• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

What was your previous PC spec, current PC, and planned future PC?

Previous:
i5 4690k
GTX1080
16GB RAM
240mm AIO
512GB SSD
2x2TB WD Reds
Coolermaster Case
Corsair RM650 (or was it the 750?)

It was around 1400€

Current (since June 2024):
MSI B650m Gaming Plus
Ryzen 7 7700X
TUF RTX4070Ti Super
Kingston Fury Beast 32GB RAM 6000CL30
DeepCool Assassin IV
2x Noctua NF-A12 in Black (I bought 4, 2 were supposed to get under the GPU, but the GPU is to fat, can only fit slim fans)
1x 512GB Crucial P5 Plus for OS
1x 2TB WD Black SN850X for Games
Asus AP201 full Mesh
BeQuiet Pure Power 12M 850w

That one was around 1600-1700€ and I kinda regret not getting a 4080, but I had to get a full setup and my budget was "only" 3500€.

Future:
Same PC, just upgrade CPU and GPU. CPU upgrade will be the last X3D chip to release on AM5. GPU will most likely be the 6080 or 6070Ti depends on price. If the 6070Ti is faster than a 4090 in games than I'll be happy with that.

There would've been a different PC as my previous one if it hadn't been for the mining boom as my GTX1080 kicked the bucket in April or Mai 2020 and my smart ass was like "lets wait for the RTX3080 to come out". I was thankfully able to get a PS5 pre-order in... but 4 years without gaming PC was weird.

First and current build -

7600x
9070xt
32gb ddr5
850w PSU
1tb SSD

Not sure I'd build again honestly, definitely not at these retarded prices.

Got a PS5 too and not sure I'd get another console either.

I upgrade CPU / GPU at different times rather than upgrading everything at once, so I'll just order them individually.

AMD Athlon II X4 640 (2010)
I5-4670k (2014)
Ryzen 3600 (2020)
Ryzen 5700x (current)

Radeon 5750 HD (2010?)
GTX 670 2GB (2013)
RX 470 4GB (2017)
GTX 1660 Ti (2020)
RTX 3060 12GB (2023)
RTX 5060 Ti 16GB (2025)

Don't have any plans to upgrade at the moment.

Previous PC (2015):
Intel i7 , forget speed but it was the fastest one in 2015
GTX 1080
32GB Ram
Some Gigabyte motherboard

Current PC (2023):
Intel i9 14900 (fucking thing burned itself out in less then a year, replaced with a slightly slower i9)
RTX 4090
32GB Ram
Asus Motherboard

I have money, but I might not buy another PC for like a decade with the way things are being priced, just feels like a ripoff for what you are spending.

End of 2017 8700k, 32gigs of dd4 3200mhz, gtx 1080 upgraded mid 2021 to 3080ti
then(and thats current) 9800x3d with 64gigs of ddr5 6200mhz(hoping for it to reach value of midsize villa in a year or two ;p).

Furure- planning to upgrade gpu to something in line of 6070ti/80/90 or amd's rdna5 equivalent depending if i like the specs of those(dont care that much about price if it brings equivalent value, aka 2k usd streetprice 24gigs of ddr7 rtx 6080 with raster performance at/above rtx 4090 and 350W tdp im gonna bite imediately).

Current spec is pretty old: 2700X, 16gb ddr4 3200mhz, 1080ti @ 1080p 120hz.
Not playing anything that cant run on that fine at moment so been waiting until i game comes out im really into to build new pc.

Future pc is 9800x3d or 10800x3d etc 32gb 6000 ddr 5, 5070ti if this year or 6 series if next.

I bought my previous PC in 2012. It was an i7 3770K with 16 GB DDR3 RAM and a GTX680 2 GB VRAM. However, I changed the GPU a few times over the years. I bought a GTX 1080 Ti in 2017 and sold it in 2020 for very good price. I used the standard GTX 1080 until 2024. In 2024, I built a new PC with a 7800X3D CPU, 32 GB DDR5 RAM, and an RTX 4080S GPU. If the next Ryzen X3D CPU is compatible with my current motherboard, I might upgrade my CPU. I am also planning to upgrade my RTX 4080 to an RTX 6080 even though Ada GPUs will probably last a long time. The new generation should offer better performance than my current GPU and have additional DLSS features and the newest display port.

I so rarely upgrade my CPU/Motherboard unless new tech comes out.

So Ill just list GPUs cuz AlderLake is pushing the way SandyBridge pushed.

3070 upgraded to
3080LHR upgraded to
3080'12G upgraded to
4080

Pretty much every second xx70s prior to that till the GTX260c216, then 8800GTS then 6800GS....then alot older things most people wont know or care about.
Still have a few of them lying around.

Probably wont upgrade my CPU till NovaLake.
bLLC and 52 frikken cores.......that sounds too good to be true.....lets see if Intel can pull it off.

