I'm interested in picking up a controller for my laptop - I'm leaning towards the PS3 controller so that I can use Bluetooth and avoid unsightly dongles, but I already have a spare 360 controller I could use.

Which do you prefer, and why?

360 controller has the best compatibility. In a lot of Steam games, you can just plug it in and have at it.

360 is easier. But if you have a minimum of computer knowledge, go with you controller of choice. I use both ps3 and 360, depending on type of game.

Because while 360 controller is better for shooters, i just use my mouse+keyboard for those. But if i am playing Super Meat Boy i want to use the d pad, and the 360 dpad is...well...a piece of work.

Just prefer PS3 controller for specific genres and it works fine, mouse+keyboard does the rest.

don't laugh, but xbox360 controller is the best, I would prefer it being a lil smaller, other than that it is most comfortable. I use it on PC, even for emulated PS games.

PS3 controller for sure, although I just use a USB cord. I like playing a lot of old console games, and it's perfect for SNES, PS1, PS2, and GCN. A good dpad is required for a lot of indie games, too. 360 controller should be fine for other types of games, though.

Yeah I use the same thing. I recommend motioninjoy's offline version for those who have had trouble before with ads or popups when emulating a 360 pad. It may still be problematic/evil, but I'm just too used to the PS3 controller to switch up and it gets the job done.

lol. Ironically I use it for almost anything but mp shooters. platformers, action games etc.

I prefer keyboard and mouse control. For me gamepad is only for 2D games, sports and racing games.

I use an xbox360 controller for the pc. Works pretty good, I had it even before owning a 360.

Wired 360 pad. I haven't had any issues with compatibility apart from a few old games. The only downside is the electrical tape I have around the handles to stop it falling into pieces.

I use the 360 Gamepad for Windows, wired version. I have the wireless dongle too but found myself preferring wired for PC use.

As a gamepad, I prefer the Dualshock 3 but since most games are designed to work with the 360 one it just feels more right to use it

PS3 since I emulate and the dpad is much better. Been thinking about buying a 360 pad though, since it still trips me up sometimes when the game tells me to press 360 pad buttons and it's better for playing current AAA type games. It also doesn't require that Motioninjoy nonsense. But DS3 is more than competent for now.

360 for all/most of my Steam games and some specific games on Dolphin.

For anything related to emulators I use the OG controllers via many kinds of USB adapters like the Retrode for my SNES/Gen games and separate adapters for the N64/Saturn/PSX controllers.

Hands down the 360 controller. I think that it's the most ergonomic (and good looking) controller and it works on both my PC and 360.

No. Most games that are PC centric or are first person will be played with mouse + keyboard. I wouldn't like to play Dark Souls with m+k though.

360 pad for most things as it offers the best compatibility and a Logitech PS3 Chillstream I got really cheap for 2D games although the D-Pad on that is acting a bit iffy lately. I wish I had a controller with a good d-pad and Xinput support though.

I already have 2 of them so no point in wasting money on another one, plus everything works great. With motion joy you can even make it work as a 360 controller (same compatibility) and it's extremly customizable. You can even assign the motion sensors to whatever axis you want and emulate the WiiMote on dolphin (minus the pointing obviously)

F510 is the best of both worlds. Has rumble (unlike F310) but uses wires so no signal loss (unlike F710) and is recognized as a 360 controller so it's supported by any game that supports that. Plus you gain additional support by switching between Xinput and Dinput.

Since joining GAF, every time this thread comes up, I haven't seen a better option.
