Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant suffered what the team called a probable torn Achilles tendon during Friday night's 118-116 win over the Golden State Warriors.

He will undergo an MRI in the morning to confirm the injury, according to the Lakers.

Bryant checked out of the Lakers' game against the Warriors with 3:06 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Bryant had 34 points on 9-for-21 shooting, playing every minute of the game up to that point.

Deserves its own thread.

Out for one year with this injury

Also to note: LOL @ the NBA/Stern giving the lakers 50 fucking FTs to insure they win the game and make the playoffs, warriors got 16.

I shot people I like more for less.
Nobody could have foreseen something like this happening with all those extended minutes he was playing.

RIP in Peace Kobe Bryant. In other news, Lakers have a better chance of making it out of the first round without him now

As soon as I saw him fall I turned to my dad and said "torn Achilles, season over." Just like in football, the non contact injuries are always the worst.

It will be interesting to see if the team can rally and win their next two games. This instantly becomes Pau's team and he is going to have to carry them. I also wonder if this forces Nash back into action.

Damn, that's rough - bad timing in his career. I was really looking forward to seeing them try to make some noise in the playoffs.

Really was the worst season I can remember.

buss dying, pringles getting hired over phil, lakers fighting for 8th place with a all-star lineup, and now kobe pretty much ending his career to carry bums into the playoffs.

crying time.

For the uninformed, how serious is this injury? Is it just hyperbole or does this spell the end of his career because he won't recover fully from it?

watching the replay...and if I have it right he hurt himself on multiple plays, and kept playing until finally tearing the heal. Should have sat after the first time he went up and came down awkwardly.

His age is the problem with the injury. A 25 year old can come back in a year or less. A basketball player, over 33 who uses his torque so much, he will probably never be the same, and if he ever is, the lakers are hella old.

Reading some of the ESPN guys' twitter comments, it seems Kobe plans to return.

Remember yesterday's numbers? Kobe's played equivalent of three extra SEASONS w/playoffs & Team USA. Can't just pin it on last five games

‏@ESPNSteinLine
Here's @kobebryant on media fears this shuts him down for good: "I can hear it already. It's pissing me off right now thinkin about it."

‏@ESPNSteinLine
"It's fueling me. It's fueling me already. I can feel it." Doesn't sound to me like @kobebryant sees this as a career-ending injury

‏@ESPNSteinLine
Dominique Wilkins tore Achilles at 31 and made it all the way back. I'm with @MarkHeisler: Even with Kobe at 34, we haven't seen last of him

Kobe Bryant can do a lot of things, but playing on torn Achilles ain't one of 'em. If that's the diagnosis, industry standard is a year out

"Dwight, here's the keys."

Moving past this year, if he r-signs, sure. For whatever remains of this season (possibly only 2 games), this is Pau's car to drive and no one else's.

Kobe will be back. I don't see this as career ending, If for no other reason than Kobe wanting to prove to everyone that he can come back.

Sucks to see as a basketball fan, love him or hate him, the games are better because of him.

If he was crying, I guarantee you it was this line of thought:

"I'm out a year minimum, and maybe for the rest of my life - to get THIS fucking team an 8th seed. And I don't even get to play. I fell on my sword for a first-round exit. Fuck me."

He'll be back next year..remember when people were saying Mariano Rivera was done after tearing his ACL last season? Yeah I do too.
