CNN: The Android that could crush the iPhone

I'm embarrassed to ask this but since I've been stuck with an iPhone for the past few years im wondering how you manage files with an Android phone?
Can you just dump media onto like like a regular external device?

you can if you want to, and if you really want to use some sort of management app, there's an app for that.

So that leaves... Android, iOS, and WP8.

Damn, how good are we at this?

Which I'm assuming the new iPhone will at least come close to meeting those improvements. I just don't see any "wow" feature that is going to drag people away from the Apple brand or the superior App Store.

The "superior App Store" isn't as superior as it once was. The Google Play Store, for phones anyway, is nearly as good as the App Store. The only place it falls behind is games. As an operating system, I think Android has surpassed ios already.

In terms of unique features, I think this is pretty useful - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R08se6Xc9j0

The improved low light camera performance is a pretty big deal, too, in my opinion.

iPhone 5 -

HTC One -

iOS is extremely stale. This coming from an iPhone 5 owner.

This. When I realized I could change every facet of the interface, home screens, widgets I realized I could never switch. That and Swiftkey alone make the platform for me.

Now the usability and stability of each individual phone is a completely separate matter.

The One by almost all accounts is the best Android phone ever made. The problem HTC will have, and has always had, is that most people in America don't know or care about their brand. Really wish they could get a Samsung-caliber marketing push behind this thing, and get it on Verizon.

Where did I last see that headline? Oh yeah, last week. And the one before. And the one before that, all the way back to 2007. We're still doing the iPod/iPhone/iPad "killer" thing?

What an assinine headline, even from CNN. Why is it always the iPhone that needs to be crushed? I don't think Apple has much to worry about from HTC. HTC should focus on eating into Samsung's marketshare, as they're pretty much currently monopolizing the entire Android phone market and eating everyone's lunch. It seems like a much easier customer base to go after than iPhone users. If HTC can't get decent sales out of that phone that would be sad, because it is by all accounts a better phone than anything Samsung has ever done, and anything they have on the market. Samsung has pretty much stifled the entire Android OEM market with its marketing budget alone.

rumor is it's headed to Verizon, just not right away. probably after the GS4.

Apps are always designed for IOS first and android second. Google App Store still pales in comparison. I've gone from iPhone to android back to iPhone. Seriously doubt ill ever go back to android again, no matter how many cool features the phone has. Smartphones ultimately come down to apps, at least in my opinion.

I know the Play Store isn't as good as iTunes, but the customisation you can do on Android phones make them totally better than iPhones.

I'd rather stick with iPhone. I don't want crap carrier branding and their bloatware. Plus I like the apple ecosystem. I doubt any android phone would sway me.

No, the customization makes them totally more customizable than iPhones, not "totally better". There's a massive amount of people who couldn't care less about that- including myself. Customization comes with drawbacks and compromises, so its a matter of preference. For me, a phone is basically an app launcher, the OS is almost irrelevant as they're all functionally very similar. And in terms of appstore, and app quality, there is still no competition between the appstore and everything else.

But the improved low-light shots comes at a price...

The One packs a 4 megapixel camera, bucking the trend of cramming in increasingly more powerful cameras. (Samsung's S4 will feature a 13 megapixel camera by comparison). Instead, HTC says its camera is an "Ultrapixel" device, promising that the sensor pixels are twice as big as they are in most phone cameras. That means they gather more light, making for better low-light shots. In practice, resulting photos are a mixed bag.

Probably good for the Facebook crowd, my eyes start to burn from all the noisy nightclub shots on there. But personally I am well impressed by the quality of day time shots on my iPhone.

No kidding. To me rooting my Android phone and flashing ROMs and installing different launchers is roughly as enjoyable as shoving needles in my peehole.

Yeah, it's definitely a trade off.

Personally, I'd rather my phone camera be a 'jack of all trades' capable of taking at least decent-to-above average photos in all situations, rather than a phone camera that takes great shots in the day but poor shots at night, which is why the HTC One interests me.

Hopefully HTC will be able to improve the technology and refine it for their next high end phone.

Oh come on, we're a multi-OS household here and even without rooting and flashing pretty much every Android kills the iPhone for customisability. If you don't value it that's another story but let's not be silly.

What carriers is this phone available on?

T-Mobile (Sold out already last I checked) AT&T and Sprint thusfar, Verizon is coming later.

Man, just the ability to change your keyboard alone is worth more than gold.

I had an Evo 3d. It turned me off of android. I am now an iPhone user and I enjoy the smartphone experience 1000x more. This phone looks nice and maybe if it came out before I had my evo, I would be singing a different tune.

I'm kind of tempted to get one. Got burned so bad with the EVO though, I'm wary of jumping in with HTC again.

I love my iPhone, but Apple needs to get their shit together on iOS 7. They need something a bit... new. (NOT widgets. But something more integrated with your life, at least.)

That's a great looking phone.

But even the Android guys bicker about HTC. It can't 'kill' anything until it kills The Next Samsung Thing.

This. Lets face it, as awesome a package the iPhone is, even with it's superior App store, there will be apps like Swiftkey that will probably never make it onto the store. It has nothing to do with whether the iOS platform is capable or not, its just Apple and their refusal to allow certain apps on there. I can have the best collection of apps on the iOS, but its pretty useless when they can't talk to each other. It gets frustrating having to use the clipboard to move data from one app to another.

It wont crush the iPhone unless it has a better marketing team than Apple.

From what I have read, HTC have doubled their marketing budget for this phone. Apparently, Qualcomm are also helping out with advertising too. This, unlike the One X might actually sell well.

htc has put out bad quality phones for a long time. I'm worried about this one . Its nice to hold and play with but I bet 8 months from now there will be a lot of bad phones

When did I say otherwise? I just don't care, it's not something that interests me.

Fair enough, it just seemed odd and a little disingenuous to respond to a post about customisation by bringing up rooting and flashing. Obviously I misunderstood your intent.

Anyway to be quite honest the biggest innovation I'd love to see from any smartphone is a battery that's worth a damn.

If I ever created an Android I would sure as hell give it enough strength to crush a mere phone. Oh wait, I merely read the thread title. Forgive me.

I saw one in person today and the screen alone made me feel really shitty about being an iphone owner. That screen is easily the best screen on any mobile device ever. The phone itself is also the best looking phone by a long shot. The build quality is amazing.

I want one badly, but I'm stuck in contract.

My AT&T account says I'm eligible for a "partial discount", does anyone know what that means for pricing on a phone like this?
