Earthbound Coming to Wii U Virtual Console in NA / Europe

EarthBound is my third favorite game of all time.

Anyone who has not played it is doing themselves an incredible disservice. It is a game that changed how I look at video games.

When is Mother 3 coming to the Wii U in NA?

That would be bigger news...

Or better yet to "Save" the Wii U why not make Mother 1-3 collectors box then make Mother 4 for it and throw in bringing out Zelda and Smash Bros sooner but that is another story..

Hell of a nice move Nintendo.

Now hurry up and tie every future potential release, interview and piece of merchendise in the franchise directly to the sales of this VC release.

Absolutely. I dont bullshit on here.

The crappy indie store. Your Ebays and Amazons sell it at those crazy prices because the sellers arent idiots. They know the hardest of the hard desire the game and will pay whatever price for it even though it isnt worth anywhere close to that amount. Finding a copy isn't like picking gnat shit out of pepper.

The most popular internet auction site is an accurate reflection of the free market and people are dictating the price of Earthbound due to the laws of supply and demand. If it wasn't worth 200 dollars then people wouldn't pay 200 dollars for it. The fact that you aren't getting this is astounding.

I don't think you understand the concept of supply and demand

No one is saying that you're bullshitting here. What were saying is the experience that you're describing is an extreme outlier for the typical Earthbound tracking experience. I've seen dozens of mom 'n pop video game stores from when I lived in Minnesota, and I never once saw a copy of Earthbound. The Atlanta area has also been a bit of a bust in that regard.

I saw a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga at one of those stores, selling for less than $200. That is an extreme outlier, just like Earthbound for $75 is.

My favorite part about the trolling in this thread is the "But it really costs $350!" argument. Just ludicrous.

Clearly, this isn't made to be A MAIN REASON to buy the system. It's something that those who own the system can buy. That's it.

People whine and complain about Nintendo "not doing anything for its fans" and then when they finally do something like this those same people whine and complain. Get over it.

I picked up a cartridge only for $45 back in 2005 on eBay, what's the going price for that these days?

I can ONLY IMAGINE what a sealed copy with the strategy guide and everything must cost...

Reading this topic left me a little bummed. I have little interest in the Wii U or Earthbound, but the amount of cynicism towards Nintendo in every Nintendo topic is out of control. Very, very few people are going to buy a Wii U for this game, and this would have been big news regardless of the Wii U's line up. I wish people would be excited for the fans or not post at all, and leave it at that.

Yaay, but also kind of annoying. Were they just ignoring everyone that said they wanted Earthbound for years and years? What changed so that they're releasing it now? Was some kind of problem fixed? Did it just take 6 years for fan complaints to finally reach someone at Nintendo that gives a fuck?

Oh man. When Iwata said, "Now I'd like to talk about Earthbound..."

This is Nintendo's finest hour.

We got Smash bros, Mario Wii U and a New Mario kart at E3, New Zelda and Yoshi island for the 3DS and motherfucking Earthbound coming to America finally after decades!

There is a difference between being a savvy consumer and being a dick. You're being the latter. The price is dictated by what customers are willing to pay for it when it comes down to things like this.

Very excited! I have been wanting to play this for years but the price of the cart on the secondary market has prevented that.

Very happy to be able to play it finally. Glad to hear that the movement on Miiverse actually yielded in positive results.

I hope that support for this title with a purchase by that same group of people may get the powers that be to make a decision to get Mother 3 into our hands at some point in the future.

This is big news. I already have the game, but European fans are going to feel vindicated, and so will all the bruisers at Starmen.net. Awesome that Nintendo's listening!

This must make Iwata super-duper satisfied.

I don't think you understand the concept of supply and demand

I dont think you understand the concept of being ripped off, regardless of supply and demand.

If you wanna pay that amount for it, rock on. I'm just glad it's finally being released here at a fantastic price and yet it's crazy that it could potentially be a system seller.

Fucking finally.

Is this confirmed to only be on Wii U VC? Or is it on the Wii VC? Or what the fuck is the difference?

Christ, finally happening. Hopefully Mother 3 is next. And Mother 1.

Isn't this just a glorified rom dump?

It's not like Mother 3 was announced for a western localization or anything has been added.

I guess this is good news for Europeans that never played it or people that never played it from North America on the SNES. But I'm going to take a wild guess that the people that are freaking out about this have their SNES hooked up with Earthbound or have it loaded on an Emu.

One or two music tracks and an enemy based of Dali's Clock, if I recall correctly.
Yep. The three specific legal issues, which are miniscule in the grand scheme.

Hippy Theme (based somewhat on a Chuck Berry song)
Skyrunner Theme (which is not based on anything but apparently sounds too much like a song by The Who)
The name "Dali's Clock." Which can be changed to "____ Clock" pretty easily.

I wonder if these will be edited at all, or if they were decided as not being true legal issues.

It is, but Earthbound has had a rather contentious history in the west, stemming from its legendarily disappointing sales in the US, especially after the huge marketing campaign it received.

A glorified ROM dump that can be played on the Gamepad and that has a Miiverse community attached.

A ROM dump for a game that, by legitimate means, has an inflated cost and requires a SNES to play.

A ROM dump for a game that people in the EU have never experienced legitimately before.

A ROM dump for a game that has been in-demand by the fan community for over a decade.

Glorified indeed.

Besides, like I already said, perhaps if this VC release does well it'll make a localization for Mother 3 viable, and we all know GBA VC for Wii U is in the works. You can always hope.

so stupid about the chuck berry song, rock n roll is basically based off recycling shit.

Its big news to me because...

I've never played Earthbound. I had a chance to buy the game when it first came out in America a long time ago and... I never bought it. I was thinking about getting it through eBay or Craigslist or something but several of the copies were selling over $150. Just for the cartridge. Could I just download a ROM and be done with it? Sure, but fuck that. I was going to take my chances saving the money for a cartridge or hoping Nintendo would release the title on the eShop.

I'm just really happy for the starmen community and the Earthbound fanbase. Besides your usual Nintendo big fanbases like Mario, Zelda, Metroid and etc, a lot of the time I'd be browsing on the net and look at all these Earthbound sites (especially starmen.net) and see how rapid, loyal, insane and all nice words I can manage in my limited vocabulary... that fanbase is amazing. Just amazing. So to see that fan base rewarded is just so cool.

And the big take away from this is that Nintendo listened on Miiverse. And why I'm happy about that is because once Earthbound releases this year and the Earthbound fan base buys the game again... so will new comers to the series like myself. Just reading the stories I've read over the years about the game, and its localisation and how its never sold all that much and how Earthbound Zero is a thing and Mother 3 was also never released here in the West... I just can't wait to see all these fan bases scream as loudly as possible to see more Earthbound play in the West. I sure hope they scream loud anyway! Make Nintendo listen more and actually give in to the fans and give 'em what they want.

I'm just super ecstatic about the news. More so because of the future consequences this brings.

So yeah it is a rom dump that is glorified.

I love how some here try to paint this as anything but a love letter to hardcore fans.

It's a fan favorite finally getting an official release, which will probably sell way below 20.000 copies. It's a happy day for fans of the game.

The only sad thing about this, are the people that feel the need to shit on others excitement.

Seriously. Anyone who has a physical copy of this game.. It just became worthless. Better dump them on Ebay. Or better yet. PM me. I'll be fair.
