EDGE: "Meet NeoGAF, the hardcore community shaping the games media agenda"

No red eye filter on that pic of evilore? Terrible.

I made last minute accommodations in taking an iPhone shot on the spot so that they could get the article out, since the photos I originally provided were rejected. Author admits it was rushed out the door with the photo copy pasted in, but refuses to update the article (crop out self shot hand? red eye removal? color correction? change the wildly inappropriate high resolution? use a different photo?) because "people would notice." Go figure.

Mrs. B should get into game development. She comes off sounding vastly more intelligent in her completely reasonable question to her husband.

Ignoring the fact that he only really acknowledges the minority (and that's really all it is) of people who are reveling in Orth's sacking, Clifford fails to make even one point regarding how always online benefits the user.

I see that kids are growing up with everything else being always connected; my iOS ecosystem is always connected; a non-coherent example of meters being attached to houses.....but that's it.

How or why would anyone who isn't directly profiting from my home videogame console being connected to the internet think this is a good thing?

The Microsoft being pioneers with Xbox Live requiring broadband is a piss poor example. They're not in the same fucking ballpark of what has been rumored and what Orth was clearly referring to with his tweets. It ain't the same league. It ain't even the same fucking sport. Just terrible.

The shit makes no sense. And the number of industry people--from both sides--responding to this blog with support is mind numbing.

I don't know why NeoGaf is without a podcast after all this time. I know it's come up in different forms over the years, but god damn. It could be great. There would probably be a lot of pressure on the people creating it, expectations and whatnot. I can dream.
The Cruncheons will show you exactly why NeoGaf is without a podcast

You know what, Evilore deserves props for not selling out and allowing this community to be as it is. That is rare, very rare not matter how you slice it.

I should start a podcast. That way people can disseminate my vapid hyper-ego bluster to the far reaches of the internet with minimal personal effort. It'll be even better than having an unemployed blog!

I imagine it would be the first podcast I actually listened to for more than 2 minutes.

I tried IGN's podcast and I could not stand them

My longest read and most trusted gaming publication writing this about my longest read and most trusted gaming forum.

Its like my parents are divorcing :(

Also: is Cliffy B stupid or deceitful for not understanding that my iphone can still play games forever with no signal? In fact widen that to the entire gaming industry. I genuinely can't understand why so many statements conflating connection required to play and having Internet features are being made. The only logical conclusion is they all think we're idiots, and all it does is make me trust them less.

When will someone from the industry address the anti-consumer issues with always on DRM without muddying the waters with crap about online features? At this point I'd actually appreciate MS just coming out and saying "we lose too much money to piracy so were doing this." Rather than this ridiculous attempt to spin as the inevitable march of progress. Video and Music have both tried heavy DRM and found it useless and costly. This is the only industry left pushing it so hard.

Can someone make this into an Avatar, k thnx

Previous ‘tangible results’ of NeoGAF’s hivemind in action are legion, but Malka describes the 2007 incident involving Jeff Bell as NeoGAF’s watershed moment. Bell sent a private message to NeoGAF user a Master Ninja, responding to his criticisms with the legend: “And your contribution to society is…what?”
You're welcome, EviLore.

Welcome to NeoGAF.

WE HATE GAMES.

All I hope is that GAF shapes games media integrity/standards, for it needs it quite badly.
Oh wow. No, please. I don't want every game to question my morality on shooting pixels. I liked Spec Ops but I like being a psychotic maniac with a gun sometimes. C'mon.

Screw that, take the money and run YOLO......j/k

I'm new to GAF and I have to say I'm loving the community here and I'm honoured to be a part of it. I look forward to future E3 meltdowns, Idiots tweeting nonsense and losing their jobs, Bad 8GB GDDR5 jokes, Wii U puns and many more.

The future is bright.

Don't ban me, but EviLore reminds me of the villain of the Disney Channel movie "Luck of the Irish". He was an evil leprechaun who stole the protagonist's grandfather's gold (the kid was half-leprechaun).

Let's use the power of teh GAF to get the author fired.

Turning down seven figures for NeoGAF takes some serious integrity. Can't imagine this forum as being owned by a major corporation.

holy shit, is that Detective Lassiter from Psych?

Everything will have more comments on Reddit than GAF.

Quantity over quality, there. It's also one of the largest general interest communities on the internet. Content by volume.

True, but I just mean that how can a small site like GAF shape the games media more than other, much bigger sites.

The "news" sites are just pissy GAF was the one to bring the Tweets to light first, there is absolutely no fucking way nobody would have reported on them eventually.

That's seriously rude. They had time to to look over and reject multiple photos, but no time to make basic changes right before / after publishing?

Actually the way the photo is now is kinda endearing.

Guess they want you to put on your PR face

I was reading the Cliffy blog post and I couldn't help but wonder about parts of what he said. With the growing popularity of this site, and the occasional role it plays in some industry events or controversies, that this "collective ego" he spoke of does not only exist but is at risk of being exploited and abused?

For example, I get the feeling that some posters are so conscious of this, that by being active members with thread posting privileges they believe they have a power they can wage in their personal vendettas. Sometimes a thread title and/or OP can be so misleading, skewed, provoking, or taken out of context that I can't help but feel that it's a deliberate attempt to aim crosshairs at certain issues in hopes to stir the community and unleash their ire.

Recent examples include the previous title of this thread, and the thread dedicated to CliffyB's post. I hope I'm not seeing things where they don't exist, but it's been a growing concern of mine.

And let's not forget that even though claims of "collectives" and "hive-minds" are highly questionable, even downright offensive especially to anyone who puts so much effort in articulating personal opinions and emphasizing individuality, the forum is (unfortunately) being advertised as such to outsiders -- especially in the wake of similar incidents such as the recent one. Such an image can be extremely attractive to die-hard enthusiasts who just started hearing about the forum and where it lies on the map. As opposed to what many believe (members and non-members), the community is not static; there's as constant influx/outflux of members with all kinds of opinions, expectations and even agendas.

I don't know. I've got lots of unorganized thoughts and mixed feelings, I guess. But let's just say that I hope everyone continue trying to be a little more responsible.

And all I ever do here is talk about dead game systems and the plausibility of using giant dildos as a weapon.... I need to step it up if people are actually reading this stuff.

which part? because most of what he said is straw man bullcrap.
Well I mean, you've obviously read the piece and disagreed with him. I read it and agreed with him. I could explain which parts until I'm blue in the face -- that's not a pun on my avatar -- but we already know you aren't going to accept it. So why bother?

EDGE's characterization is horrible generalization. And wrong.
Sure, this place can come across like that at casual glance, it does seem like that even for me at times, but one CANNOT and SHOULD NOT judge everything by casual glance. There is no GAF-hivemind.
I think this is a broader issue with game journalism as a whole, very shallow understanding, especially of players and communities. And game industry as well, maybe? Not sure, i just think things are like this.