I build my own pc 3 years ago before that always console my spec are. Amd ryzen 7, 7800x3d, nvidea 4090, 32gb of ram. I dont know in the future, depens what the prices will be. But I hope this system will go at least 4/5 more years

For a future upgrade? time will tell with the current price up spree in parts.

I have had a million PCs but my current one is a 5800X3D, 32GB of RAM, and a 3080 12GB.

I mainly play strategy games on it these days and they all run fine so I have no real compulsion to upgrade especially with all the silliness. I was thinking of getting a 5080 but I am not spending $1400+ on a 2nd rate (by definition) GPU. I was also looking forward to the Super but that doesn't appear to be happening.

Nothing for a good while. Maybe a better OLED monitor once the new QD OLED models are more widely available/affordable?

Monitors, PSU, storage, case and other peripherals are the same. I moved to AMD due to having to RMA x2 13/14th Gen Intel CPUs due to the microcode issues. I lost all confidence in their products. No regerts. :)

previous PC

amd radeon r7 265

current PC (ship of Theseus)

nvidia rtx 3070 (from gtx 1080)
amd ryzen 5600 (from 2700x)
32gb ddr4 ram (from 16 gb)

no specific rules or patterns. i just sold my 1080 and got 3070 instead adding on top. then did the same from 2700x to 5600. upgraded to 32gb last summer simply because they were super cheap.

before all that i had a lower end PC I was really happy with. but r7 265 just died one day randomly. its memory modules are cooked.

i just wait for ddr6 at this point. i'm skipping am5 and ddr5 altogether. and hopefully not a VRAM limited 70 tier GPU

Nvidia Riva 4MB
96MB RAM

to
Athlon64 3200+
Radeon 9800XT 256MB
2GB RAM

to
i5 4690k
GTX 1060 3GB
16GB DDR4

to
12 gen i7
3070 8GB
16GB DDR5

to
meh laptop and switch

previous:
Ryzen 5 3600
RTX 3060 12 gB
2TB ssd
32 gB ram

Now:
Ryzen 7600X
RTX5070 23 Gb
2TB ssd
32 Gb

I'm happy for now, for the future i have no idea.

I'm using my previous and my current at the same time.
Both are prebuilts bought at Bestbuy with no interest 2 year credit.

Previous
Lenovo Legion
Intel 13700F
RTX 4070
16GB RAM
1TB M.2 SSD

I upgraded it to 32GB of RAM added a 2TB to the spare M.2 slot.
I also upgraded the power supply to a Corsair 1200 watt thinking I would simply get a RTX 5090 someday (Nope).
The Lenovo case is small and fits perfectly in one of the cubbies under my living room TV. But the case and cooling situation was not going to handle much more than the RTX 4070. :(

Current Bought a few weeks ago.
iBuypower hyte40 fishtank case (it's big)
Ryzen 9 9700X (I'm not so sure about this CPU, It works with the games but runs much hotter than the Intel I had previous)
It's cooled by an AIO it stays quiet during gameplay but will get super loud during shader compilations. (I set the fan curve to ramp up when it gets hot)
RTX 5080 A big improvement over the 4070
32GB Ram 6000MT but high latency :(
2TB m.2 SSD No heatsink on the M.2, I'll need to buy one.

I moved the 2TB from my old PC into the new one for a total of 4TB.
I may swap the PSU from my old PC into the new one someday.
I don't yet know how to control the light show inside the fishtank. maybe Open RGB?

New PC performs quite a bit better than the old one (RTX 5080vs 4070).
I like that the GPU sits upright using a riser card (I think it's a PCIe4 riser with a PCIe5 RTX 5080)

Previous (2010/11)

And phenom II 855 black
8gb ddr3 (might have been 4gb)
Not sure about storage, probably 500gb then added 2tb hdd later.
Gigabyte GeForce 960 (bought in 2015?)
Antec 300 case
450w psu

Not sure on cost, gpu cost me £130.

Had a few laptops inbetween

Current (2020)
Ryzen 5 3600 (upgraded to 5600 in 2022/3)
16gb ddr 4 (upgraded to 32gb in 2022/3)
1660 super (upgraded to 3070 in 2021)
2tb sata ssd, 2tb hdd (upgraded to 1tb nvme & 2tb nvme, still have the 2tb sata ssd)
Fractal design define S (later upgraded to 011 air mini)
650w seasonic psu

Paid about £750 for original iteration of this PC, already had the storage.

Future
Keep talking myself out of upgrading my gpu, Definitely won't be upgrading to am5 anytime soon.

So sticking with this for now. I'm thinking I might wait till I can get double performance on a gpu for under £400 with 16gb vram so will have to see.

I upgrade when I feel like it, no real strategy except letting the money I plan to use rest on stocks between upgrades to pay for it.

