Well, if NY and the White House are taking defensive measures, I suppose maybe they know more than what we know? Seems a bit extreme to lock down areas unrelated to this unless there's a connection. Was the White House on a defensive stand during the attempted NYC carbomb a few years ago?

This just has a different vibe to it. So many reports of different things happening in different areas, then reports of these things being unrelated. It just smells of trying to keep calm because there is something more going on here. I think it's likely some orchestrated group attack going on, but I hope I'm wrong.

This is what I have seen so far:

* White smoke indicates (usually) non plastic explosives, increasing the chance it's amateur or opportunistic.
* NO credible threats leading up to this, international or domestic
* Speculation about the timing ranges from, yes it's Tax Day in Boston, to "weird shit just happens in April with too few events (McVeigh, Waco) to be a pattern"

If it wasn't for the fact that we have many sworn international enemies who have stated that US civilians are their target, it would look at first blush, like domestic terrorism.

Is it wrong that I "wish" it was just a couple of faulty gas mains?

Acts to commit terror to civilians are terrorist attacks. Also consider that countries other than the US took a role in this marathon. You can arguably say this was an attack of terrorism on the world, based on how many countries had civilians in the marathon.

From Globe Correspondent Justin A. Rice: Nelson Pereira, 36, of Dorchester was limping out of a VIP tent in Copley square just before 5:30 p.m. when police finally told him he could head home.

Pereira, who was running the Boston Marathon for the first time to raise money for Leukemia, was running through Boston College when he said he heard the explosion. He took the Orange Line to Copley Square to get his bag with his stuff because the Green Line was shut down.

But police told him he couldn’t leave Copley Square and he said he had no cell phone in his bag.

“I know a lot of my family is trying to get a hold of me,” he said as him limped out of the tent.” So they don’t know if I’m alright or not and I heard that two people got killed and 25 people got hurt. We heard the explosion. I ran basically 20 something miles.”

When asked about the fact that he could have been at the finish line during the explosion he said: “That’s crazy, I’m smiling but that’s crazy."

People on city streets go up on roofs all the time during public events (like parades, and yes, marathons) if they have access. It's one of the best (and most relaxing, since there are no crowds) places for viewing events like these outside of a VIP section.

Yup I have watched the Boston Marathon from the roof of an ex gfs apartment building.

If this happened 2 years ago it could me us 2 standing there on top of some building.

Can't imagine the security ramifications that will arise from this tragedy. They're speculating that whoever did this brought in the devices after the bomb-sniffing dogs already passed through the area. There really is no way to ensure 100% security over such a large area with so many people coming and going over the course of several hours.

Yeah, so if that's a person, they're in exactly the same mid stride position as the explosion is going off and then afterwards as people are running away. In other words, it's not a person, it's just something that looks like one.
