It still boggles my mind that Marvel, a game with ENDLESS possibilities for DLC (new characters, gameplay modes, balance patches, costumes, stages, music, heroes and heralds cards) is totally dropped after a (failed?) Ultimate update 9 months after the game launches.

In total, we got 2 DLC characters and one alternate costume as DLC for each character. Fucking Asura's Wrath got more support than that. The game has such a large fanbase, surely they realize they're missing out by not supporting the game more? Put out new DLC every time a new Marvel movie comes out. Cha-ching.

I guess it all goes back to the sales.

Licensed games are bad business for a game developer unless (1) they don't cost anything (tie-in shovelware) or (2) they get mega sales (Madden/Sports). If you ever get a chance to look at a breakdown of gross v. net profit on retail video games, it's really enlightening. Margins are already low on retail games - adding in a license fee takes that margin even lower. Licensed DLC has a similarly lower margin. Capcom only has itself to blame for its strategy on Marvel, but all indications are that a toxic mix of low sales and low margins spelled the end of anything further.

Edit: I wouldn't call Asura's Wrath "support." I love that game to death, but all signs point to a Capcom that wanted to publish it, knew that it wouldn't sell well, and embarked on a profit-maximization strategy where the complete game cost what, $80? I miss the days when game prices varied quite a bit based on multiple factors ("WTF, this is $75 oh, it's EIGHT MEGA MEMORY!"). Now they still do, it's just that the expensive games are disguised with DLC strategies and the additional costs don't always make sense.
It must be working because you're encouraging the hell out of FGC memes in here.
I don't encourage shit but I enjoy a good usage of a meme here and there.

UMvC3 would of sold better if it came out around the same time as The Avengers.
SFxT could have used an extra six months in the oven. That slot belonged to UMvC3.

oh well
It depends on how good of a job they do.

I think that, to really pull new players in, you have to add a few characters. It makes the game feel like it has fresh possibilities to outsiders. A balance patch will please some, but not many, since people have to care enough to pay attention to the game's balance for a patch to matter at all.
Don't know how well that will work if they try to treat it like a commercial again. We already saw how people reacted to that. Dudes gave me a pack of Sabrett sausages lol. They could really ease up and give us some MvC2 flavor even if it ain't ladylike.

Maximilian saying in the Injustice thread that the netcode sucks.

Hard to know for sure what's what until everyone has the game, but yeah, not a good sign.

I don't understand why companies build out their own netcode instead of just licensing GGPO. Surely the license fee can't be higher than the cost of developing their own?

Talking about how to balance UMvC3 is fun as long as you realize it'll never happen.

Sorry to hear that Max says the Injustice net code sucks but that's pretty much what I was expecting considering MK9's net code sucked and NRS has never mentioned improved net code as one of Injustice's improvements over MK. I figured that if they'd made the net code better, they'd at least have brought it up a couple times by now.

Mike has explained this a thousand times on the Salty Cupcakes stream. Everyone thinks they can do it better. He is not happy about this. He knows the Cannon bros hit the jackpot a long time ago.

Also, sometimes people just don't want to trust something they didn't make themselves.

Yeah, but using good middleware is so standard now for so many other parts of development. I'd love to see a cost breakdown of how much companies spend in house on netcode. Hell, maybe some of these companies are spending no money on it. But we'll never know.

I wish people will realize this. I finally had to :(

Isn't it harder to get GGPO working on games that are not old or small indie things?

Namco doesn't really need to worry too much about GGPO right now anyway. Their games work surprisingly well online. Netherrealm and all of Japan (besides Capcom) need to get on that GGPO fast, though.

Capcom needs to go a bit farther too tbh. They need to take a cue from LZG and let us change our delay before a match. It shouldn't be just in options.

3SO had GGPO and that didn't change its netcode from being terrible. There's a lot more to having good netcode than GGPO.

Is Art allowed to stream it? What happened to the nobody is allowed to stream it yet?

Texas Showdown is going on but I think it's just "anime games" today. No AE, Marvel or GAF's favorite Tekken.

What middleware is the above statement not true about?

This was Harada's answer:

He basically said Namco can do better in a PR sort of way. I can't hate on him for it though, TTT2 and SCV's netcode is pretty damn good.

Thanks, and yeah - if you build your own and it's good, you have nothing to answer for. My question was more directed at the build your own solutions that aren't good.

3SO's netcode isn't bad, it's the match making. GGPO is awful in bad connections, I'd honestly rather just have slowdown.
GGPO allows you to play on a bigger spectrum of ping levels with almost no input lag. 3SO rollback implementation is terrible compared to DSR/MVCO. GGPO when implemented perfectly doesn't have the kind of lag you see on 3so. You rather have slowdown? I guess you love SFIV's shoddy netcode that can barely handle pings higher than 50.

Matchmaking is indeed bad, because whatever they use takes ranking status, and there's not enough people playing for proper matchmaking.

They lost a sale from me. I was really close to buying it. I will wait and see if theres any improvements from the day 1 patch, but it's looking like a no go at this point.