Current
Desktop PC: 5090, 9950x3D
Couch PC: 4090, 7800x3D

Previous
Desktop: 4090, 7900x
Couch: Docked Steam Deck

Future
Desktop: No plan to upgrade in years to come, unless some new exciting feature pop up from out of nowhere.
Couch: Might update the CPU if it becomes a bottleneck.

Previous i7-4770k/1070
Current : Laptop with i5-12500h/3060 (120w variant i'm pretty sure)

I don't see myself getting anything new for a while. All I use this thing for is the occasional lite indie or Fallout 3/NV replays. 99% of my gaming is done on my Pro at this point. I have contemplated getting a Mac Mini though just to get off windows for day to day use.

I tend to upgrade individual components as necessary rather than everything at once.

Currently running a 7800X3D and 5090 in a build that started late 2018.

Started with a 9900K and 2080 Ti. The GPU was then replaced with a 3080, 3080 Ti and 4090.

A couple of years ago, the 9900K was starting to show its age, so I replaced it with a 7800X3D which also involved a new motherboard, memory and AIO. A major reason I went with this chipset over Intel was so that I wouldn't have to replace everything for the next CPU upgrade.

I'm still using the case (Phanteks Evolv X), PSU (EVGA 1200w P2) and fans (Corsair LL) from the 2018 build. Still love the case and not cheaping out on a PSU definitely paid off. Fans do the job but I could definitely do better these days.

CPU will be the next internal component that's replaced, and I'd probably get new case fans at the same time.

I'd actually really like to convert this to a Small Form Factor build but I haven't done any research on that yet, and it's also nice not having to worry about physical space with each GPU upgrade.

EDIT: Thanks, GAF. Now I'm itching to upgrade this CPU.

Next:
  • Whatever the next top gaming chip is after the 9800 series (11800X3D?)
  • I'd like to look at how I could move to 48GB next time instead of 64GB. It bugs me having a bunch of wasted RAM in my machine that I never use.
  • Open minded on the GPU. If AMD can deliver a meaningful jump over the 9070 XT with at least 24GB of VRAM, then I'll probably do that and pass my current card down to my son. If not, I'll see what the RTX 6080 is like.

My first PC was a HP pre built piece of crap back in 2005 and it could barely run WoW.
I started to slowly upgrade it throughout the years until nothing of the original build was left. I still only upgrade my system piece by piece.

Current build:
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Nvidia RTX 5090
32GB DDR5 RAM
8TB M.2 storage

I don't really have anything to upgrade to. Maybe in a couple of years.
I like to sell my old GPU before it loses most of its value and then put another 500€ on top to get the current top model again.

Current is 4080 which was my first PC. I'll probably rock it for a few years yet and take it from there if I want to upgrade or just go back to consoles.

I flip flopped between consoles and PC over my gaming lifetime, but starting with this gen I think I'll go comfortably stay PC only, or atleast use it mainly. It's been too long since my previous PC so I genuinely can't remember, but my current PC looks like this:

550 Watt be quiet! Pure Power 12 M Modular 80+ Gold
Sharkoon M30 BLACK
Endorfy Fera 5 Dual Fan
ASRock B760M PRO RS/D5 MATX Intel DDR5 S1700
12GB Sapphire Radeon RX 6700 XT Pulse
32GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR5
Intel Core i5 12400F 6x 2.50GHz
1TB Kingston KC3000 M.2

I built it like 2 years ago. I've been very happy with it, I play on 1440p on high settings on my OLED and it's been a dream. I'm generally an easy to please person, so I'm also happy with using FSR and whatnot to boost FPS. If need be I can always go lower to mid settings or 1080p. I'm pretty proud of what it can do to be honest.

Future wise...I think I'd need to almost replace my entire PC, and I'm planning to do that in the far future. I can't just upgrade my GPU and let it be, I'd need to upgrade my PSU to accomodate the new card, I'd need to change my CPU to AMD at the very least but that also means changing my motherboard, that's already half the PC parts :messenger_grinning_smiling:

However I do have to admit, I'm thinking of doing a mini upgrade before the big one. Even though my 6700 is doing a very good job for my needs, I'm kinda bummed about how AMD seemingly dropped support for it this quick and at the same time I'm starting to wonder if I can play games like Witcher 4 or GTA 6 comfortably on it, especially since I'm missing out on FSR 4/DLSS. I'm not really a "I MUST HAVE RAYTRACING" person, but more and more games will implement that in the future, which will make my sweet 6700 cry. I'm thinking of getting a 9060 XT or better yet a 5060 Ti if I can manage to sell my 6700 XT sometime. The rest is still fine I think. I hope I can continue playing comfortably like this.

That was my Previous Previous. I still have it but it's not been turned on in over 2 years. I bet it still works. It's got a couple of sata SSD's inside the case that could still be used.

Previous PC was a 2080

Current PC is a 4090...

... which I'll be riding into the ground until it explodes and then unless prices dramatically come down my next PC will be a hamster in one of those spinny wheels going real fast to power a stick-figure crayon illustrated flip book.
