Bombs detonated at Boston Marathon finish line

The Associated Press is reporting that all cell-phone service has been shut down in the Boston area. Likely done to prevent remote denotation of any additional bombs.

My gf called me around 2:50 this afternoon, crying her eyes out. She and her sister were at the finish line and saw the second explosion, then immediately ran to her sister's house in Back Bay. They've since stepped out a few times to bring food to runners who were still out there.

I was working my second job at a bar on beacon (about 1.5 miles from the finish line) when I got her call. I told my co-workers and a few patrons (met mostly with confusion and incredulity), then it popped up on the news. We turned the music off and everyone froze. The cops did a sweep of every business on beacon, so they made us kick everyone out around 345, and they cleared the streets pushing everyone westbound.

My normal job is at Mass General, I can only imagine what the mood will be like there tomorrow. :(

I've checked in with all my friends who ran, no one was hurt.

Edit: the cell phone thing is true. Use fb and Twitter to keep in contact.

Oh my god, the last mile was dedicated to Newtown, the news is saying some Newtown families were at the finish line.

wtf

I have heard, like others, that "multiple" undetonated devices have been discovered throughout the city. That is freakin' nuts! I wonder how many they have actually found.

The entire library thing is weird. At first it was being investigated, I heard it wasn't related and was an electrical fire. Then an hour or two later I get an AP alert with the police commissioner saying it WAS related and there was an explosion just the same there as well.

This is so awful.

It's all hearsay and misinformation. The only stuff I'm looking for now is actual news from the city's press conference. Until then, it's all unconfirmed.

@wario64 No way...

Reading through Boston.com's live blog... Words fail.

But one tweet from NBC Sports Network saying that there have been reports of Marathon finishers heading to the hospitals to donate blood is awe-inspiring.

JKFK musemu is so far awa.y. I'd be shocked if this is related

I wouldn't. Our bomber could have taken the Red Line from JFK/UMass to Park Avenue and transfered to the Green Line to Copley with little problem. If the bombs had timers on them, he could have planted the JFK bomb first and then the Copley Square ones. First bomb at JFK would have been a distraction while the Marathon ones went off.

Reports of Marathon Runners that crossed finish line and continued to run to Mass General Hospital to give blood to victims.

Amazing!

I know a number of people will denounce the human species because of this (it happens a fair amount of GAF) but we should remember that this is the act of a small number of people and that there are hundreds of people doing everything they can to help friends, loved ones and strangers right now.

Had no idea NY Post has such a crappy reputation. Is this a left vs. right thing or are they consistently wrong?

They are just consistently wrong. Really bad reporting going on over there, not everyone but most. Don't trust them in these situations.

left vs right

No, they just jump on anything without bothering to check info in these situations. Their editorial department needs a good cleaning.

But why would the bomber set a bomb not near the marathon when he obviously intended the bomb to go off during the maratonh? again, lets not jump to conclusions

Awful news, I can't express how sorry I am to hear this.

Prayers and love go out to all of Boston and Boston GAF. Please be safe.

The board is finally back. I've missed it the last hour or so.

It looks like they have a Saudi national at the hospital being guarded as a suspect. Weren't most of the 9/11 hijackers also Saudi nationals?

I just saw the picture of the guy in the wheel chair, the last image here you must click to view. Holy lord...

Oh god. I was not ready.

I was hanging out in that area last year. I biked around that whole finish line area while my girlfriend at the time ran the race. She had dozens of friends there this year, but they are pretty quick and would have finished and hopefully not hung around until this went down. So many good things ruined today.
