all my real life friends are to grown up for.

  • GAF helped me quit smoking after ten years because there's a thread on e-cigs in the off topic!

Also, "Blamespace or Timedog" was pretty funny yo.

So yeah, NeoGAF sure has its moments.

I need to go ly dow,

So we did all this for you but you never bothered to post? You ungrateful bastard!!!!

With Adam I just can't help but think about all the stupid things I've said or jokes I've made with people around that when taken out of context ("harmless jokes a student makes when with friends/joking around with people/stuff obviously not meant seriously") could've been blown completely out of proportion I can't help but feel sorry for him (even though e.g. the context or our position is completely different). Like what if someone took my jokes/comments and put them in a completely different context? I honestly don't want to imagine that, shit like that can ruin your entire career/life.

As for you losing your modship, I hadn't been around for long so I didn't have an opinion. Back then I thought it was appropriate, but I wouldn't exactly call it a qualified opinion.

Theres a difference. You can say stupid shit in private, but, on twitter when thousands if not millions are viewing? Yeah, you've just created a PR nightmare. I work retail, if I ever did something like this I would be fired in a heartbeat.

That's a nice post. And yeah, that's what the forum is to someone on the outside looking in. For us, we all have our personal touchstones.

EviLore, you need a re-tag: Holding out for eight figures.

Seriously though - bravo & kudos for not selling out. I'd have bitten their hands off and chewed on their forearms

The can blame 'GAF' all they want as if we were a single entity, but the fact is, that if none (or even less) of the media had reported it, it wouldn't have meant anything. It would have petered out and we'd have moved on. They contributed to the story growing and giving it general attention to a wider audience.

Also, CliffyB can suck a fat one. I have never disagreed with a person so much. Take responsibility for your actions, especially when your employer is on your fucking Twitter profile. If you can handle the responsibility of being employed by a big company, and all that goes with it, you shouldn't be there. None of this 'I'm a baby on the internet for the first time, I make le mistakes'.

Even Kamiya got chewed out after gaijin-gate by Inaba.

For every idiot like him, there's a hundred smarter people who kept their mouths shut, and damn look at that they still have their jobs.

What not talking sh*t on twitter will do for people.

Welp, time for my dividends.

Also I just want to say "perpetual overcast nature of the Pacific Northwest" is apparently subjective since I have lived here my whole life and do not recall never having seen the sun.

Just to briefly touch upon the whole "GAF single entity" thing....all one would have to do is simply skim the pages of the Orth thread to see just how polarizing the issue has been between the GAF community.

I can't be the only one to notice one of EL's ears sticks out more than the other? Also lol people not knowing his name. He's said it a lot here.

Dude's snapped. He's totally trying to build street cred with his developer buddies by taking shots at gaf whenever possible. I truly believe he did everything in his power to get banned with that previous thread, just so he could boast about it to them. Glad Evilore didn't do it.

So I left the thread for a while, are adults still blaming the "internet" and not expecting other adults to have to suffer consequences for their actions?

Edge is really missing the point of reporting on things of it thinks its GAF's fault for Orth getting fired.
Orth made public statements, its his own fault he got the can. Like if you go to court and the newspaper reports on you stabbing someone, it's your fault for doing it, not the paper's fault for reporting it.

I don't know why NeoGaf is without a podcast after all this time. I know it's come up in different forms over the years, but god damn. It could be great. There would probably be a lot of pressure on the people creating it, expectations and whatnot. I can dream.

C'mon EviLore, we know everyone has been fiending for new GAFcast now. You can even host from whatever faraway land you are residing in in that given week and there would be a segment on your illustrious travels each time.
