EDGE: "Meet NeoGAF, the hardcore community shaping the games media agenda"

"Malka describes NeoGAF as his life’s work. He joined the community when he was fourteen, took it over when he was 19 and has been running it as a full-time job since 2006. He is now 28, and tells us that he has turned down seven-figure offers from large corporations and gaming networks to buy his site."

Dayuummm

I wonder how would it turn out if a corporation takes over NeoGAF. If it turned out bad, props to Malka for turning it down

Wow. Truly a man of integrity and principle. Respect to the exponential degree. I've been with the site longer than I can remember, when it was just known as gaming-age forums, the opa times, etc. Due to career/life issues, I'm no longer hardcore about gaming, but I am still happy to call neogaf my home. Even though I'm not a post count monster, it's a part of my daily routine to check neogaf, and has been that way well over a decade.

Took like 4-5 years for me. Had to delete the account I originally registered with so I could retry with my only non free email account. Once I did that it only took a year or so...

Didn't seem that hard back in 04. Before the reboot, I also got an account fairly easily circa 2000. I'm not sure I could meet the rigorous requirements for membership in this day and age.

It's a great time to be a gamer, unless you're Derrick.

A lot of his criticisms are actually level headed. And I'm sure he would rather have solidly built games than have to constantly critique the next AAA pablum fest. But honestly, on some internal level, Derrick probably enjoys the opportunity to be negative about faults in game design.

This is the thread I had in mind, it was locked before long*

And I don't really follow Cliffy's activity on GAF, so there might be a discrepancy between his attitude here and what was conveyed in the blog post. I didn't agree everything he said mind you, but the bits I brought up resonated with me. And to those who replied to my post, I don't find anything you guys stated necessarily disagreeable, however I was talking in a broader sense about a general concern, and used the recent debacles as examples.

* Which brings up another point: I'm glad that there is seemingly a more active role being taken in regulating such thread with similar potential, as there should.

The poster of the article was making a factual post about what Cliffy posted. Just like Wario's. Your failing to provide even a single example of a neogaf poster making a popular vindictive thread. It might be time for you to reexamine your accusations, as maybe your filtering normal conversations and analysis through a persecution complex; like a lot of the dismissive 'game journalists' and developers, like Cliffy, seem to do.

-----------

The thread was shut down by Bishop because the topic wasn't as original and he thought it should be discussed in the Orth thread. Not because it was vindictive.

But looking at the comments, it runs from the Cliffy fanboy youtube comments; to some early critiques of his 'reasoning'. If it wasn't so early aborted, I or someone else would have made a more in depth critique about the childish nature of the article. I'm not going to get into a detailed description because it will become thread derailing. But in short, Cliffy's 'argument' is fraught with basic logically fallacies. Even more so than his previous post on micro transactions. The post is a joke and if he was a high school student and he turned his most recent blog post in to any class other than creative writing, he would be failed.

Took me less than a week......I feel fortunate..

Somehow it took me just 3 days. That said, a while before that I had applied, waited almost a year, and was told the applicants were wiped.

Every time you load the site you see new registrations at the bottom. I can't imagine what a large task it must be vetting everyone. Moreover, how many do you NEED to vet? Is Neogaf lacking in posts and replies? So how do you determine the right number of new people to let in -- Not sure. Unenviable task.

Cool! Nice to have been a (tiny, insignificant) part of all this over the years. I don't often tread too near the political melting pots of discussion, but I do continue to enjoy GAF as my number one gaming resource.

Some really great communities and a lot of humour also keep me coming back. Congrats EviLore, I tip my hat to you and your anal hivemind.

on one hand yes neogaf.com/forum is influential in the gaming community but what kind of effect has NFL-age had on the NFL? we already know there have been NFL players registered here at neogaf (chris kluwe and probably countless others). perhaps neogaf is shaping professional sports as well

I gave two example of badly worded thread titles, which almost stirred the pot before they got taken care of, but that doesn't seem enough.

Also note that these concerning practices I'm bringing up are the ones that attract a lot of attention, and get often dubbed as "witch hunts." Some were misleading enough to warrant backlashes from members and moderators alike, resulting in bans and loss of thread posting privileges. If you can't think of examples of what I'm referring to you probably haven't been here long enough.

I'd invest in this exchange more had it not been obvious that we're coming from two completely different places. It seems you're reading my posts with a more aggressive tone considering how they look extremely accusatory and suffer from a persecution complex to you. Which doesn't make sense since I'm neither personally affected by this issue, nor have I felt persecuted by it... but I digress.

By the end, I simply wished people would be more responsible with their reporting. An obvious and agreeable advice, tbh.

Maaaaan, fuck that, Evilore, I would have taken that money

Incredible. When I once asked him if he would go public, he just casually but convincingly said no. I didn't know the offer would imply such figures.

Lmao, this thread just keeps is getting better and better.

Is there any follow up on that Documentary with Pachter yet?

Now that I wanna see.

I like this part:
“NeoGAF’s membership includes thousands of press and industry accounts, but among those with a negative attitude toward the enthusiast press, it comes down to the sentiment that it is primarily a credulous PR arm of the video game publishers,” says Malka. “Access to preview coverage, interviews, and early review copies is tremendously important to most of the games press, and publishers dictate that access. If a website is pushing an exclusive review of the next hyped triple-A game, it’s likely that those involved managed to pander to the game’s publisher harder than everyone else did, and that is usually reflected in the tone of the review.”

However much one might disagree with this – and we do in the strongest possible terms – there’s no dispute over the fact that these views are out there, and they are dominant on NeoGAF.
Where they disagree "in the strongest possible terms", but then don't offer any elaboration as to how that's not the case whatsoever.

That article is more like a quick blog entry. Does anything pass as an 'article' in major gaming sites these days?
Damn, we need journalism introduced to this industry...

Makes me proud to be a long time lurker and very little poster for years. This is always my top visited site for many reasons and the respect I give Evilore for keeping the site the way it generally has been is beyond words.

I don't think I could ever turn down seven figures. However this site would not be the same at all had he done so.

What Evilore should do to recoup is to sell XML files with all posts done by member. I'd buy such a file with my post history through the years at a high price :)

I think we should start a kickstarter to raise money and buy EDGE. Then we close it immediatly after buying it. If anyone asks why, we just say: "Well I am Neogaf.com, we get people fired, thats just what we do..."

:lol

Again, this article is no fun. It's fine that they clearly have a problem with GAF, but the article but without going more into how EDGE or the broader games media interacts with and perceives GAF it comes across as passive aggressive. And...that's no good for reporting.

Laziness of the "defining moment" and the portrayals of the gaming industry member experiences notwithstanding.

Who is NeoGAF? I've always wanted to meet him...

We should have news outlets pay for the content! It's like we're their sweatshop.

I really like NeoGAF. It's such a staple of my daily experience. It's just so comforting, it's always a tap away. Glad to see it doesn't seem to be going away any time soon.
